In these imposing limestone buildings visitors will find contemporary art exhibitions, Fremantle's local history museum, superb crafts, a tempting bookshop, shaded lawns and a sunny courtyard cafe. Originally built as a lunatic asylum in the 1860s it is now listed by the National Trust. The centre hosts popular Sunday afternoon concerts, art courses and festival performances in its spacious grounds. The Greenhill Gallery offers a sparse and unadorned space to view art. Content to let the works speak for themselves, it appears to be a gamble that pays off. Visit this gallery in the west-end of Fremantle, an area renowned for Edwardian architecture. The Staircase Gallery boasts a reputation as a premier gallery for fine art and fine woodcraft. A magnificent sculptural staircase created by the Battersea Studio leads to the second floor. The staircase, crafted from recycled materials and large Sheoaks, features steps made from the boilerplate of the old whaling station at Carnarvon (a town north of Perth).
