Pyrotechnic brilliance |
Forrest Dr and Fraser Ave (Kings Park) Perth, WA 6000 Australia +1 300 36 1351 |
Perth throws a major celebration on Australia Day and practically the whole city shows up for the fun. The excitement starts early with activities on the Perth foreshore. Water displays take place on the Swan River and a mid-afternoon air show draws huge crowds. An excellent line-up of local acts perform at the Esplanade park in the city, starting with the Survival concert in recognition of Indigenous Australia. However, the true event happens when the sun goes down...fireworks. Central Perth overflows with people as they vie for the best spots to watch. While the city offers an exhilarating atmosphere, there are also a number of excellent vantage points along the river. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Greenhill Gallery offers a sparse and unadorned space to view art. Content to let the works speak for themselves, it appears to be a gamble that pays off. The gallery consists of two levels with wooden floorboards, and a subtle low-lit basement level. A range of prominent contemporary artists feature at Greenhill. The work tends to reflect the traditional end of contemporary, but selected exhibitors always shine here. Greenhill also regularly exhibits the work of emerging artists. The gallery welcomes browsing. Alternative clubbing |
104 Murray Street Perth, WA 6000 Australia +61 (0)8 9325 3638 |
Loft is known as Perth's only alternative nightclub. One regular describes the scene as being a different experience every night. Sunday is 80s night so wear big hair and walk like an Egyptian. The interior is sheer decadence. The decor is dark, replete with ripped up and gaffer-taped black leather sofas. Music ranges from New Order to the Blur and everything in between (except on Sundays). Try the Loft's own concoctions with music-themed names. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The first thing that you will notice about this pub is the loud music and the second would be the smell of beer. You can swing to the beat of the live bands on weeknights, and if you have had a bit too much to drink, you can hang around the pool tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sophisticated and trendy |
221 William St (Northbridge) Perth, WA 6003 Australia +61 (0)8 9227 6771 http://www.universalbar.com.au |
This is a popular hangout for jazz lovers and beautiful people. What seems spacious by day becomes congested by night, as live blues and jazz artists take to the tiny stage. The intimate ambiance suits the mood as the night progresses and the crowd moves in. The food menu offers snacking and finger foods (AUD4-AUD14.50) and the usual range of alcohol and soft drinks. Try a cocktail, which will set you back around AUD10, but it is worth it just for the decoration. Review © 2007, Wcities |
