Soaring Stones

Floating boulders at Pioneer Place
Southwest Fifth Avenue and Yamhill Street
Portland, OR 97204
+1 503 222 2223 +1 877 678 5263
This completely stationary series of sculptures gives the impression of perpetual motion, as if a good-sized boulder were flying from ten feet up in the air to the ground repeatedly. Created in 1990 by Seattle artist John T. Young, each of the boulders is perched atop graduating, mirror finished steel pedestals to give the impression that the stones are crashing toward the sidewalk. If you stand under one of the taller ones, you can't help but feel the need to duck. A fun piece of art right in front of Saks Fifth Avenue on the Fifth Avenue side.
