Cantina El Caballito

Ola Mexicana!
1651 East Passyunk Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19148
United States
+1 215 755 3550
This low-key hangout doesn't attract much attention, and that's probably because of its out-of-the-way location. Once you venture here, however, it is another story altogether. The cantina dishes out raving Mexican fare (enchiladas, tacos et al), draught beers, margaritas, sangria, tequila—name anything Mexican, and most likely they'll have it!

Lolita

Fine Mexican Cuisine, Casual Atmosphere
106 South 13th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
United States
+1 215 546 7100
http://www.lolitabyob.com
Lolita calls itself "BYOT" - Bring Your Own Tequila. The sophisticated Mexican food available here offers a variety suited to most any palate, in an environment that is pleasantly laid back. The menu features many Mayan-inspired dishes with an international twist, such as the borrega, borrega, a grilled ginger lamb loin served with a huitlacoche tamal and portabello-shiitake escabeche. And don't let the "BYOT" motto fool you - the selection of margaritas - served by the pitcher - is not to be missed.

Los Catrines & Tequila's Bar

Warm atmosphere, not hot tamales
1602 Locust St
Philadelphia, PA 19103
United States
+1 215 546 0181
http://www.tequilasphilly.com/
There aren't many Mexican restaurants in town, but even if there were, this would still stand out as one of the best. The menu tends towards more subtle flavors, such as Chicken Molé slow cooked, a rich mild flavor. The margaritas are made with fresh juices, the music is the right volume for conversation, and the high ceilings are painted in warm amber shades and softly lit, but not too dark to see the menu.

This makes a delightful change of pace from the traditional local diet of hoagies and cheesesteaks. Santa Fe serves standard, vegetarian and specialty burritos. Selections include health-conscious choices like the Faux Beef: beef-flavored soy product with two types of beans, low-fat cheese, and salsa. Meat lovers, do not fear, all items are available with the real thing. Other entrées include original combinations of shrimp, cheeses, guacamole and chili peppers.

Vez

Get silly this side of Philly
121 South 13th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107
United States
+1 215 928 9800
El Vez is a delightfully satisfying restaurant in terms of food and service. The 'first come first serve' policy prevails as you wait for your table at the round bar. The pico de gallo, enchiladas, duck confit flautas, mahi mahi are no-nonsense, tasty bites. It is a bustling place with young 'uns, loud music and navels a plenty. This casual eatery can help you unwind or give you a headache. You have to try it though to see what happens.

Xochitl

Hip Mexican Cuisine
408 South Second Street
Philadelphia, PA 19147
United States
+1 215 238 7280
http://www.xochitlphilly.com
Xochitl (pronounced "so-cheet") serves up a modern take on authentic Mexican cuisine, and a great variety of mixed drinks to go along. Seating is prompt and spacious in a warmly decorated hall, and the servers are knowledgeable and friendly - they'll make guacamole for you at the table to go with fresh tortilla chips. Try one of their tempting seafood dishes, such as their Vuelve a la Vida ("Return to Life"), a shrimp, octopus, and oyster cocktail served with jalapeños, tomatoes, and avocado. Or go for one of their hot dishes like the Pechuga de Pollo Rellena, a sesame-crusted chicken breast smothered in pepper sauce and served with fresh tortillas. The Xochitl lounge is a good option as well, with comfortable couches and a long bar.
