College rowing races |
The Isis (Thames) Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 United Kingdom http://archive.comlab.ox.ac.uk... |
The highlights of college rowing are 'Summer Eights' in late May and the less prestigious 'Torpids' in late February. On each occasion, racing takes place over four days from just south of Donnington Bridge to the boathouses south of Folly Bridge. Commonly referred to as 'bump races' because the boats start in procession at 10-metre intervals and try to catch or 'bump' the boat in front. When this happens the boats involved in the 'bumping' stop racing until the next day when they change places. The objective is eventually to get to the front and become 'Head of the River'. Admission: free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

On the last Wednesday in June each year, honorary degrees are conferred on distinguished international figures in the Sheldonian Theater. Although the ceremony itself is restricted to university dignitaries and special guests, the procession to and from the Sheldonian is open to everyone and the crowds lining the route are treated to a spectacular, colorful display. After the ceremony, the dignitaries emerge and make their way in procession to All Souls College for lunch. Don't forget to bring your camera! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Welcoming the summer |
High St Magdalen College Tower Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 4AU United Kingdom +44 (0)1865 72 6871 (Tourist Information) |
If you are at a loose end at 6a on the first day of May, why not join 15,000 people in the streets and bridge below Magdalen College tower to welcome in the summer? The college choir stands at the top of the tower singing a 350-year-old hymn, Morris Dancers lead the merriment at ground level, and punting, champagne breakfasts and general jollification are the order of the day. It's thought this celebration has been held since the beginning of the 16th century when the tower was new. Call Oxford Tourist Information for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fun in the street |
St Giles Oxford OX1 United Kingdom |
This large outdoor funfair may turn Oxford's normal traffic problem into a nightmare, but it's worth it. Each year, locals come out in thousands to enjoy the rides, the fortune tellers and the candy floss. The fair completely fills St Giles for two days. In 1937, Sir John Betjeman wrote 'it is about the biggest fair in England... with freak shows, roundabouts... every sort of fairman finds it worth his while to come to St Giles.' The fair is open from early morning to late into the evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |
