Prague's major Christmas Market is well-known for its massive size and great venue—the impressive Wenceslas Square, which is actually a boulevard. With the gorgeous towering facades of centuries-old buildings as a backdrop and fellow bundled-up walkers to rub shoulders with, this traditional market offers visitors a variety of Czech treats and crafts. Toys, decorations, books, jewelry and more will be on sale and stalls selling hot food and mulled wines are also here. Jan Palach was a young Czech student who killed himself in protest against the 1969 invasion of the Soviets into the Czech Republic. Held up as a national hero who gave his life for his country, Palach is honored on this day every year, when citizens and visitors to the city visit his grave to light candles, bring flowers, and consider the young man's lasting legacy. Karlovy Vary offers a huge selection of international films during nearly two weeks in July each year. A fair sampling of foreign stars, directors, and moguls add a touch of glamor. Founded soon after World War II, Prague Spring quickly established itself as one of the continent's major classical festivals. Whereas Halloween in many countries is celebrated at the end of October, the witching hour for the Czech people is April 30. The festival, which dates back centuries, is a kind of mix between Halloween and May Day and marks the beginning of spring. All over the country, effigies of hags or witches are burnt on pyres and the brave ones try to jump over the flames. In Prague, the best place to see this spectacle is Petrin Hill.
