If you can't afford a trip to Cuba, walk into this restaurant instead - from the menu to the decor, all offer flavors of Cuba. Also make sure you walk in with an appetite. The forerunner of this restaurant is Chef Douglas Rodriguez, labeled by People magazine as, "... Superchef Makes Latin Food Haute Haute Haute". Along with a wide range of tempting appetizers like Smoked Marlin (rum-cured and served in malanga boats with pickled jalapenos), the menu features Ceviche. Entrees include Vaca Frita 'Fried Cow', Chilean Sea Bass and many more interesting dishes. Dig into the award-winning Chocolate Cigar or the Chocolate Flan, which is served with caramelized bananas. The extensive wine list adds to the dining experience.

Chef Jose Garces had come a long way since his graduation from culinary school. The Latin cuisines he dabbles in draw inspiration from Flamenco. The eatery pays respect to this iconic Spanish tradition by organizing live music and dances once every week on the premises. The name of this restaurant means 'loved one' in Spanish and a lot of regulars will willingly vouch for it. Book in advance if you are interested in hosting a party or if you want to try the suckling pig.

Tiny Thai place

Philadelphia, PA 19103
United States
+1 215 564 6976
There are exactly 28 seats in this little Thai restaurant. A small, modest place with excellent food, Amara has been a quiet presence in this part of town for a few years now. Its modesty can lead to it being overlooked, which would be unfortunate. The Pad Thai (USD12.95) is pleasing, the roast duck (USD14.95) crisp, and there are 11 homemade sauces available, if you want to do your own experiments. Amara sets out to be a quiet place for a pleasant meal in the neighborhood, and it succeeds.

Some come to sample the Crab stuffed ravioli, spicy buffalo shrimp, swordfish steaks, surf and turf, or Chilean sea bass, but most come for the pastas and raw bar. Service tends to be very friendly.

+1 215 731 1222
A small open-air French café in downtown Philadelphia? Yes. Good luck getting a seat. The menu is generally Mediterranean: hummus, olives, several choices for meat and fish, and a long list of focaccia variations. The decor is minimalist: bare white walls, stainless steel ducts, and cool green window frames. The windows are the dominant feature here. In summer, they're wide open, and a cool breeze carries the flavors from one small table to the next. Sitting here is so pleasant, it's a great place for people-watching.

When a restaurant is termed Luxury boutique Steakhouse, you may wonder what luxury would have to do with steak but this is another such restaurant, so go with the flow. Barclay Prime's décor is more on the side of a mature uptown eatery with marble tables, comfortable plush sofas and walls lined with walnut bookcases. Order from the special menu, which consists of Kobe Sliders, Tuna and beef Tartare and the famous Philly Cheese steak. From the a la carte menu, take your pick from the Oyster Rockefeller, 12-ounce filet Porterhouses and the dangerously delicious sounding butter poached-lobster.

The Bayou seems to be more of a gutted townhouse than a tavern. The first floor ceiling, covered by pinned-up dollar bills, hovers over the 40-foot bar as barkeeps distribute their potables. Upstairs, a smaller bar room also purveys drinks at reasonable prices. Beer, wine and spirits are served with appetizers, sandwiches and munchies. Yuengling bottles (a popular local beer) are a good bargain. In season, they have a special on Maryland crabs by the dozen.

This popular watering hole offers so many bottled beer selections that every visit feels like an international beer festival. Management prides itself on its eclectic beer menu that features such obscure selections as Roquefort10, Black Dog Honey Raspberry, Bolton German Ale, La Fin de Monde and Maudite to name a few. Oddly enough there are no no beers on tap. It serves a light kitchen menu including 15-cent wings after 4pm on Tuesdays. Live jazz can be heard every Wednesday.

Fogo de Chão is part of a chain, but you would never know it by the upscale menu and impeccable service. Meals at this Brazilian steakhouse begin with a trip to the sprawling buffet, during which waiters usher dishes of hot polenta and chewy cheese bread to your table. Then as soon as you say "Go" (using red and green cards) chefs known as "gauchos" begin serving hand carved meats to your table. Filet mignon, ribeye, pork, and more are all equally delicious and perfectly seasoned. Try a little of everything, or focus on one selection – just remember to save room for the fried banana dessert! -Katie O'Connor

It has been said that the owner consulted a Feng Shui expert when designing the harmoniously arranged interior of this restaurant. In the belief that superior food must be balanced by not only quality service but an equally balanced environment, there is an intriguing, moody, film-noir quality to the space. The menu has a way of appealing to the senses in a sort of subliminal way, combining an otherwise common ingredient with a surprising twist. See website for full menus and more. Note the extensive lists of both wine and imported and microbrewed beers.

Geno's Steaks has been a key member of the famous Philadelphia Cheesesteak triad (Geno's, Pat's, Jim's) for as long as memory serves. A typical topic of conversation among Philadelphians is which one of these masters of the rib eye reigns supreme. Some say Geno's sandwiches are bigger but Pat's are better. Truth be told, any of the three do justice to the city's signature sandwich. Located across from arch-nemesis Pat's in South Philadelphia near the Italian Market. Outside seating only.

Giwa

Korean Fast Food
1608 Sansom St
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103
United States

The Korean fast food restaurant Giwa is a great place to have quick lunch or dinner at a reasonable price. Perhaps the best-known dish on the menu is their selection of bibimpab, vegetables mixed with rice and hot pepper sauce and topped with a cooked egg. Their numberous varieties of bibimpab is served in a hot iron bowl which literally fries the rice as you eat it. Another favorite is bulgogi- marinated beef served with rice. Giwa is centrally located in the heart of center city making it convenient and easy to locate. - Cedric Dickson

Add a personal touch to your next business dinner or impress your friends or a date at this intimate Italian restaurant. Beautiful paintings adorn the walls of this quaint BYOB with a cozy, but spacious, dining room. Don't be surprised if a staff member performs an Italian opera classic for special guests or a special occasion, in a seemingly spontaneous manner. Start with an antipasti, mussels or octopus. Though there are poultry and seafood entrees, you should definitely try Gnocchi's home made pasta.

Good Dog's tag-line of "Come. Sit. Stay." proves no problem for visitors looking for a taste of Philly nightlife without a lot of hype. This casual pub excels in both simple fare and bar service. They may not promote choco-cherry-martinis, but their long list of beers is sure to satiate any thirst. If you want to add some spice to your night, all you have to do is try their Jerk Chicken Empanadas. Just make sure you don't tell the waiter to "fetch." -Katie O'Connor

Add in white-tuxedoed bartenders and waiters and one almost feels like being on the set for Casablanca. Though the bar is small, its wine cellar is amazingly vast. During the day the bar menu includes caviar, hinting that this is not your average watering hole. Those hungry for dinner can enjoy everything from Black Angus beef to smoked salmon.
