Perth throws a major celebration on Australia Day and practically the whole city shows up for the fun. The excitement starts early with activities on the Perth foreshore. Water displays take place on the Swan River and a mid-afternoon air show draws huge crowds. An excellent line-up of local acts perform at the Esplanade park in the city, starting with the Survival concert in recognition of Indigenous Australia. However, the true event happens when the sun goes down...fireworks. Central Perth overflows with people as they vie for the best spots to watch. While the city offers an exhilarating atmosphere, there are also a number of excellent vantage points along the river. Admission is free.

The sprawling white beaches in Perth are sensational - this one tends to be particularly popular. Regular swimmers, picnicking families and sun-bakers frequent Cottlesloe. It also offers a wonderful choice of locations to watch the sunset. Enjoy spectacular views across the Indian Ocean from one of the many cafes and restaurants along Marine Parade or from a tranquil spot on the sand. At the southern end of the beach, a reasonably sheltered reef proves a great spot for snorkelling. The main beach area has showers and toilets.

This winery is somewhat unique when compared to the others surrounding Perth. The vines here are planted on the rolling slopes of the Darling Range, rather than on the river flats. Winemakers, Balt and Caspar van der Meer, use organic growing methods to produce their range of wines. The estate offers fine dining in a particularly Australian bush setting. Trees reach up through the roof of the dining area and patrons can enjoy superb views over the vines and valley below.

Situated in the Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles are definitely worth the three-hour drive. These lunar-like limestone formations are an awesome sight dotted across the sandy landscape. This tour is more than just a trip north. You will stop at Yanchep National Park, home to koalas, kangaroos and emus, while en route to the Pinnacles. On arrival at the Pinnacles, there is plenty of time to explore these unusual formations then it is on to Cervantes for lunch - a wonderful little coastal town. The tour take place at 7a every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Many people would relish the chance to swim with dolphins. Rockingham Dolphins has been operating since 1987 and know all the right spots when it comes to locating wild dolphins. They take daily trips from September 1 until May 31. Cruise through the waters off Rockingham--home to around 180 bottlenose dolphins. When you find the dolphins, leap into the water and savour this unique experience. All dolphins at Rockingham are wild, (meaning no tricks, no training), thus experience the mammal in it's true habitual state! The trip runs between two and five hours. The other option is a dolphin watch tour.

Only 25 minutes by ferry from the mainland, enjoy this aquatic paradise. Rottnest Island, 11 kilometres long and almost five kilometres wide, boasts numerous fantastic beaches. Enjoy leisure activities galore. Bicycles, the main source of transport, can be hired at Thomson Bay. The amazing array of marine life living in the coral reefs (that fringe the island) ensure superb snorkelling and scuba diving. The island also proves very popular with city surfers short on good surf. Beware - the flora and fauna is protected, including the cute quokkas (native marsupials like mini-kanagroos).

Round House

History with a view
10 Arthur Head
Perth, WA 6010
Australia
+61 8 9336 6897
This attraction, Western Australia's oldest public building, was completed in 1831. The Round House was used as a jail and a signal house. The limestone structure is very simple but the location stunning. Sitting on a high spot at the edge of the Indian Ocean, the site provides a fantastic view. You can look back down the Swan River to the city of Perth or out towards Rottnest Island. The gunnery tradition continues each day at 1pm when a visitor, selected from the crowd, fires the cannon. Admission: Adults AUD2; children free.

Established in the 1970s, Sir James Mitchell Park was initiated specifically for passive recreation and it serves its purpose superbly. The only building in the entire area is the old Wesley College Boatshed at Coode Street Jetty. The park stretches along the river from Mends Street jetty to McCallum Park at the Causeway Bridge. Set in the Avon Valley is an 1800-hectare expanse of national parklands. The Swan River, no longer the calm waterway seen in Perth, runs through the park. It becomes a thrashing white water mass making it a favoured location for canoeing and rafting. The walking trails are excellent -shaded by Wundoo, Jarrah and Flooded Gums - and kangaroos and bird life flourish. During spring the wildflowers are spectacular and in winter the rugged scenery is captivating. There are numerous picnic and barbecue areas. Swimming in the river is not recommended.
