If you are walking past Pioneer Courthouse with children in tow, they'll make sure you stop and admire the little bronze animals that play in small fountains along Yamhill. Artist Georgia Gerber created the little menagerie in 1986 and it includes eternally paddling ducks, upright otters that can't seem to believe what they see when they look at you and a wonderful Mama bear fishing in the fountain for her two playful cubs. It is a real smile-inducer and a favorite among the locals.

This 120-acre sanctuary should not be missed by nature lovers—it is a nice place for walkers, bird watchers and family excursions. The wildlife exhibit is home to a number of wild birds and other animals. The facilities help rehabilitate and take care of more than 3,000 animals per year. The bookstore has plenty of educational works, many of which include fantastic illustrations. There is no admission charge. Get good directions—some of the roads in the area can be confusing.

One of Oregon's most popular coastal destinations, this little village blends nature, art and style with an East Coast feel. The town's silver strand and strict construction codes make for a perfect nest in the northwest rainforest. Stroll South Hemlock Street where you can take in the many shops, galleries and restaurants that crowd the main drag. Do not miss Haystack Rock. Entirely protected, the monolith towers more than 235 feet.

Resembling a community garden you would find in Suzhou, Portland's sister city, is a beautiful green space near the bank of the Willamette River. The Lovejoy Bridge, joining the Northeast part of town with the Northwest, is gone, but the replacement (complete with pathways, plant displays, a teahouse and store) is a welcome addition. Admission is USD7 for adults,USD6 for seniors, and USD5.50 for students. Children 5 and under are free.

Known as the highest point in the city, this spot is where Native Americans once held council. It affords incredible views of the local mountains, the coastal range and, of course, the city. At the top of the hill, park your car and check out the educational plaques in the viewing area. This breathtaking spot showcases Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Make sure it is a clear day when you visit; a gray day means you will be in the clouds.

This church's congregation was first formed by a group of 10 immigrants in the mid-1850s, and the current building was erected in 1887. The church is devoted to reaching out to and bettering the community through volunteering, providing child care and helping the homeless. This is just part of its extensive mission statement, which also includes fellowship in God's name. The magnificent church is also memorable because of its enormous steeple and historical appeal.

Crowning the northern view of the city, this double-decker for the 405 freeway is Bridgetown's newest. Completed in 1973, the 902-foot, tied-arch bridge weighs 6,000 tons. The span was pre-fabricated and floated downriver to the spot it now rests. There is not foot traffic on this commuter bridge, so take in its beauty from any nearby spot. Or, drive across and enjoy the urban panorama. Just keep in mind northbound traffic can get pretty tied up in the afternoon.

Portland, OR 97204
United States
+1 503 275 8355 / +1 877 678 5263 (Portland Oregon Visitors Association)
Completed in 1910, the Hawthorne is one of the world's oldest operating lift bridges. It is also raised more often than any other in town, because it is merely 53 feet above the water. The crossing also carries the most cycle and foot traffic. In 1998, the artery was closed for extensive restoration. Many repairs and improvements were made, including widening the sidewalks to accommodate the heavy usage. While taking a trip across the span, cross your fingers that a ship will pass below.

Hip hippy hangout
Hawthorne Boulevard

Portland, OR 97214

+1 503 222 2223 (Portland Oregon Visitors Association)
Twenty-first century hippies constitute most of the population in this popular southeast neighborhood. Colorful boutiques, bookshops and eateries saturate the district. You will be hard-pressed to find an establishment here that is duplicated anywhere else. This is the counterpart to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. It is a fun place to spend the afternoon, even if you never followed the Grateful Dead. Credit card acceptance varies by shop.

This is Hollywood, revisited. OK, maybe not the California version, but Portland's own little corner of the Hollywood District. The surreal exterior of this fine movie house, which bears a strong resemblance to a Walt Disney castle, makes it worth a visit. The recently renovated theater boasts a lavish decor, cheap admission to second-run films, cushy seats and all the snacks you can inhale. Enjoy an afternoon or evening of pure childlike entertainment. General seating: USD6 for adults, USD4 for seniors and children under 12.

Find clean, comfortable cars, cheap fares and Fareless Square inside downtown's free zone between Northwest Irving Street, Willamette River and Interstate Highway 405. The honor system comes with routine checks, so get a ticket. Hop on and travel from one end of the city to another, over one of the bridges or just a few blocks—it is a great ride. Fares are good on all Tri-Met routes.

This is without a doubt Portland's showcase event. With more than 70 happenings, the festival always takes place in June as the roses kick into full bloom. The Grand Floral Parade is the second-largest floral parade in the country. The Junior Parade is the oldest and largest children's parade. The city's bridges and people come to life with events on the water, an arts festival, fair-rides and fireworks. The city will be busy, so make your hotel reservations early.

Union Station

Historic and still working
800 Northwest Sixth Avenue
Portland, OR 97209

Fans of romance have to visit this working railway station and work of art. Look for the landmark clock tower peeking out from the silhouettes of the northern bridges and follow it to the brick station that fairly oozes history. The historic station still handles train traffic as a main terminal of the Pacific Northwest.

This open green space may be the best evidence that Portland has more park space for its residents than any other U.S. city. The park has a number of notable attractions, including the International Rose Test Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, Japanese Gardens and the Oregon Zoo. Plenty of different spots offer sun, shade, and shelter from the rain and views of the city. There is no charge for the rose garden or the arboretum.

Officially named Tom McCall Waterfront Park, but known to Oregonians as just Waterfront Park, this is often the center of activity in Portland. Festivals, parades, performers and more make it truly a taste of Rip City. Walk along the Willamette River at lunch and you are sure to brush shoulders with the city's workers. There is always something interesting to see here at Portland's answer to Venice Beach in California. There are basketball courts and lots of open, green space along the west bank of the Willamette River.
