Fremantle Prison

Prison life of old
The Terrace
Fremantle
Perth, WA 6010
Australia
+61 8 9336 9200
http://www.fremantleprison.com.au
Some say ghosts haunt Fremantle Prison - possibly the 43 men and one woman hung on the site. Built by convicts in the 1850s, it operated as a maximum-security prison until 1991 with the last hanging in 1964. The limestone buildings set an eerie scene for both day and night tours. The Candlelight Tours (Wednesday and Friday nights) are a treat. However, the favourite is the annual Halloween Tour. Facilities include cafe, souvenir shop, ice cream parlour and a photographer. Tours: Adults AUD12; children AUD4.80; concession AUD9.50 (Day). Adults AUD14.40; children AUD7.20; concession AUD12 (Night).

A tram service departs from the square (on the hour) touring Fremantle's significant landmarks.

Leighton Beach

Top surfing
Port Beach Road
North Fremantle
Perth, WA 6159
Australia
+61 8 9431 7878 (Tourist Information)
This is surfer territory year round. It is not often that you will drive along Port Beach Road without spotting a wet suited body in the swell. An artificial reef was constructed off shore to ensure good waves on a regular basis. This is a great swimming, surfing and body surfing beach with rolling sand dunes and a stretch of cliffs that create a wind-swept sense of isolation. There are beach entry points, car parks, and observation spots with shaded picnic tables dotted along the coastal road.
