The Canadian specialists |
29 Rue de la Parcheminerie Paris 75005 France +33 (0)1 4633 1624 |
This is a friendly bookstore in the heart of the Latin Quarter that specializes in Canadian authors (French and English) as well as Anglo-American authors. Down in the vaulted cellar is the Canadian Club, a place for everyone interested in Canadian literature and culture to meet over a cup of tea and conversation. Keep an eye out for the cockleshell relief above the door that marks this spot as part of the Pilgrim's Way. This shell, a symbol of Saint James, once lined the path of the faithful, all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. Ask for a calendar of author's signings and readings. Wine Merchants with a bar |

Nicolas, everyone's favourite chain of wine merchants, offers something new for their branch in the redeveloped Bercy : you can not only buy wine here, but drink it, and accompany it with a plate of charcuterie or a coq au vin. It is not hard to guess why this bar has become one of the most popular of the Cour Saint-Emilion, a recently renovated and pedestrianised yard. The choice of wines is enormous (you can order any wine and get them to bring it up form their immense cellar), and the prices are low. From furniture to clothes via art |
Place de la Bastille Paris France +33 1 4742 9056 info@visitluxembourg.org |
The Bastille area finds its source on Place de la Bastille. It is an informal area of the 11th arrondissement; the triangle formed by Rue du Faubourg-St-Antoine, Boulevard Beaumarchais and Boulevard Voltaire marks it out. The Bastille area used to be the centre of Paris' fine furniture industry, and home to many skilled artisans and cabinet-makers. Indeed, its Rue du Faubourg-St-Antoine remains one of the best places in Paris to buy furniture and other articles for the home. But the Bastille hasn't rested on its laurels; once again it's the fashionable place to visit. It has modern restaurants, clothes and shoe shops popping up everywhere and, notably, an enormous Gap store right next to the shop of legendary French designer, Jean-Paul Gaultier. Rue Charonne is also worth a visit for its increasing number of designers and art galleries. Whether you want to shop for shoes, furniture or art, the Bastille area, formerly the centre of Paris' fine furniture industry, has a lot to offer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Purposefully Designed Library |

Paul Marmottan, who lived from 1856 to 1932, inherited a fortune from the coal industry and created consumer cooperatives, but rather than pursuing the expected career in industry, administration, or politics, he chose to spend his energy as an amateur historian, collector, and patron of the arts. He left behind a museum as well as this library, where everything seems designed to inspire and instruct. The motto at Bimbo Tower is, "Paris experimental mondo shop vs the Japanese underground." This may not mean much to the average boutique shopper, but to the discerning experimental music enthusiast this translates into the place to find music (as in everything but MP3s), books, DVDs, obscure graphic novels and other hard-to-track-down paraphernalia. Offering the best of the old and the new from all over the world, Bimbo Tower is the one place in town where you will definitely not hear the latest Madonna single being played over the PA; this independent music destination's goal is to broaden your musical horizons. A must for any serious music fan trying to get the most out of the Parisian scene. - Cynthia Valdez Review © 2007, Wcities |

A shrimp in hand... |
4 Rue du Débarcadère Paris 75017 France +33 1 4572 2255 |
Though the tables are tightly packed together this doesn't hinder the menu from being quite good. Serving mostly provincial cuisine, the best thing to eat here are the gambas(shrimp) which are delicious. The wine is also good, though the meals are quite expensive at almost 82 euros for a set meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An in house boutique at the Palais de Tokyo, Black Block is run by André, an artist himself. One can assume Black Block to be Santa Claus's warehouse, or his pile of rejects, depending on how you look at it. A boutique of novelty items, it's almost a museum in itself given the collection of limited edition art pieces, wall paintings, t-shirts, vintage clothing, video games, toys, records; the list is endless. Fresh bread 24 hours a day |
10 Rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie Paris 75006 France +33 (0)1 4326 8972 |
Can you think of anything better, after a night on the town, than fresh bread or nice warm croissants? The problem is, they can be pretty hard to find at 4 in the morning. There is good news for night workers and nightclubbers alike: this bakery is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is a rare, if not unique service in Paris. One can therefore understand a price increase at night, between 9p and 6a. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Paris' Premiere Shopping Street |
Boulevard Haussmann Paris 75009 France |
Boulevard Haussmann is one of the grands boulevards opened in 1864 to help ease Paris' transition from a medieval city to a modern capitol during the Napoleonic Era. Masterminded by Georges Haussman as part of an extravagant series of reforms, these boulevards are famous for infusing the then cluttered cityscape of Paris with striking doses of airy breadth and linearity. Today Boulevard Haussmann is home to some of the word's most elaborate department stores, dubbed the Grands Magasins. Here you will find the immaculate Galeries Lafayette and Le Printemps, two must-see shopping stops for first-rate Parisian Couture, home goods, and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Books on the Seine |
Quai de Montebello Paris 75005 France |
More for perusal than serious book-buying, Les Bouquinistes (book peddlars), with their characteristic green metal lockers and sit-around-all-day attitude, form a vital part of Parisian folklore. Most vendors are out along the banks of the Seine come rain or shine, selling an array of antique and not-so-antique books, manuscripts, prints, and postcards. Don't miss them - having no legal status, they are very likely to disappear one of these days. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This pastry temple opened in 1802, but has been modernised since. It includes a three-level space, a 140-square-metre boutique, a plush tea-room and a bar for quick meals. There is an extensive choice of pastries and chocolates; their excellent quality has won Dalloyau an excellent repuation around the world. Other fashionable Dalloyau locations in Paris are at Bastille (5, boulevard Beaumarchais, 4th), Convention (69, rue de la Convention, 15th), Raspail (63, rue de Grenelle, 7th), and Luxembourg (2, place Edmond Rostand, 6th).
