This 120-acre sanctuary should not be missed by nature lovers—it is a nice place for walkers, bird watchers and family excursions. The wildlife exhibit is home to a number of wild birds and other animals. The facilities help rehabilitate and take care of more than 3,000 animals per year. The bookstore has plenty of educational works, many of which include fantastic illustrations. There is no admission charge. Get good directions—some of the roads in the area can be confusing.

The Lovejoy Bridge, joining the Northeast part of town with the Northwest, is gone, but the replacement (complete with pathways, plant displays, a teahouse and store) is a welcome addition. Admission is USD7 for adults,USD6 for seniors, and USD5.50 for students. Children 5 and under are free.

Located at the Hotel deLuxe—The Driftwood Room is a fun place to visit with a few close friends. The service here is excellent and the staff is a friendly bunch of people. Sample the many cocktail mixes at this small and cozy bar. The Driftwood Room is open to hotel guests and local folks as well. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is laid back.

Elk Rock

Garden for the Bishop
11800 Southwest Military Lane
(east of State Highway 43)
Portland, OR 97204
United States
This little-known estate and grounds are landscaped like a French palace. Called The Garden of the Bishop's Close, it was given to the Episcopal Diocese of Portland by the Kerr family in 1957. Different plant varieties are labeled, making it an educational tour of Northwest plant life. No matter what the season, this is always a great place to visit. A winding, somewhat hilly pathway can get steep, so you may want to stick to the flatland. No bicycles, picnics, food or drinks are allowed, but admission is free.

+1 503-239-7639
http://www.holocene.org/
In a town that is sadly lacking in good dance clubs, Holocene stands out at a place that welcomes just about anyone who wants to shake their thing on the dance floor. Known for mixing very good cocktails, it's always best to order your second one while still working on the first. The vast space is broken up in to rooms and sunken areas. Most nights have a theme, so it's always good to check first. Bands tend to be eclectic or experimental, whereas Djs crank out dance beats most nights. This is a good place to see and be seen. -Marie Richie

Macleay Trailhead

Lush and peaceful
Northwest Thurman Street
(in Forest Park)
Portland, OR 97210
United States
+1 503 823 2223
http://www.portlandparks.org/P...
This is just one of the 50 miles of trails in Forest Park. Home to wildflowers and 100 species of birds, it begins at the end of Northwest Thurman Street. Hikers amble past Portland's original watershed and an old stone house, part of the Balch family homestead, located about three-fourths of a mile in. The path splits here, and visitors with mobility issues will want to continue along the lower trail to the road (another quarter-mile or so), and others may take the switchback to the Wildwood Trail.

Since she blew her top in 1980, Mount St. Helens has been one of the world's most popular tourist attractions. It became even more so when it recently began to spew ash again. The mountain itself is quite visible from Portland, but the visitor's center is two and one-half hours away by vehicle. Once there, you can walk through a replica of the volcano, learn about the mountain's history and pick up directions to Johnson Ridge Observatory where you can peer into the crater. Admission: USD3 for adults; USD1 for children 15 years and under.

Officers Row National Historic District

History on the street
One street north of East Evergreen Boulevard
Portland, WA 98661
United States
+1 360 694 2588 (Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce)
Twenty-one historic homes line this old street where the officers of the Vancouver Barracks were stationed. Three of the most prominent are the Ulysses S. Grant House (1849), General O. O. Howard House (1879) and George C. Marshall House (1886). Presidents and generals walked this historic drive—markers tell the story. The Howard House is also home to the Vancouver Visitors Center. In 1980, the City of Vancouver bought this neighborhood for $1, then spent eight years and $11 million restoring the neighborhood to its original state.

Built in the 1860s, this courthouse was the first on the West Coast and was Portland's first restoration project. It is still a federal building for the United States Court of Appeals and the U.S. Post Office. You can climb a stairway up to the cupola and get a view of downtown and Pioneer Courthouse Square —;you will almost always have the lookout to yourself, since most people do not know the building is open to the public for free.

Tickets for games against Los Angeles or Utah are coveted by locals. Almost all of the nearly 20,000 seats in the Rose Garden (at the Rose Quarter) provide a good view. NBA season is from October through April. Game times vary and tickets start at USD15.

This open green space may be the best evidence that Portland has more park space for its residents than any other U.S. city. The park has a number of notable attractions, including the International Rose Test Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, Japanese Gardens and the Oregon Zoo. Plenty of different spots offer sun, shade, and shelter from the rain and views of the city. There is no charge for the rose garden or the arboretum.

Waterfront Park

Officially named Tom McCall Waterfront Park, but known to Oregonians as just Waterfront Park, this is often the center of activity in Portland. Festivals, parades, performers and more make it truly a taste of Rip City. Walk along the Willamette River at lunch and you are sure to brush shoulders with the city's workers. There is always something interesting to see here at Portland's answer to Venice Beach in California. There are basketball courts and lots of open, green space along the west bank of the Willamette River.
