Aziz

Upmarket curry house
228-230 Cowley Road
Oxford OX4 1UH
United Kingdom
+44 1865 79 4945
http://www.aziz.uk.com/
An evening at Aziz feels like a good evening out, so dismiss any mundane images of your local curry house. The waitresses wear saris, booking is necessary and people drink wine rather than beer with their food. The interior is something of a fairy grotto, with little pixie lights twinkling all around the large white room, and trees in pots create a garden feel. The food is slightly more expensive than typical Indian fare, but much better too. The usual dishes are on offer but the quality of the ingredients makes all the difference e.g. the prawns taste as though they were caught fresh that morning and the meat is tender.

Cafe Noir

Excellent French restaurant
3 Osler Road
Oxford OX3 9BH
United Kingdom
+44 1865 74 1300
Cafe Noir is the real thing. Unlike other so-called French restaurants, this one both looks and tastes authentic - it looks like it's straight out of a Goddard movie. Simple sophistication is the key here at this uncluttered restaurant. The pavement tables are ideal in summer and add to the French ambience. The food here is first class: the pork is a particular speciality of the chef and the wine is sold at a good price. The service is superb as well, making dinner here a delightful experience.

Elizabeth

Expensive high-class restaurant
82 St Aldates
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 1RA
United Kingdom
+44 1865 24 2230
http://www.restaurant-elizabet...
This is the place to come to celebrate an important occasion. With a reputation for being Oxford's best and most expensive restaurant, Elizabeth's is universally admired. Unpretentious but classy, Elizabeth's is stylish in a restrained sort of way, with, strangely enough, Spanish motifs predominating. The food is excellent although vegetarians might feel a little left out. The wine list boasts more than 200 variations, and the puddings are something you cannot hope to avoid. Elizabeth's never disappoints.

Gee's

Beautiful conservatory
61 Banbury Road
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6PE
United Kingdom
+44 1865 55 3540
http://www.gees-restaurant.co.uk/
Set in a beautiful plant-filled conservatory, Gee's is perfect for summer dining. The high ceiling and huge windows give this restaurant a very airy feel. It is almost always full for lunch and dinner, and is a favourite for family celebrations. The menu is always diverse and the seafood can be especially interesting. With house wines ranging from GBP9 to GBP15 and a relaxing bar area, Gee's is a very pleasant place to dine.

Lemon Tree

Beautiful setting
268 Woodstock Road
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 7NW
United Kingdom
+44 1865 31 1936
Set in a beautiful north Oxford villa that could easily have been transported from the Mediterranean, the Lemon Tree puts the emphasis on presentation and appearance. The lemony colour of the walls gives this restaurant a summery feel, and there are tall windows looking out onto a leafy garden. The food is also expertly presented, but quality and taste aren't overlooked. While some of the dishes on the contemporary Mediterranean menu are very imaginative, others are delightfully simple. The wine list is excellent too, and the puddings are worth saving room for.

Luna Caprese

Fishing village feel
4 North Parade
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6LX
United Kingdom
+44 1865 55 4812
Luna Caprese is a gem on the elegant North Parade. It's not much to look at on the outside, but once through the door you are transported to an Italian fishing village where gentlemanly mafiosi wait on tables. The only downside is that the decor is slightly tacky, with grotesque angling gear stuck to the walls. That said however, the atmosphere is second to none, the service is extremely helpful, and the choice of either open tables or closed booths is a nice touch. The food here is a real treat: the pâté starter is enough to ruin your appetite alone, but save space for the meat courses that come dripping with the most delightful sauces. The vegetable side dishes are done to a turn and the portions are generous.

Manoir aux Quat' Saisons

Raymond Blanc's Michelin-starred manor
Church Road
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX44 7PD
United Kingdom
+44 1844 27 8881
http://www.manoir.com/
Set in a picturesque Oxfordshire village, Le Manoir looks like a typical 15th-century manor house from the outside, but the interiors are a pleasing mix of modern and traditional design. Most people go for the seven-course prix-fixe menu, which even at around 80 pounds a head, is still good value. Beautiful tidbits include morel mushrooms and white asparagus with wine sauce, scallops, fresh crab timbale, gamey pigeon accompanied by a fried ball of foie gras and decadent tiramisu.

Petit Blanc

Raymond Blanc's restaurant
71-72 Walton Street
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6AG
United Kingdom
+44 1865 51 0999
http://www.lepetitblanc.co.uk/...
As one of Raymond Blanc's creations, this restaurant lives up to expectations. It's not as expensive as his famed Manoir aux Quat Saisons' but the quality of the food is superb, and as the portions are not huge, you'll have room to indulge in a full three-course meal. It's a lively bistro, but you won't feel you're being rushed. The minimalist decor makes this a very chic place to dine.

Pierre Victoire

Authentic French chain
9 Little Clarendon Street
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 2HP
United Kingdom
+44 1865 31 6616
Although part of a chain, Pierre Victoire does manage to convey the sense of being a truly authentic French restaurant - it is even managed by a French lady! Wooden tables and rickety wooden stairs dominate the restaurant's closely packed two floors. With its intimate lighting, Pierre Victoire is suitable for both families or couples - groups might be a bit squeezed - and the Edith Piaf background music certainly gets you in the right frame of mind. The food here is delightful, particularly the juicy and succulent duck. Look out for the lunchtime bargains.

Rosamund the Fair

Oxford's cruising restaurant
Castlemill Boatyard
Cardigan Street
Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 6BW
United Kingdom
+44 1865 55 3370
http://www.rosamundthefair.co.uk
Rosamund the Fair is an unusual restaurant - it's on a boat - and worth a look if you get the chance. However, the restaurant is not carried by its novelty value alone: the food here is excellent, and prepared using lots of local produce. The menu is changed daily, and includes a variety of meat and fish dishes in what is described as 'modern English' style. There is one sitting for lunch and dinner when the boat then 'casts off' down the river whilst your meal is prepared.
