1201 Southwest 12th Avenue Portland, OR 97205 United States +1 503 225 1201 http://home.europa.com/~1201ca... bukouski@aol.com |
This dinosaur of the old Portland bar scene has evolved into a dance place for a young crowd. The live music has been replaced with DJs, and the pool table has been sacrificed for dancing. An emphasis on funk came with the latest remodel of the club, a former strip joint. Sundays are popular, featuring a three-DJ jam. In addition to beers and drinks, food items are available. Happy Hour is 3p-6p M-F. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This cool Mexican cafe and bar is popular with locals. The food is tasty, the beer choices are numerous and it is the only full bar in the area. An enchilada/tamale combo plate with rice and beans is plenty of food. Thirsty patrons will appreciate the selection of beers in the bottle and on tap. Drink specials offer serious discounts. Besaw's |
2301 Northwest Savier St. Portland, OR 97210 United States +1 503 228 2619 http://www.besaws.com/ contact@besaws.com |
This little Northwest eatery actually started out as a beer parlor. In 1903, Henry Weinhard made an investment in establishing this place. In 1916, when alcohol became illegal in Oregon, the parlor stopped filling steins and started serving up food. The restaurant also was the first in Oregon to hold an alcohol license after the prohibition. Start your day with Cousin Maurice's Eggs, scrambled with brie cheese, tomatoes and scallions. Settle in for some great foods at this restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Review © 2007, Wcities |

722 East Burnside Street Avenue Portland, OR 97214 United States +1 503 233 7855 http://www.outlawsbar.com/ outlawsbar@outlawsbar.com |
Don your dancing shoes and take a trip back to when big bands ruled the music scene. Red velvet curtains, rich wood grains, and dancers of all ages contribute to the unique atmosphere. Dance to such favorites as swing, salsa, ballroom and tango, usually with at least one live band a week gracing the stage. Attire among the more serious dancers tends to be fairly formal, but dress as you like. Lessons are available during the hour before the main dance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This casual pub has been a long-time fixture of Northwest Portland. The pub is marked by stucco, ivy-dripping walls outside and warm, honey-colored wood and high ceilings inside. Enjoy one of the famous microbrews by the glass or pitcher. Wine is also available. The scrumptious pizza -- available by the slice or pie -- is on the expensive side, but is worth every penny. Select fresh toppings that include whole garlic cloves, feta cheese and pepperoncini. Children are welcome. You may want to tour the adjacent microbrewery, one of Oregon's oldest. Tours are free, as is "Science Pub", a monthly science-themed lecture/discussion series. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inside this downtown pub, you will find pitchers, pints and pizza. It is a tile-floor establishment where the bar extends from the front door to the back exit. Although there is a full bar, the free-flowing beer is best. Enjoy nearly 50 different kinds of brew on tap and in bottles. Perhaps one of the best loved bars in Portland, Crush literally has something for everyone. The space is artfully divided into three rooms, with smoking allowed in the "Vice Room." Cocktails are imaginative and feature liquors you won't find anywhere else in town –several of them homemade. Often called "gay-friendly," this bar is everyone-friendly, with a helpful and knowledgeable staff. Check out the outdoor patio or explore the art-clad interiors. Regulars flock there on Tuesdays to take advantage of the all-day under $5 happy hour menus. Brunch is now served on Sundays along with their usual high-end bar fare. -Marie Richie Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great entertainers such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown and the Grateful Dead have performed in this historic ballroom that is now owned by the McMenamin brothers. This tiered restaurant exudes a fancy aura, but has a comfortable feel and waterfront views. The fine linens and luxuriously upholstered booths lend a romantic feeling, and most diners choose to dress up. The servers are friendly and accommodating. You will find such Pacific Rim favorites as seafood pasta and Northwest salmon. Try a glass of Oregon wine or a cocktail from the full bar. Portland would not be the same without the Heathman Hotel, a downtown landmark. The hotel's restaurant and bar are equally important to Portland's culture. The lounge paintings once owned by Vanderbilt, author-autographed books in the library and Andy Warhol Endangered Species prints boost the decor from upper crust to extraordinary. The dishes weave wonderful local flavors into delightful French creations. Salads are a lunch favorite. Try the Asparagus and Bay shrimp salad, served with lemon aioli. In a town that is sadly lacking in good dance clubs, Holocene stands out at a place that welcomes just about anyone who wants to shake their thing on the dance floor. Known for mixing very good cocktails, it's always best to order your second one while still working on the first. The vast space is broken up in to rooms and sunken areas. Most nights have a theme, so it's always good to check first. Bands tend to be eclectic or experimental, whereas Djs crank out dance beats most nights. This is a good place to see and be seen. -Marie Richie Review © 2007, Wcities |

For more than 100 years, Jake's has been serving favorites like shellfish, steaks and cedar-plank salmon. This Portland landmark, described as a "must visit" by The Oregonian, draws locals as well as tourists. It can get crowded, so get a reservation. One of the oldest bars Portland, the Matador has recently come under new and hip management. Thankfully, the newly spiffed-up interior has had no impact on the drinks, which are still among the strongest in town. Get there before 7p on any day for $2.50 well drinks and $1 PBR pints. While it can be crowded on weekends, check out the pool tables for a single quarter any other time. There is food (by state law), but your bartender knows exactly what you came here for, serving it one glass at a time with a smile and a wink. -Marie Richie Review © 2007, Wcities |

Known mostly for its electronic grooves, this club is the kind of place to dance until dawn. You can really work up a sweat kicking up your heels here. When you have had your fill, cool off pond-side under the stars. Shrouded in the shadow of the Burnside Bridge, the dark, almost grungy atmosphere compliments the Generation X crowd well. Portland underground |
211 Southwest Ankeny Street Portland, OR 97204 United States +1 503 220 4001 |
Mild-mannered Portland was once one of the toughest ports of the Pacific. In the 1890s, it was the shanghaiing - kidnapping a man and selling him into bondage - capital of the world. After passing out at one of the many taverns lining Portland's waterfront, prisoners were held in a series of underground tunnels. This Old Town drinking establishment was built in a remnant of one of those same tunnels. Dark walls add to the underground atmosphere. The well-stocked full bar and its ample kitchen will provide you with everything from a cocktail and Pad Thai to a burger and brew. Review © 2007, Wcities |
