South Street's current reputation as Philadelphia's progressive center dates back to the neighborhood's earliest days as a meeting and marketplace for people wishing to better themselves in the new world while worshipping as they pleased. The modern day South Street began to take shape in the 1960s when the area became home to a growing number of hippies and counter-culture advocates. While a bit more settled today, the area still boasts some of the Philly's most eclectic shops and hippest bars and clubs. Review © 2009, Wcities |
