Steeped in American myth, the cobble-stoned streets of old Germantown echo with the ghostly footsteps of its colonial past. During the Revolutionary War the streets of Germantown were turned into a battlefield. Later, it was the site of Washington's first capital in 1793. The Upper Cemetery is one of the country's oldest burial grounds, dating from 1692. Here lies "America's Methuselah", Adam Shisler, whose grave mistakenly reads "Age 969 Years." Germantown is a thriving pocket of American history that deserves a visit by anyone fascinated by the early origins of the country. Review © 2009, Wcities |
