Excellent value for money |
Na Strzi 5/343 Prague 14000 Czech Republic +420 2 4244 2599 http://www.pizzeriealdo.cz/ |
One of the better Czech-owned Italian joints in the city, Aldo specializes in pizzas. A wide selection of well-prepared pasta dishes, soups and salads round out the offering. But if visitors make the trip out from the center, a tasty, red sauce pie should be first on their minds. Service is far above the local norm, reflecting the friendly, neighborhood atmosphere, and a good selection of Czech and Italian wines and Czech beers are served. Simply decorated, family photos hang on the walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Am-Mex cooking with Czech touch |
Anny Letenske 16/916 Prague 12000 Czech Republic +420 2 2225 0594 |
Teli Sevalis would be proud to dine at Amigos (formerly Kojak's), hiding unassumingly on a corner in the charming Vinohrady neighborhood. The down-to-earth joint specializing in Am-Mex cooking has a living room feel, perfect for unwinding after a long day—detective or otherwise. The telephone book sized menu in both English and Czech spans the world of American cooking with steaks and baked potatoes along with a clever twist to Czech cuisine. The huge Tex-Mex selection of burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas or chimichangas hint that someone in the kitchen has spent time Stateside. Try the excellent Black Bean Soup as a starter before digging in to entrees. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in the heart of old Prague, Arzenal is a design salon that offers Thai gourmet cuisine in addition to colorful glassware, cutlery, furniture, and accessories exclusively created by prominent Czech architect Borek Šípek. Czech-Mex and Spanish influences |
Ujezd 66 Prague 15000 Czech Republic +420 2 5723 7389 http://www.azteca.cz/ |
Azteca is considered the Speedy Gonzalez of 'Czech-Mex', offering a strange blend of anything spicy, from anywhere south of the Czech Republic. A vast salad menu is the perfect set up for a wide range of sizzling fajitas, quesidillas, burritos, tacos and enchilladas. These are all brought to life with one of the best attempts at real salsa the city has to offer. As well as the Czech-Mex mixing and matching of styles, a Spanish influence has found its way onto the menu as the place offers chop-licking tapas, Andulusian mushrooms and gazpacho. The tequila menu is the biggest in the country with everything from Pepe Lopez to Tenoch. The eclectic décor ranges from Mexican sombreros on the walls and Guatemalan carpets on the floor to Brazilian coffee bean bags hugging the ceilings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crepes by Kampa |
Všehrdova 17 Újezd Prague 11800 Czech Republic +420 2 5731 2246 http://www.bar-bar.cz/ |
This longtime favorite next to Kampa Park is popular for its cheap and filling dinner crêpes. There's also a selection of large and small salads and grilled meats. Satisfy your sugar cravings with one or more of the lighter, less expensive desert creêpes. Even when full, (which is often), the setting is usually mellow enough to carry on a conversation over a drink or two and it's also a popular spot in the afternoon for parents and their kids. Located at Mandarin Oriental, it offers more than just a list of impressive cocktails. A very few bars flaunt a menu as extensive as this. Be it cocktails, vodka, whiskey or beer, Barego doesn't let anyone down. This bar has a special pre and post dinner menu to choose from. Moreover, it also serves interesting concoctions as well as light snacks, arrangements for which are made for limited hours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizza Native American style |
Belehradská 4 Nusle Prague 14000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 4174 1580 / +420 (0)2 6121 5622 http://www.baretta.cz/ |
Basing their take on pizza on an old tale of an Italian who went to America during the 16th century to discover the pleasures of the famed red sauce pie among Native Americans, this easy—going joint exudes a relaxed, no-worries sentiment within the tomahawks, bison heads and other Native American décor which gives this place its off-beat character—regardless of the accuracy of their pizza history. Inexpensive pizzas are served up Czech style—no mozzarella but edam cheese—along with a wide array of pastas and salads. The place feels a bit like a college hang-out considering the low-prices and mostly young clientele. The delivery traffic keeps the place humming. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is one of the very few officially designated mullet-free zones in the city. The uber-chic café/restaurant features an extensive cocktail list. Tex-Mex off the tourist trail |
Krymska 2 Prague 10100 Czech Republic +420 2 7174 0599 http://www.barracuda-cafe.cz/ |
This romantic, candlelit cellar space hides behind a simple almost drab façade on a non-descript street outside the main center. Once inside, however, the brightly painted walls and ornate decorations create a pleasant environment for sampling Tex-Mex treats with a Czech twist. The place feels more like a restaurant than a café and its reasonably-priced menu ranges from standard Tex-Mex fare of spicy soups and salads to burritos (chicken, beef or vegetarian) to Pollo (chicken). Mexican beers and alcohol are also served. Frequented by locals which range from hip young professionals to older business types to couples of all ages, this is a well-kept secret off the normal tourist trail. Service is prompt and friendly and the staff speaks English. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cheerful post-theatre option |
Masarykovo Nabrezi 38 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 29 3008 |
This long-time local favorite located directly behind the renowned National Theatre is an inexpensive pre or post-theatre choice. Most entrees are under EUR5 and includes the Prague Shark with Wine Sauce. Seven types of beefsteak come in a bit more expensively and - word to the wise - better to save these for after the show. It has a chummy neighborhood atmosphere and it's not at all surprising to see local theatre dignitaries hanging out here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First of its kind |
Ujezd 16 Prague 11800 Czech Republic +420 2 5731 0694 http://www.bohemiabagel.cz/ |
Bohemia Bagel is Prague's first bagel bakery. Hand-rolled and baked on the premises, the bagels come in a huge variety of flavors from poppy and sesame to sun-dried tomato and basil. Top any one of these with one of their five cream cheeses (the honey, walnut and raisin is a local favorite). If you want something more filling, try any one of a number of fresh sandwiches like Turkey Club, Marinated Chicken Breast, Int'l Rueben to name but a few. They also serve fresh quiche, soups and salads daily. For dessert, dive into moist, homemade brownies or a chocolate/espresso cheese cake. A gourmet coffee should nicely top it all off. The staff here are primarily Czech, but the clientele sometimes seems to be predominantly made up of ex-pats and lost-looking American backpackers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Western European café atmosphere |
Štepánská 32 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2223 1065 |
This is a cheerful place which offers pleasant service and which is reminiscent of the type of café frequently found in France or Switzerland. The clientele ranges from buisnesspeople during the day to theatre-goers at night. It is more of a café than bar—despite the name—and both the coffees and the prices are excellent. The Italian-style sandwiches and large salads are very tasty and form the backbone of the menu. Rarely seen sweets such as muffins add a tasty twist. The daily pasta special is a reliable choice. Art nouveau jewel |
Vaclavske Namesti 25 Hotel Europa Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 (0)224 215 387 http://www.evropahotel.cz |
A palpable sense of sophisticated refinement oozes from every mirrored corner of this famous art nouveau café. The hotel was rebuilt around 1905 in the voluptuous style of the day: all swirling, anthropomorphic forms, mirrors and gilt. A central ellipse reveals an upper gallery, which is only open at breakfast time to hotel guests. Not surprisingly considering the location, prices are on the high side, with even coffees and desserts coming heavy on your wallet. However, by all means stick your head in for a look around. A cover charge may be levied for the live music that can be heard every afternoon and evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Service is not the reason to come to this beautiful Art Nouveau cafe in the center of Prague. You may well have a good twenty minutes to study the stunning tile mosaics adorning the walls after wiping off your own table. However, the place is always packed because the coffees are good, the food reasonably priced and the atmosphere lively. Traditional Czech and continental cuisine are on the menu for lunch and dinner, and includes generous salads and some vegetarian dishes which are occasionally not available. Live jazz and swing are offered 4 nights a week, lending the cafe an air of authenticity. Be sure to check your bill before paying, as the waiters have a reputation for taking advantage of the fact you've had one too many! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tucked in a corner of Old Town Square, the restaurant/bar attracts its fair share of tourists stumbling by, especially those longing for a pint or needing to speak real English. In addition to traditional Irish food, with all day Irish breakfasts served from 9am, the restaurant also serves excellent seafood. Naturally, the popular drinks are Irish: Caffrey's beer (of course!) Guinness and Murphy's. On special occasions - such as St. Patrick's Day - Irish dancing and live folk music pulls in the hordes. Café with a view |
Staromestske namesti 22 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2163 2602 |
Milena is run by the nonprofit Franz Kafka Society, which also operates the ground-floor gallery. Kafka himself never had the chance to visit this particular establishment (which dates to post-communist times) but he was a regular at many of the city's cafés and literary salons. The main selling point here is not the food and drink but the irresistible view of the Old Town Hall's astronomical clock just across the plaza. Strangely, although thousands gather every hour on the square to observe the medieval clockwork in action, there are often empty seats upstairs in the café. Newspapers (in Czech) are provided for customers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A discreet and elegant space in a famous hotel built in 1904, the Paris is one of three surviving art nouveau coffee houses—the others being Obecni Dum and the Hotel Evropa. This is the smallest of the three but also generally the least crowded, thanks to its location on a side street across from the Obecni Dum (Municipal House). Reasonable quality and moderate prices more than make up for the extremely limited selection at this coffee bar in the courtyard of the National Gallery's European Old Masters wing. It's all the more attractive considering decent refreshment stops are shockingly hard to find in the Castle district. The artful interior design here makes it a place worth lingering in. Ornate picture frames line the walls but they frame no paintings, just the soothing ochre-colored plaster beneath. One or two large, apparently genuine old seascapes complement the scene. Located in a 14th-century building, this excellent vegetarian restaurant stays packed from all day. The cafeteria-style set up features a huge salad bar, soups and a selection of main courses which change daily. Popular with students, grandmas, business people and everyone in between, the restaurant also serves a wide range of fruit juices and teas. A large bakery flanks the main restaurant. Perfect for the quick snack or long drawn out afternoon meal, it is only a short walk from both Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Homemade pasta and quality ingredients |
Vinohradska 142 Prague, Prague 13000 Czech Republic +420 2 6731 0378 |
Though winning few points with its name, this upbeat little mom-and-pop joint serves up some of the best Italian in town. The first check mark for quality is the fact that they use real, homemade pasta, which is sometimes difficult to find in the land of pork and dumplings. Topped in tasty red and white sauces with generous doses of olive oil, these dishes are excellent - keep both the lasagne and the tortellini in mind. For the less adventurous, meat-and-potato loving members of your party, there are continental treats such as thick steaks and chicken breast dishes. There's also a fully-stocked bar, an endless wine list (featuring both local and foreign vintages) and Pilsner Urquell on tap. The knick-knack-style décor featuring everything from off-beat art work to obscure pictures surrounds a large tree growing in the middle of the restaurant. A lone pianist playing softly at the back of the restaurant often adds a bit of atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy, Modern Internet Café |
Štepánská 18 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 26 0962 / +420 2 26 9474 |
The couch and chairs, conference table and full bar ensure this place bears no resemblance to an Internet café. It's the perfect spot for both those who want Internet access and those just looking for a cup of java and a place to relax. The interior is very modern and easy on the eyes. Down a long hall and past several rooms is an office fit for the president. It is lined with 15 computers and strategically placed desks, a printer and a scanner - you will feel more like a government official than a customer. Take a break from your hard work with a coffee and a seat on the couch. The only downside is that food is not available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Posh meals in a genteel setting |
Trziste 21/611 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 5753 3109 http://www.restaurant-david.cz/ |
The superlatives start to flow thick and fast once those who have experienced an evening at David begin to describe the place, which is nestled unassumingly on a cobblestoned street near the US embassy. Soft lighting and classical music greet visitors as they enter the simple two-room space. Beautifully prepared Czech dishes set the standard for the city while the charming, friendly service is head and shoulders above the rest. Game lovers will have found the right place - the marinated deer back in truffle sauce is highly recommended. As for traditional Czech cuisine, try the delicious roasted duck and goose breast. DeLux - a Thai restaurant, jazz club and dance club in one - is the newest link in a Canadian-owned chain of clubs and restaurants in the centre of town. The acts - featuring primarily local talent, as is the norm in Prague jazz clubs - range from straight modern jazz to funk and soul. Music is performed from 8-11pm (except on most Sundays and Mondays), and funk and soul is played on the dance floor nightly between 11pm and 4am. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dozens of international teas and coffees are available here. Not so small snacks include a crab pitta sandwich for 37 Kc and a hearty breakfast platter for a little more. Don't be surprised if someone asks you for a game as there are many board and card games to choose from. The small space fills up before long and can get smoky, but when it's warm enough to sit outside there is also a patio. The tobacco shop in front is a good place to stock up on bottles of wine. Imaginative Balkan fare |
Neklanova 20 Prague, Prague 12800 Czech Republic +420 2 29 8815 |
Dolly Bell serves Mediterranean menu with a focus on Yugoslav-style cooking. The surreal décor featuring hanging chairs and tables and numerous clocks gives the place a charm of its own. It is very popular with the Yugoslav expat population, which grew rapidly during the mid-1990s. The Begova soup, containing spicy chicken and vegetables, is a great starter as is the proja, a sweet corn pastry with Balkan cheese. Seafood and grilled meats make up most of the main dishes and, of course, there is tasty Baklava for dessert. There is a good selection of Yugoslav wines on offer too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Join the local hip crowd—made up largely of young professionals and clubbers—in an ultra modern, lime green setting under neon lights. International dishes mixed with Czech favorites make up the cleverly arranged menu. All the beef and chicken dishes are superb. Vegetarians should test drive the grilled eggplant. A respectable collection of Moravian wines and Czech pilsners are complemented by a large bar chalked full of spirits. Reasonably priced and cool, this place attracts a fun crowd. This restaurant serves arguably the best steaks in town. The chefs at this rustic-style Argentine restaurant attribute the splendid taste to their secret combination of organic tenderizing and perfectly calculated cooking times over charcoal fires. Hearty portions of thick cuts - from rib-eyes and top sirloin to tenderloins and T-bones - make this place a paradise for steak lovers. Beer and local specialities |
Nádražní 84 (Staropramen pivovary) Prague, Prague 15000 Czech Republic +420 2 5719 1200 |
The only thing which used to differentiate this pub from any of the other hundreds of smoky, dimly lit dives around town was that it was attached to the Staropramen brewery. Now, with the recent addition of a few coats of paint and improved lighting, the space has come to life, attracting more than just the local cheap beer guzzler. A more genteel crowd has found its way to this pub which serves five varieties of Staropramen – the beer of Prague. Calling to mind the spirit of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia, the restaurant serves up traditional Czech pub food such as Pivni Utopenec (pickled sausage), Pivni Syr (beer cheese) and toast with lard along with goulash, grilled pork, chicken and beef dishes. Café and internet access |
Na Bojišti 8 Prague 12000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 9618 6600 http://www.netwave.cz/ |
A block from I.P. Pavlova metro, resides this underground internet café. The cold blue metal door may look uninviting but an active café of drinkers and surfers lies behind. The café offers a menu of drinks from coffee and juice to a sufficient selection of liquor and the moderate prices will allow you to indulge. Check out their website for a full range of services offered. Late hours combined with its somewhat obscure location, sets this place apart from other internet venues. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hearty Czech fare served in a brewery |
Vodièkova 20 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2223 2448 http://www.npivovar.cz/ |
Something of a Prague landmark, the relatively unassuming entrance to the Novomestsky Pivovar (or New Town Brewery) hides an extensive, well-decorated labyrinth. Take a seat at one of the long wooden beer hall tables for some hearty Czech fare and tasty pilsners brewed on site. Popular with both locals and tourists, the restaurant's massive pig's knee dish is famous throughout town. Over the last couple of years the staff's reputation for surliness has discouraged many. Make sure you check your bill before settling. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Irish pub and internet café |
Janovskeho 36 Prague 17000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 6671 2656 / +420 (0)2 6671 2657 |
A great front room with a chunky bar, old tables and a rack of single malts, makes this a fine place to come for a drink. There is the usual range of beers, including the obligatory Guinness and Murphy's as well as a choice of two Czech brews. Food is served downstairs in a long restaurant that is somewhat tackily decorated in a nautical theme; ropes and nets hang from the ceiling and walls. However, the food is good, although above average priced. The pub also has a small Internet café attached to it with its own entrance, with slightly unusual opening hours and room for five computers. Exclusivity and plush surroundings |
Karoliny svetle 35 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2222 0518 |
Don't be put off by the speakeasy effect of the dark, unlit entrance in a quiet corner of the Old Town where there is not much going on. Push on further into the apartment building entrance where you will find the restaurant complete with plush furnishings. A lone pianist in the corner creates the perfect atmosphere for romance while guests peruse the handwritten menu featuring the day's treats which usually consist of Czech meat dishes and continental-style pasta and seafood. A respectable collection of Moravian vintages nicely complements the meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This trendy cellar restaurant and bar (located on a side street off Anglicka) is popular with the younger crowd. The menu offers a creative take on Czech cuisine with several innovative dishes available like the Pesto Potato. The standard Czech beef, pork and chicken dishes are also available. Its yellow walls and ceiling are typical of bright, newly redone eating establishments in the city. The bar is open late and the prices are moderate, thanks to its location. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Best Czech-owned Italian restaurant in town |
Na hrazi 32 Prague 18000 Czech Republic +420 2 6832 7640 |
The best Czech-owned Italian restaurant in town, La Palma hides a ways out in the Palmovka neighborhood, but its tasty pasta dishes and pizzas make it worth the trip. Attracting a huge lunch crowd, the restaurant's reasonable prices and large portions are hard to beat. The creamy Pomodoro Soup makes for an excellent starter while the Rigatoni alla Siciliana is a local favorite. The normal selection of Moravian wines and beers are on offer. A plus, it is situated next to the Hrabal Wall, a collage history of the famous Czech writer's life. A minus, no awards for friendly service so get ready for the 'what will it be' Czech-style approach. A reminder that you are indeed in Prague rather than Palermo. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located atop the most controversial architectural feat of the last decade, the Dancing Building, this restaurant is sassy and knows it. The St. Peter's fish in champagne sauce is a favorite entrée as is the duck breast in port wine sauce. A heavenly dessert tray offers rich chocolate and fruit cakes. Follow the "oom pah" music echoing up the stairs to this basement beer hall restaurant in the Municipal House—the city's finest example of art nouveau architecture. A favorite of tour groups (especially Germans) and locals with a taste for nostalgia, it serves up Czech dishes alongside traditional pilsners. Many argue that this is the king of Prague pizzerias. Judging by numbers served, it may well be the most popular. The foyer is always full of customers waiting for tables or for takeout pizzas. Don't worry though, the host professionally manages the mob and the wait is seldom long. Although it also serves enormous pasta dishes and calzones that have outgrown their plates, regular pizza remains the specialty. The selection is diverse and the pizzas are all prepared and baked at the front of the restaurant. The prices meet the Prague standard for Italian cuisine. Finding this pizzeria is not difficult. A large sign will point you in the right direction to this restaurant, situated directly behind the Divadlo Na Vinohradech on the north side of Namesti Miru. Inside customers will find a quaint restaurant modestly decorated. For starters, dive into sea snails in garlic butter before choosing one of the freshwater or saltwater seafood options. In the warmer months, you can enjoy a pleasant, relaxing lunch outside under the twin towers of the Church of Our Lady before Tyn. According to The New York Times, this place offers "the freshest fish in Central Europe". Review © 2007, Wcities |

In style and elegance |
U milosrdnych 6 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2231 2677 http://www.lascene.cz/ |
Nestled in the quiet corner of busy Prague, la Scène is style and elegance personified. The restaurant is tastefully done with dim lights, classy furniture and stylish design. The food speaks for itself. Dishes like Marinated Salmon with honey, Old Fish Mustard and Apple Roll with chocolate sauce and ice cream make you want more! Check out their wine and champagne list—it's one of the best in town. Hit the Champagne and Cigar Club if you enjoy smoking, and play the piano while you are there! Of course it is a little heavy on your pocket but you will be more than satisfied with the food, ambience and staff. The place is the finest—after all, Mozart played here once! Rytirska 10 Prague, Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2421 0252 |
A tasty yet hidden jewel in the heart of Prague. Jammed with an all-ages, all-walks-of-life crowd at lunchtime, this restaurant serves up traditional, spicy Chinese dishes. The Kung-pao chicken with rice is a local favorite as are the light noodles with vegetables especially popular with students popping over for a quick lunch. The fish platter is more popular at dinnertime when the space is less crowded. Bright posters depicting traditional scenes cover the walls and a calming fountain has been placed in the center of the space. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The crowd is predominantly Czech and under thirty but expats and tourists are by no means unrepresented. The food of choice is not unexpectedly of the liquid variety but there is a menu offering tasty meat dishes off the grill. The small dance floor suffers needlessly every time the DJ spins tracks from Grease. One major drawback about this place is that the service is very unsatisafactory, so don't expect much there. Hip, low-key joint |
Trziste 10 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 5753 0205 |
Popular with young Czechs and expats, this establishment is situated right in the middle of Mala Strana yet lies just off the beaten track. Most people come for the alcoholic drinks, of which there are many, from classic cocktails to the newfangled, salaciously-named. Although just a few steps below street level, the venue seems subterranean with its gloomy lighting and vaulted ceilings. A selection of assorted tables and seats give it a comfortably lived-in feel. Genuine-looking frescos in gothic style adorn some of the walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Koliba is a step back in time with live dulcimer bands and dancers decked out in folk costumes performing nightly under rustic wooden alcoves or on a small stage. The cuisine is as traditionally Czech as the entertainment and service. Dive into old world recipes featuring pork, beef and chicken complemented by Moravian vintages. Located within yards of the National Theatre (although on the other side of the road), this large restaurant sits behind a crystal shop of the same name. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Calling all rustic romantics! |
V.P. Ckalova 15 Prague 16000 Czech Republic +420 (0)2 2432 1505 |
Something of a cult following has developed around this inexpensive little spot and for good reason. Lit only by candles and the fire of the large, open grill on which everything is prepared, it's a virtual throwback to a simpler place where electricity has yet to make its mark and everyone sits at wooden communal benches. Don't let the latter put any of you meat eating lovebirds off as its rustic ambience makes this an ideal place for dates. The small menu offers pork, chicken, and beef on the grill. Reservations are a good idea. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Next door to a seafood shop this small restaurant serves freshly prepared sushi of all varieties. The interior is simple and carefully designed. A wood floor and pale green walls give the small room a sense of more space and light than it actually has. Popular with Prague's businessmen, the restaurant's prices are quite high but not excessive. The helpful staff speak English and the chef works in full view behind the counter. Based on the famous novel |
Široká 20 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2481 3964 http://www.svejk.cz/ |
this theme restaurant based on the classic Czech novel The Good Soldier Svejk serves traditional Czech cuisine. Their mixture of folklore and traditional food has been so successful that the restaurant has expanded and become and become a veritable franchise. Beef, pork and chicken dominate the menu and vegetarians will be hard pressed to find much more than the usual fried cheese, mushrooms or cauliflower. As the original restaurant is located near Prague's Old Town Square and in the Jewish Quarter, it is frequented by tourists and locals alike. Outdoor seating in the summer never fails to pull in the crowds. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don't let the ambiguous location discourage you from this restaurant. Turn those few extra corners and you will discover its charming patio and entrance. One look at the menu will immediately set this restauarant apart from others in the city. Dishes representing cuisine from France, Italy, Norway, Ireland and Mexico sprinkle the page. Although each nationality is only allocated a few dishes, the overall choice is large and obviously diverse. The décor is a skillful blend of furnishings characteristic of each of the 5 regions. Modest and unassuming, Taj Mahal serves tasty Indian dishes inside a charming, yet down-to-earth space. The rhythms of Indian music greet visitors as they enter and musicians wielding sitars keep the beat throughout the evening, without being intrusive. The contrast is stark between the bright, renovated Hotel Adria at street level and the cave-like interior (complete with impressions of scenes from ancient mythology) of its restaurant below. Yet there is something about the unusual ambience of the place which makes it popular with locals, business folk and tourists. Candle-lit and romantic, the restaurant offers French and international dishes alongside more standard Czech fare. A good selection of French and Moravian wines complement the cuisine. Well-known traditional Prague pub |
Kremencova 11 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2493 4019/ +420 2 2493 4020 http://www.ufleku.cz/ |
This popular historic pub, with a capacity for 1,200 people, was founded in 1499. The beer is brewed on site and a visit to the brewery part of the building is a must, as is a visit to the brewery museum. There is live traditional Czech music every evening and cabaret programmes are often arranged. During the summer months, there is a beer garden which can be used. This is a an excellent place to come to experience Czech tradition, style, music and service - as long as you can put up with the crowds of tourists making a racket. While you're, check out the brewery museum, gallery, and cabaret. There is traditional Czech decor, i.e. wooden tables and a few involuntary donations by wild animals on the walls. There are several rooms, each playing music. The clientele are mainly large groups of German and Italian tourists, which means it's very noisy. This is a traditional beer drinker's domain - noisy, but good-natured drinking is the name of the game. It can get very smoky, so if it's summer, you should sit in the garden if you want to avoid the smoke. Despite being completely overrun by tourists, this place does maintain some traditional Czech charm. Given that a lot of pubs close quite early, even in the centre, this can be a great late night haunt. Beer (Kc 50), wine (Kc 150 per bottle) and soft drinks are all available. The prices are higher than in other Czech pubs, but the management knows it could raise them higher and still draw people in. The food is also predominantly traditional Czech fare, but there are some more international dishes available. Quick lunches are reasonably priced at up to Kc 100, while dinners and specialities can cost twice this amount. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Excellent new cafe/bar restaurant with a fantastic two-level interior. An old, manual wash machine greets you while antique armless couches line the wall and beat up instruments dangle from the floor of the upper floor loft. Ten different pork and chicken dishes highlight the menu. While the food is nothing you haven't already had in this part of the world, the dishes are well prepared and filling. Although this immaculate 15th-century cellar restaurant is nominally Czech, the chef has diverted into continental territory. Soft lighting accompanies you down, down, down to an intimate space covered in stone-vaulted ceilings. The turtle soup is a local favorite as is the escargot in the starters department. Although straightforward beef, chicken and pork dishes are available, someone in your party must try an aligator or ostrich steak! The place tends to be quiet and usually has most guests speaking in hushed tones. There is an impressively wide selection of Moravian wines on offer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In a rare moment of wisdom a few years back a certain local English language newspaper voted this superb restaurant the most romantic in town. And indeed it is easy to see why with its two charming, floral patterned rooms and picturesque location near the foot of Charles Bridge. And the food is every bit as good. Roasted Saddle of Wild Boar with Almond Pancakes, Smoked Duck in Honey Glaze, Tuna Tartar with Quail Eggs and Open Ravioli stuffed with tiger prawns are some of the mouth-watering options. This restaurant has been here since the heady days of the 15th century. U Pinkasu has not left the spot since 1843 and looks it. It is not particularly clean or cheerful but when you are paying extremely reasobale prices for a beer and a full meal in this area (a minute's walk form Wenceslas Square), you cannot complain all that much. Sister restaurant to the popular establishment of the same name near Namesti Republiky, U Sadlu II lacks the medieval décor (stained glass windows and numerous coats of arms) that its original location offers. The new place feels more like a business venture than the bacchanalian dungeon of the original, but they have transplanted the eccentric and bold menu. Again, amazing meat dishes dominate and you can feast like a medieval knight on all sorts of game from venison and boar to goose, or else enjoy some of the city's best Utopenec (pickled sausage) and sample funky salads laden with pork fat and egg. And the story goes... |
Provaznická 3 Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2423 2528 http://www.uprovaznice.cz/ |
This bar has an interesting story behind it. U provaznice, meaning 'At the Rope-Maker's Wife's' was opened by a ropemaker's bored housewife many years ago. Legend reveals that she was so beautiful that all the men of Prague longed to marry her. But she only had eyes for her husband, the rope-maker, even though he was away. Boredom lead her to open this bar with the permission of her husband, and U provaznice came into being. Soon rope-maker heard rumors that his wife was unfaithful. Upon returning, he strangled his wife with one of his fine ropes. Today, a noose hangs at the corner of the bar, and it is said that the premises is haunted. It is situated just off Mustek, and provides delicious food and Gambrinus at low prices. This place is for those who prefer a nice, cold pivo in a local setting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This new, super-chic restaurant is very much New York's SoHo meets Prague dungeon. Brushed stone walls surround pale wood floors and cool woven leather chairs while the sophisticated funky tunes keep a fun, yet controlled beat for the beautiful people who now flock here. Serving food until late, the late-night prowlers have also put this on the list of stops since the cocktail lounge downstairs stays open until 4a. In addition to large salads, appetizers include Curried Salmon (marinated in vodka and served with a horseradish cream sauce) and Buffalo Wings (served with blue cheese dressing). From the grill you can choose from spare ribs, lamb chops, T-bone, grilled tuna steak, hamburgers or a grilled Chicken Sandwich (with lemon and rosemary). A wide range of Czech and foreign beers and wines are also served along with a full cocktail menu. This place is reasonably priced considering the elegant surroundings and late opening.
