Upmarket curry house |
228-230 Cowley Road Oxford OX4 1UH United Kingdom +44 1865 79 4945 http://www.aziz.uk.com/ manager@aziz.uk.com |
An evening at Aziz feels like a good evening out, so dismiss any mundane images of your local curry house. The waitresses wear saris, booking is necessary and people drink wine rather than beer with their food. The interior is something of a fairy grotto, with little pixie lights twinkling all around the large white room, and trees in pots create a garden feel. The food is slightly more expensive than typical Indian fare, but much better too. The usual dishes are on offer but the quality of the ingredients makes all the difference e.g. the prawns taste as though they were caught fresh that morning and the meat is tender. The music won't drown you out |
Unit 3 Burlington House Little Clarendon Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 2HS United Kingdom +44 1865 55 3543 |
The bar at the Beat Cafe is decorated with big black and white photos and seems to have a constant techno soundtrack on the go. However, don't let that make you think it's an uncomfortable or overly trendy kind of bar. On the contrary, it is as good for low-key coffees in the afternoon as it is for evening socialising. With its chessboard tables at the front, it often has a tranquil atmosphere which can be very relaxing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Yummy pizzas |
23 Cowley Road Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1HP United Kingdom +44 1865 20 0232 |
Open early enough for a morning coffee and late enough for cocktails and wines, this restaurant has more than just food on offer. A bar in the middle of the room illustrates why, for many people, this is predominantly a drinking establishment. However, you should not miss out on the great pizzas here. There are also quite a few salads on offer and one or two other dishes, including a special. Wash it all down with a house wine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Multi-purpose shopping and eating |
High Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 United Kingdom |
The Covered Market is a delightful place to wander around. It offers protection from the elements, but looks nothing like your average shopping centre. The avenues here are crammed with small shops and cafes, and the products on offer are all of good quality. The shops sell everything from clothes and fresh pasta to books and boots: you'll find butcher's shops alongside souvenir shops and greengrocers. After all that shopping there are plenty of small cafes where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular city pub |
Norfolk Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 1PY United Kingdom +44 1865 24 8507 |
The Duke of York is situated next to the Westgate car park, which unfortunately dominates the view from the pub. However, the grim view means that the pub has raised its game considerably in an attempt to make itself an attractive destination after all. With its cocktails, karaoke and other events, this lively pub certainly pulls in a big and animated crowd, particularly on the weekends. It has recently been refurbished to give it a much slicker look and its popularity has grown accordingly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oxford's finest seafood |
36/37 St. Clements Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1AB United Kingdom +44 1865 24 3003 http://www.fishers-restaurant.... |
A fine seafood restaurant with fresh fish every day from Billingsgate Market. With the interior done up to look like the inside of a ship and kitchens called the, 'galleys', you're sure of a real seafarer's experience here. The pleasant surroundings and friendly staff ensure that you'll enjoy a very relaxing meal. The menu ranges from the standard fish and chips to grilled salmon, lobster and huge shellfish platters. Daily specials include shark, swordfish and monkfish. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beautiful conservatory |
61 Banbury Road Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6PE United Kingdom +44 1865 55 3540 http://www.gees-restaurant.co.uk/ info@geesrestaurant.co.uk |
Set in a beautiful plant-filled conservatory, Gee's is perfect for summer dining. The high ceiling and huge windows give this restaurant a very airy feel. It is almost always full for lunch and dinner, and is a favourite for family celebrations. The menu is always diverse and the seafood can be especially interesting. With house wines ranging from GBP9 to GBP15 and a relaxing bar area, Gee's is a very pleasant place to dine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diverse menu |
97 St Clement's Oxford OX4 1AR United Kingdom +44 1865 24 1158 |
Billed as the 'only international restaurant in Oxford', this establishment is run by a very friendly owner and offers a great diversity of dishes as well as a tapas menu. Simply but prettily decorated, with pine floorboards, Genie's is the ideal venue for a candle-lit dinner for two. The menu offers food from all around the Mediterranean, including Italian pasta dishes and Persian, Turkish and Lebanese dishes. You can have a selection of tasty tapas. Wash it all down with a bottle of house wine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sophisticated bar/cafe/restaurant |
84 High Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 4BG United Kingdom +44 1865 20 4463 |
This is a truly luxurious cafe: the decor is spectacular, the coffee and food are exquisite, and the cost is inordinate. This is definitely a place to come for a treat or just to fritter some money away. The Grand is a gilded, mirror-clad art deco romp with classical columns thrown in - a wonderful refuge when it's a bit grey outside. The stylish decor complements the high quality food - the lunch menu is especially good. Apart from grills and other bistro standbys, you can enjoy oysters, elaborate salads and many more beautifully presented and satisfying dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hearty Jamaican fare |
68 Cowley Road Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1JB United Kingdom +44 1865 72 5984 |
This is the real thing. The waitress will give you the day's offerings from memory - there are no actual menus - and you'll soon be eating authentic Jamaican food. The unassuming dining room is just a simple space with enough tables to generate atmosphere. Eating here is a social experience, and the surroundings take second place to good conversation and great food. Daily selections feature jerk chicken, red snapper, goat curry, potatoes etc - all served in generous portions. Finish with a fruity pudding, and wash everything down with Jamaican beer. There are no pretensions here - just good, well-made food in a fun environment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Students' curry house |
64 Cowley Road Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1JB United Kingdom +44 1865 25 0165 |
This is one of the cheapest curry houses in town, offering very good value for money with an extensive menu - including lots of dishes you won't find elsewhere. Aimed primarily at the student market, the decor is very simple and traditional. Typically visited by students to celebrate birthdays, sporting victories, defeats and draws, the Kashmir always has a bustling atmosphere and the service is good too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ever-popular city-centre pub |
40 Holywell Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 3SP United Kingdom +44 1865 24 2369 |
This pub, on the junction of Broad Street, Holywell Street and Parks Road, has been a favourite with tourists and students alike for years. Inside, it is spacious with several cosy rooms, including a non-smoking area. Photographs and paintings adorning the walls proclaim the pub's links with the city and royal visits. There are a few tables available outside on the street. There is an extensive pub food menu, but the food is fairly expensive and of average standard. Food is served from 11:30a-2:30p and from 5:30p-9p. The drinks are pricey - a pint of lager from here is as expensive as anywhere in Oxford. Disabled access is difficult and the toilets are at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beautiful setting |
268 Woodstock Road Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 7NW United Kingdom +44 1865 31 1936 |
Set in a beautiful north Oxford villa that could easily have been transported from the Mediterranean, the Lemon Tree puts the emphasis on presentation and appearance. The lemony colour of the walls gives this restaurant a summery feel, and there are tall windows looking out onto a leafy garden. The food is also expertly presented, but quality and taste aren't overlooked. While some of the dishes on the contemporary Mediterranean menu are very imaginative, others are delightfully simple. The wine list is excellent too, and the puddings are worth saving room for. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fun young Tex-Mex |
36/37 Queen Street Oxford OX1 1ER United Kingdom +44 (0)1865 24 2192 http://www.maxwells.co.uk/oxfo... |
With a reputation for cocktails at night and loud coffees during the day, it may come as a surprise to learn that Maxwell's is actually a great place to get a burger. The decor is that of a 1950s American diner, with some of the cosiness of Cheers thrown in. The waitresses are attentive beyond the call of duty and will help you decide what you want, even when the cocktails have made you lose all desire for a meal. It's simple fast food, but prepared with real care. You could have tasty onion rings or fajitas (both vegetarian and chicken), but burgers (with fries of course!) are really the thing to have here. The bar is well stocked, but beer or cocktails are the best choices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old Oxford pub |
17 High Street Oxford OX1 4AG United Kingdom +44 1865 24 4563 |
The Mitre is a real curiosity. It seems to attract tourists by the bucketful, probably with its talk of being one of the oldest pubs in the city. However, you shouldn't be fooled by such propaganda. The Mitre is essentially a new pub that's been made to look old with clever wood-staining paints. Inside, it is dark and the decor isn't particularly inspiring. However, it's one of those pubs where families with young children enjoy a meal and a drink after a tiring day's shopping. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Raymond Blanc's restaurant |
71-72 Walton Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6AG United Kingdom +44 1865 51 0999 http://www.lepetitblanc.co.uk/... oxford@lepetitblanc.co.uk |
As one of Raymond Blanc's creations, this restaurant lives up to expectations. It's not as expensive as his famed Manoir aux Quat Saisons' but the quality of the food is superb, and as the portions are not huge, you'll have room to indulge in a full three-course meal. It's a lively bistro, but you won't feel you're being rushed. The minimalist decor makes this a very chic place to dine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarian Chinese |
43b St Clements Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1AG United Kingdom +44 1865 20 2787 http://www.thepinkgiraffe.com/ email@thepinkgiraffe.com |
There aren't many Chinese restaurants that even attempt to cater for vegetarians in any serious way. However, this one goes all-out to make sure non-meat eaters can have a good, authentic Chinese without being restricted to stir fry or starters. There's a selection of soya-based dishes, and lots of seafood to choose from if your guests are the carnivorous type. Clean, quiet and well-lit, it is a good family venue. The £13.50 all-you-can-eat menu allows you to choose the specific dishes that you want - a definite advantage over the buffet that selects the options for you. Not the cheapest Chinese, but this is good quality fare. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small but tasty |
Golden Cross Cornmarket Street Oxford OX1 3EX United Kingdom +44 1865 79 0442 http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk/ |
Considering it's part of a chain, this restaurant has a lot of character. This pizzeria has found itself a lovely spot, upstairs in a beautiful old Oxford tavern in a quiet part of the town center. The pizzas, although not as large as those in some other fast-food pizzerias, are extremely tasty, with all the standard toppings on a delicious, crisp base. The house wine is very good, though not cheap at £10.60 a bottle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Standard chain |
10 High Street Oxford OX1 4DB United Kingdom +44 1865 72 4473 http://www.pizzahut.co.uk/ |
This outlet of the popular chain adheres to the successful formula of the countless other Pizza Huts worldwide, both in terms of menu and decor. The restaurant is done up like an American diner. Thankfully, the High Street outlet has a large spiral staircase leading to the downstairs eating area, which adds a bit of character. The pizzas look more like they've come off a production line than out of a pizza oven, though they are large. A student favourite is the excellent value £5 all-you-can-eat buffet, which offers access to the very good salad bar, as well as a limited selection of pizzas, pastas and ice-creams. Also at 61 George Street (tel: +44 1865 79 0089). Review © 2007, Wcities |

The student's pub |
1 Iffley Road The Plain Oxford, Oxfordshire OX4 1EA United Kingdom +44 1865 26 2291 |
Situated on the Magdalen roundabout between Iffley Road and Cowley Road, this is one of the most popular student pubs in Oxford. It used to be a cheap place to drink, but nowadays is relatively expensive. With a music venue upstairs, the pub can feel more like a pre-gig bar than a traditional spot to sit down and relax over a pint. However, if you want to go somewhere with a busy, Friday-night sort of atmosphere, this place is ideal. There are even benches outside in case you need to take a breather. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Out of town delight |
195 Godstow Road Wolvercote Oxford, Oxon OX2 8PN United Kingdom +44 1865 30 2071 |
Although this is a bus journey or bike ride out of town, it's a must for anyone with time on their hands in Oxford. Next to the river, with outside tables along the bank, The Trout serves a fine selection of food and wine. It gets very busy in the summer, but there can be a lengthy wait for food orders at any time of year. However, if you have to wait for your food, this is a very pleasant place to do it. The river views are delightful - why not take a leisurely stroll along the bank to walk off your meal? Review © 2007, Wcities |

A pub worth tracking down |
4 Bath Place Holywell Street Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 4SU United Kingdom +44 1865 24 3235 |
The Turf is one of Oxford's oldest pubs. It is accessible only down a narrow alley, nestling up against a section of the old city wall. For trivia buffs, this was the scene of the hero's courting in Thomas Hardy's, 'Jude the Obscure'. Inside, the low-ceilinged rooms are arranged on two levels. Outside, there are rows of benches in the courtyard, which is warmed by braziers in the winter. The Turf offers a good range of beers, lagers and real ales, plus mulled wine on colder nights. Food is served from noon until 8pm. Review © 2007, Wcities |
