About 30 films are selected yearly from the European Union member countries. Two of the town's better cinemas, Kino 64 U Hradeb and Lucerna, screen the festival's offerings before moving on to Brno where the festival closes. There are also forums where spectators can meet the filmmakers. Some past films include the Spanish "La Comunidad" by Alex de la Iglesia and "De Grot", by Dutch director Martin Koolhoven. Check out the popular all-night-weekend-screening known as the Marathon of European Films. See website for yearly particulars. Review © 2007, Wcities |

From its small beginnings in 1993, this multi-city event brings features, documentaries and amateur films to eager Czech audiences. Prague's sophisticated cinema-goers get the chance to see the best of Hollywood and Western European productions every January, often months before they go on general release outside their home country. Where to star-gaze in Bohemia |
Panská 1 Prague Czech Republic +420 221 41 1011 http://www.kviff.com/ |
Karlovy Vary offers a huge selection of international films during nearly two weeks in July each year. A fair sampling of foreign stars, directors, and moguls add a touch of glamor. The town is near enough to Prague for visitors to drive or take the bus out in the morning, catch a film or two, and return in the evening. Tickets are inexpensive and highly sought-after. They are sold either at the festival headquarters in the Thermal Hotel or from booths on the main promenade. During the event, obtaining accommodations in Karlovy Vary is next to impossible. Founded soon after World War II, Prague Spring quickly established itself as one of the continent's major classical festivals. The offerings have expanded to take in contemporary groups in addition to the high-quality classical orchestras. Advance tickets for Czechs, or those who can speak the language, go on sale in late winter and must be ordered by mid-March. Two weeks before the festival's opening, leftover tickets are sold at the box office and at some local ticket agencies. Tickets ordered through travel agents can be expensive. Annual August Arias |
State Opera House, Legerova 75 Nove Mesto Prague 11000 Czech Republic +420 2 2422 7266 (box office) http://www.opera.cz/en |
The city's State Opera House presents a short pre-season Verdi Festival every year, commencing from the 3rd Tuesday in August to September. The offerings are drawn from the more familiar repertoire of the composer's works. For visitors who can't be in town during the regular opera season, this is a good chance to take in a high-quality production in this lovely, ornate hall which in itself makes a visit worthwhile.
