For almost a decade, Czech musicians and artists have been billed along with those from across Europe and beyond during this annual international festival held from late November until early December. Although originally geared more towards alternative rock, the festival line up has expanded to wider genres of music including jazz and modern classical music. Amateur theatre, exhibitions and film screenings have also been added in the past few years to broaden the festival's appeal. The festival explores peripheral forms of expression which are often overlooked by the mainstream, thereby offering inspiration and providing support for the artists involved. The town is near enough to Prague for visitors to drive or take the bus out in the morning, catch a film or two, and return in the evening. Tickets are inexpensive and highly sought-after. They are sold either at the festival headquarters in the Thermal Hotel or from booths on the main promenade. During the event, obtaining accommodations in Karlovy Vary is next to impossible. Burning of hags and witches |
Throughout the city Prague Czech Republic +420 2 2171 4444 (Tourist Information) |
Whereas Halloween in many countries is celebrated at the end of October, the witching hour for the Czech people is April 30. The festival, which dates back centuries, is a kind of mix between Halloween and May Day and marks the beginning of spring. All over the country, effigies of hags or witches are burnt on pyres and the brave ones try to jump over the flames. In Prague, the best place to see this spectacle is Petrin Hill.
