Oxford is swamped with tourists all year round, especially, not surprisingly, in the summer. Many come simply to wander down the High Street and around the cobbled back streets, admiring the architecture of a university town that has been a centre of learning for more than seven hundred years. One can easily spend a day just looking around some of the extremely impressive and beautiful Colleges. Christ Church is probably the most famous of these, but many colleges have either pretty gardens or a beautiful front quad. Not least, of course, is Magdalen College, which boasts its very own deer park.

Museums

Those who come to Oxford to appreciate the cultural side of an ancient academic institution will doubtless venture into one of the City's many museums. The most traditional of these is the internationally famous Ashmolean Museum in Beaumont Street, which houses antiques, art galleries, and an extensive coin collection. The University Museum on Parks Road is a natural history museum, filled with fossils and remnants of prehistoric creatures. Accessible through the back of the University Museum is the Pitt Rivers Museum, which is home to the more weird and wonderful side of science - a must for kids of all ages, as well as those fascinated by gory sights!

Theatre

Given its host of undergraduates, many of whom fancy themselves as budding thespians, Oxford has several playhouses and theatres. While most of these host primarily student productions, the Apollo Theatre focuses on outside talent. As well as many musicals, the theatre also attracts the odd stand up comedian: Steve Coogan and Eddie Izzard have both performed there in the last few years. For more regular, though not quite as famed comedy, Jongleurs on Hythe Bridge Street is the only official comedy club. Most nights have stand up, but as few of the acts are well known, it's more a case of luck of the draw than going to see someone you love. Having said that, once the show's over, the disco lights come on and it's time to get grooving. Really as much of a nightclub as a comedy club, Jongleurs can pull in some top class DJs.

Music

The music scene in Oxford has branched out greatly over the last few years. Having given birth to indie bands Radiohead and Supergrass, there's always been a great Indie/Rock music scene, particularly at the Oxford Brookes Student Union and the Zodiac on the Cowley Road. As for clubbing, Oxford has always been a haven for seventies and eighties music, which is kept alive by the hordes of drunken students, all desperate to try out the groovy moves that only John Travolta can really pull off in style. For those into less mainstream music, the Zodiac regularly plays host to the country's top drum 'n' bass DJs. Other venues regularly playing breakbeat/big beat music are PoNaNa and The Coven, while Club Latino has regular international nights, consisting largely of salsa music.

Cinema

There are four cinemas in Oxford: the ABC Magdalen Street, the ABC George Street, The Phoenix, and the Ultimate Picture Palace. While the first two show all the Hollywood blockbusters, the latter tend to show more unusual films, such as cult classics and foreign films, though the Ultimate Picture Palace often shows blockbusters some time after their original release.

Punting

In the summer, there are few better sources of entertainment in Oxford than punting. This pastime involves using a long pole to push and glide your punt, yourself, and your passengers along the river. Usually undertaken by experienced undergraduates who will swig away at a bottle of wine whilst deftly avoiding a protruding branch, punting is actually quite difficult - your first attempt will probably consist of you turning round in circles while onlookers chuckle.

Parks

If not brave enough to risk being the source of amusement for other punters, don't worry: the numerous parks in and around Oxford will provide ample open air activity for those sunny days. Southpark at the end of St Clement's provides a beautiful, scenic view of Oxford's dreaming spires, while Christ Church meadow can be the start of a very pleasant walk along the banks of the river Isis.

Ashmolean

Britain's oldest public museum
Beaumont Street

United Kingdom

Take a step away from the hustle and bustle of the city and savour the wonderful collections inside Britain's oldest public museum. John Tradescant's collection of archaeological rarities (both man-made and natural) originally opened to the public in South London in the early 17th century, for a charge of 6d (2.5p). The collection was inherited by Elias Ashmole and the Ashmolean opened in 1683. If you only have time to enjoy the antiquities galleries, with their exhibits dating from Paleolithic to Victorian times, your visit will have been worthwhile. You'll probably have to come back again if you also want to take in the collections of eastern and western art and the Heberden Coin Room. If time is very limited, try joining one of the lunchtime talks, which are always interesting and accessible. Admission: Free.

Christ Church

Oxford's most well-known college

Christ Church is the most famous Oxford college, probably the grandest, and certainly the most photographed. Founded as Cardinal College in 1525 by Cardinal Wolsey, the college became Christ Church in 1545. The college chapel, which is also the cathedral of the Oxford diocese, contains the reconstructed shrine of St Frideswide, the patron saint of Oxford, a rich variety of stained and painted glass including works by Abraham van Linge and Edward Burns-Jones, and a rare panel depicting the martyrdom of St. Thomas A. Becket.

Christ Church Meadow

Meadow close to city centre
St Aldates
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 4RT
United Kingdom
This meadow, set in the heart of Oxford, provides a wonderful contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city. Bounded on two sides by the rivers Cherwell and Isis, on the third by Christ Church, Merton College and part of the old city wall, and on the fourth by Poplar Walk, it is quite common to see cattle grazing here. Christ Church College now regards ownership of the meadow as a trust and fights hard to defend it against proposed encroachments.

Formerly Club Latino, Clementine's has transformed a lifeless nightclub into a trendy hotspot popular with Brookes and Ox Uni students. Centrally located, the nightclub is clean with contemporary decor and a friendly atmosphere. Although the dance floor is small, Clementine's has great music and drinks. It is the perfect place to visit for a night on the town.

The Coven II is hidden at the edge of central Oxford near the ice rink. Although from the outside, it looks quite grim and tiny, once you get inside, The Coven II turns out to be surprisingly spacious. Just outside the bar is a small dance floor where low-key, chilled-out music is usually played. However, the main event is on the enormous dance floor downstairs. This can be observed from a gallery, but you won't want to stay an onlooker for long as the powerful sound system will soon get you going.

Jongleurs is primarily a comedy club, featuring top stand-up acts from all over the UK and beyond. Unless you know your comedy acts well, there's a bit of pot luck involved, and the quality can vary. However, you're almost always guaranteed to find something you really like on the bill. From 11pm onwards, you can also enjoy a bit of music - the chrome-dominated bar is the perfect backdrop for a bit of after-show dancing.

Magdalen's impressive bell tower on High Street has become a landmark in the city. The 144 foot high tower was used as an observation post during the Civil War. Nowadays, every May Day morning the Magdalen College School Choir welcomes summer by singing from the top of the tower whilst several thousand people make merry in the street below. The college is also one of the most spacious in Oxford, with 100 acres of grounds, more than a mile of riverside walks and its own herd of deer. Admission is £3.00 for adults, £2.00 for concessions.

The Pitt Rivers is one of Oxford's hidden treasures. Named after Lieutenant-General Augustus Pitt Rivers whose collection of weapons, looms, costumes and all manner of religious and magical symbols was originally given to the South Kensington Museum in 1874. Ten years later, the collection was offered to Oxford University on condition that a special building was constructed to house it. The offer was accepted and the collection has now become one of the most important museums of ethnology and prehistory in the world. It forms part of the University Museum. Exhibits include a wonderful collection of musical instruments, a forty-foot-high totem pole, the largest collection of amulets and charms in existence, masks, fans, beadwork and belts as well as a collection of shrunken heads. Admission is free.

Set in a fairly small basement, PoNaNa has an air of intimacy about it. Leopard skin sofas and Moroccan tables make this seem more like a late-night bar than a club, but the music is still the main attraction: for a range of eclectic break beats, PoNaNa can't be beaten. The absence of draught beer may come as a disappointment to those used to student nights elsewhere, and you may have to turn up near the 9pm opening time to avoid queues, but once you're in, you can stay until 2a. There are branches of this club in London and other university towns.

South  Park

Greenery south of the city
St Clements
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4

South Park is a beautiful park in the south of the city towards Headington. Situated on one of the few hills in Oxford, it's the place where people go sledging when it snows and tripping through the daisies when spring is in the air, and organised fireworks displays are held here in November. The park is also the home of the circus that seems to pop into town every so often. It's a delightful spot - just the place to have a picnic or walk your dog.

The UPP used to be an art-house cinema like the Phoenix, but economics have put an end to that. Now it seems to show all the films you missed the first time round, which can be a real boon for the more dozey film-lover. Unlike most cinemas, it has a refreshing attitude to food and drink: you can actually take your own inside, so you don't have to eat popcorn. Smoking is also allowed. Tickets are cheaper than most cinemas (around £5.50) and there are late showings at weekends.
