City Beach

Sweeping unspoilt beaches
City Beach
Perth, WA 6015
Australia
+61 8 9483 1111
Swim, sun-bake and saunter along one of Perth's busiest beaches. City Beach is only a 15-minute drive from central Perth, thus is popular with inner city dwellers. This is an unspoilt stretch of beach protected by sand dunes and a buffer zone park that separate it from the West Coast Highway and residential areas. The Coastal Walk and Cycle Way start here and run all the way north to Hillarys Boat Harbour. In addition, the Scenic Coastal Route begins here and follows the coast north. Amenities include picnic areas, toilets and showers.

East Perth Cemetery

Telling pioneer tales
Bronte Street
Perth, WA 6005
Australia
+61 8 9321 6088
http://www.ntwa.com.au/places/...
Visit this historic cemetery for a fascinating insight in the original Swan River Colony. Dating back to 1829, there are less than 800 graves and family vaults remaining but each tells a tale of the pioneer experience. The artistic style of the tombstones reflects the early colonial era and the last burial was in 1919 although the family vaults remain in use to this day. The tranquil grounds are home to a gothic style chapel, Saint Bartholomew's, built in 1871. Admission: adults AUD4, children and concession AUD2, and group bookings can be done for AUD2. Free for members.

Encounter birds and other native fauna while walking through the vibrant Herdsman Lake Regional Park. The wildlife centre, opened in 1984, is the main building in the park and has a wonderful mezzanine viewing level with binoculars. Opportunities abound to spot a variety of native and exotic birds. The centre also has a series of aquariums with a range of reptiles and other creepy crawlies plus an excellent educational natural history section. This park has some fantastic walkways and there are some superb picnic spots.

Port Beach Road
North Fremantle
Perth, WA 6159
Australia
+61 8 9431 7878 (Tourist Information)
This is surfer territory year round. It is not often that you will drive along Port Beach Road without spotting a wet suited body in the swell. An artificial reef was constructed off shore to ensure good waves on a regular basis. This is a great swimming, surfing and body surfing beach with rolling sand dunes and a stretch of cliffs that create a wind-swept sense of isolation. There are beach entry points, car parks, and observation spots with shaded picnic tables dotted along the coastal road.

The Newport offers a great venue to enjoy a drink and catch up with friends. By day it plays host to a handful of devoted beer drinkers, but at night this place really comes alive. There are two bar areas and a beer garden. The front bar features pool tables, pinball machines, Daytona and Virtual Cop. DJ's Jong and Jason mix Fremantle's best dance on Friday and Saturday nights. Live music is also a regular feature at the Newport, particularly local alternative music. Spirits and beers, including the usual range of Emu bitter, Emu draught and Swan gold.

Australia

Only 25 minutes by ferry from the mainland, enjoy this aquatic paradise. Rottnest Island, 11 kilometres long and almost five kilometres wide, boasts numerous fantastic beaches. Enjoy leisure activities galore. Bicycles, the main source of transport, can be hired at Thomson Bay. The amazing array of marine life living in the coral reefs (that fringe the island) ensure superb snorkelling and scuba diving. The island also proves very popular with city surfers short on good surf. Beware - the flora and fauna is protected, including the cute quokkas (native marsupials like mini-kanagroos).

Western Australia's Millennium Project - the Swan Bells Belltower - sits in Barrack Square on the edge of the Swan river. In 1988, the twelve bells of St Martin-in-the Fields were presented to the state as part of a program commemorating the Australian Bicentennial. Along with the six new bells, the tower boasts the largest set of change ringing bells in the world. The tower, a contemporary design, is particularly striking. The tower also features a wishing wheel and art work by artists and community groups.
