Downtown Phoenix, over the past decade, has undergone development to reinvigorate the area. Scores of new shops and restaurants have since opened, and performing arts venues have also sprung up. The downtown area is also an important business, financial and government district. Scottsdale Road is known to locals as 'Resort Row' due to the prominence of extravagant hotels. The area's reputation for accommodating affluent tourists is confirmed by the repertoire of golf courses and sleek boutiques that are scattered across this district, built in the nineteenth century.
