Opéra Garnier, named after the architect who designed it in 1862, was immortalized by writer Gaston Leroux in his Phantom of the Opera. The architecture is a mixture of baroque, classical, Greek and Napoleonic styles. Adorned with mosaics, the foyer has a cupola decorated by painter Marc Chagall and an impressive Rococo staircase, which leads to the theatre's magnificent reception rooms. Outside, four stone statues represent allegories of Music, Lyric Poetry, Lyric Theatre and Dance. Since the opening of the Opéra Bastille, the Opéra Garnier has concentrated on dance. The eccentric house of a Symbolist artist |
14 Rue de la Rochefoucauld Paris 75009 France +33 1 4874 3850 http://www.musee-moreau.fr/ |
This museum was created in the residence of the symbolist painter, Gustave Moreau (1826-1898)in accordance with his last request. He set up his studio in this peaceful place, which now hosts a collection of thousands of his paintings and drawings. Some pieces help visitors understand the style and the state-of-mind of a painter who found inspiration in mythology, biblical and literary works. It also helps to determine the evolution of this artist's rather personal approach. Following the steps of the Pre-Raphaelites, Moreau created his own world of fantastic characters painted in shimmering colours. He later inspired the Surrealists who must have found in this eccentric house some ingredients to build their own world. Admission: Adults 22F(EUR 3.35), Concession 15F(EUR 2.28),under-16s free. 16 Rue Chaptal Paris 75009 France +33 1 55 31 95 67 http://www.paris.fr/FR/ASP/SIT... |
The building that is now home to this museum originally belonged to painter Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) and his nephew, the writer Ernest Renan. After their deaths, the place became a celebration of their lives and their circle of intellectual friends, which included Chopin, Delacroix and George Sand. The museum's main room (devoted entirely to Sand) exhibits a selection of the novelist's personal belongings, including a collection of watercolours, lockets and jewellery. Temporary exhibitions on 19th-century artistic and literary life are organized on a regular basis in Ary Scheffers studio. Review © 2007, Wcities |
