Prague's major Christmas Market is well-known for its massive size and great venue—the impressive Wenceslas Square, which is actually a boulevard. With the gorgeous towering facades of centuries-old buildings as a backdrop and fellow bundled-up walkers to rub shoulders with, this traditional market offers visitors a variety of Czech treats and crafts. Toys, decorations, books, jewelry and more will be on sale and stalls selling hot food and mulled wines are also here. Jan Palach was a young Czech student who killed himself in protest against the 1969 invasion of the Soviets into the Czech Republic. Held up as a national hero who gave his life for his country, Palach is honored on this day every year, when citizens and visitors to the city visit his grave to light candles, bring flowers, and consider the young man's lasting legacy. On this day each January, many Prague citizens visit the Olsansky Cemetery, or the Memorial to Victims of Communism in Wenceslas Square. No admission fee. Review © 2007, Wcities |

By far the largest and most important human rights film festival, One World, is organised by the People in Need Foundation. Under the auspices of Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech Republic, it features documentary films on human rights. The festival was created to enhance mutual understanding between people of different cultures, to increase awareness about human rights and to promote global responsibility, whilst, at the same time, encouraging dignity and inspiring solidarity. Some 80 films and videos from all over the world are screened, in conjunction with a variety of other events, such as workshops, photo exhibitions, concerts and debates, and an international competition of documentary films and videos. Since 1992, the Stone Bell Series Opera Gala has been organising the most exclusive opera recitals featuring famous opera arias and duets by not only Czech, but also international composers. More than 60 different concerts are organised each year and opera lovers from all over Prague come here to enjoy the performances by outstanding singers of international standard. Australian soprano Elizabeth Whitehouse and Czech tenor Jan Vacik, among others, have performed selections of arias from operas such as La Traviata, The Magic Flute and Madame Butterfly.
