Australia Day Lotto Skyworks

Pyrotechnic brilliance
Forrest Dr and Fraser Ave
(Kings Park)
Perth, WA 6000
Australia
+1 300 36 1351
Perth throws a major celebration on Australia Day and practically the whole city shows up for the fun. The excitement starts early with activities on the Perth foreshore. Water displays take place on the Swan River and a mid-afternoon air show draws huge crowds. An excellent line-up of local acts perform at the Esplanade park in the city, starting with the Survival concert in recognition of Indigenous Australia. However, the true event happens when the sun goes down...fireworks. Central Perth overflows with people as they vie for the best spots to watch. While the city offers an exhilarating atmosphere, there are also a number of excellent vantage points along the river. Admission is free.

In January 1995 Perth's second Rosie O'Grady's opened in Fremantle. Originally the Old Federal Hotel, built in the 1880s, it has been tastefully remodelled with the front balcony reinstalled. Rosie's caters weddings, twenty-first birthdays and business seminars. It boasts three function rooms and four separate bar areas. The main bar features live music every Friday night, there is also the Curragh and garden bars as well as a brasserie for a la carte dining. Wine costs around AUD5 per glass, beer from AUD2.80. Food includes garlic mushrooms (AUD10.50), Thai squid salad (AUD11) and Fremantle seafood platter (AUD14.90).

Visit this gallery in the west-end of Fremantle, an area renowned for Edwardian architecture. The Staircase Gallery boasts a reputation as a premier gallery for fine art and fine woodcraft. A magnificent sculptural staircase created by the Battersea Studio leads to the second floor. The staircase, crafted from recycled materials and large Sheoaks, features steps made from the boilerplate of the old whaling station at Carnarvon (a town north of Perth). The gallery specialises in exquisitely carved Jarrah, a durable hardwood unique to Western Australia. Admission is free.

Reality is virtual around here. Race your friends (or the clock) at Daytona, shoot-to-kill in Time Crisis, test your martial arts in Tekkan or try your coordination at downhill skiing, basketball and air hockey. Heaven for children on weekends, with games for a variety of ages and skills. Through the week though, you will see businessmen on lunch breaks, while at night a mixed and vibrant crowd test their skills. Multi-game cards are available at discount prices.

This is a popular hangout for jazz lovers and beautiful people. What seems spacious by day becomes congested by night, as live blues and jazz artists take to the tiny stage. The intimate ambiance suits the mood as the night progresses and the crowd moves in. The food menu offers snacking and finger foods (AUD4-AUD14.50) and the usual range of alcohol and soft drinks. Try a cocktail, which will set you back around AUD10, but it is worth it just for the decoration.
