Pyrotechnic brilliance |
Forrest Dr and Fraser Ave (Kings Park) Perth, WA 6000 Australia +1 300 36 1351 |
Perth throws a major celebration on Australia Day and practically the whole city shows up for the fun. The excitement starts early with activities on the Perth foreshore. Water displays take place on the Swan River and a mid-afternoon air show draws huge crowds. An excellent line-up of local acts perform at the Esplanade park in the city, starting with the Survival concert in recognition of Indigenous Australia. However, the true event happens when the sun goes down...fireworks. Central Perth overflows with people as they vie for the best spots to watch. While the city offers an exhilarating atmosphere, there are also a number of excellent vantage points along the river. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great local celebration |
Grand Boulevard Joondalup Perth, WA 6127 Australia +61 (0)8 9400 4992 http://festival.joondalup.wa.g... |
This local festival presents two days of street entertainment and a night parade. It is relatively new to the festival scene yet exudes a well-worn and vibrant character. Buskers, street theatre, BMX and skating displays, and a dance program entertain the crowds. Also, a main stage features well-known acts, such as Marcia Hines and the Perth Jazz Orchestra. A weekend event: if you can only make one day try for the Saturday so you do not miss the night parade at 7p. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ideal concert outing |
Stevens Rd Perth, WA 6285 Australia +61 (0)8 9430 4099 http://www.leeuwinestate.com.au |
If you need an excuse to hit the road and see the countryside, then this concert series offers a good reason to get out of town. It takes place in a vineyard setting at the Leeuwin Estate. Since the inaugural 1984 concert, the event has been attracting top international acts including Roberta Flack, Michael Crawford and native son, John Farnham. Plus, it seems like just about everybody on the continent shows up so tickets go fast. In 1993, another concert was added to showcase Australian talent. It is the perfect draw for families and a great time to have a picnic (bring your own or pre-order a Leeuwin hamper). Admission: Leeuwin Estate Concert AUD105 (via mailing list); Australian Family Concert AUD10-AUD25. Review © 2007, Wcities |

'Celestial City' (Perth Cultural Centre) in Northbridge acts as the central point for many of the celebrations. The club of choice, the Watershed, presents blues, deep dub and trip hop, and Latino acts. Festival highlights include a major outback installation by international artist Antony Gormley and the Fremantle International Jazz Festival. Admission varies by event. Review © 2007, Wcities |
