Blatouch

Old Town refuge
Vezenská 4
Prague 11000
Czech Republic
+420 2 2232 8643
http://www.blatouch.cz/
This is a longstanding favorite with couples and café intellectuals. The narrow floor space means seating can be tight but there's a small loft above. The drinks menu features all the usual favorites including inexpensive cocktails. Browse the large bookcase in the front and discover what can be bought on the cheap. Smoke often hangs thickly in the air above the chatter of friendly debates as the night wears on.

Czech Republic

Celnice is a stylish nightclub and restaurant and is one of the swankiest spots in town. Owned by Pilshner Brewery, the club's uptairs restaurant specializes in delicious Czech cuisine like Roast Rabbit or Pork Knuckle. The pastas and salads are great too. The most alluring features of Celnice is the downstairs club. With the buzzing crowd, curvy centerpiece counter, as well as the ultra-hip tunes blasting in the background, it's easy to tell that this is one of the coolest hotspots in Prague.

This low-ceiling hall nicknamed 'The Hollow' is a large and friendly pub with a wide menu and choice of beer. A few hundred yards from Wenceslas Square, it tends to be quite popular with English-speaking expats and Czechs who gather around the central bar or on the wooden tables around it. The menu includes a mixture of Tex-Mex, traditional Czech and contemporary American dishes. The choice ranges from fried chicken wings to spicy burritos. The prices are slightly higher than those of ordinary Czech pubs in the area.

A good time is almost guaranteed at this underground club with a long bar, ample seating and plenty of room to dance. Good Czech bands such as J.A.R. and big-band rockers like Laura and Her Tigers are regulars. A sixties, seventies or eighties themed disco is usually the Tuesday night special. Visiting jazz legends often play gigs here as well. With good drinks, good music, and a good attitude, this joint see your evening out right.

Na Verandach

Beer and local specialities
Nádražní 84
(Staropramen pivovary)
Prague, Prague 15000
Czech Republic
+420 2 5719 1200
The only thing which used to differentiate this pub from any of the other hundreds of smoky, dimly lit dives around town was that it was attached to the Staropramen brewery. Now, with the recent addition of a few coats of paint and improved lighting, the space has come to life, attracting more than just the local cheap beer guzzler. A more genteel crowd has found its way to this pub which serves five varieties of Staropramen – the beer of Prague. Calling to mind the spirit of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia, the restaurant serves up traditional Czech pub food such as Pivni Utopenec (pickled sausage), Pivni Syr (beer cheese) and toast with lard along with goulash, grilled pork, chicken and beef dishes.

Kubelíkova 1548/27
Prague 13000
Czech Republic
+420 2 9633 0911

Standing on the site of a movie theater, this is arguably the best venue in town for live alternative and world music. Popular with excessive artsy types and heavy-drinking musicians, the place is known for its good-humored outlandishness. Local DJs spin records mostly house and techno nightly from 11p in the Divadelni Bar, and acoustic sets are often featured in the back bar. Palace Akropolis stays open as long as the drinks are still flowing and patrons are standing.

Pod Loubim

A taste of London's Soho
Europska 26/530
Prague 16000
Czech Republic
+420 (0)2 3332 6097
Pod Loubim is one of the new breed of stylish Czech pubs that are beginning to spread slowly across the city. It is located outside the city centre but a visit is well worth the ten-minute metro ride. The pub is always busy, the food is excellent, and the cool interior could fool you into thinking you're in Soho, London, rather than a Prague suburb! The bar at the front of the pub is, unusually for Prague, given over to standing. The décor of the two large back rooms is underplayed and minimal and relies on clever lighting for its warm ambience. The food is medium-priced, portions are large and the menu ranges from traditional Czech dishes to seafood pasta and salmon salads.

St. Nicholas Café

Hip, low-key joint
Trziste 10
Prague 11000
Czech Republic
+420 (0)2 5753 0205
Popular with young Czechs and expats, this establishment is situated right in the middle of Mala Strana yet lies just off the beaten track. Most people come for the alcoholic drinks, of which there are many, from classic cocktails to the newfangled, salaciously-named. Although just a few steps below street level, the venue seems subterranean with its gloomy lighting and vaulted ceilings. A selection of assorted tables and seats give it a comfortably lived-in feel. Genuine-looking frescos in gothic style adorn some of the walls.

Karmelitská 23
Prague 11800
Czech Republic

A popular hangout, its food and service are better than average and a comfortable vibe pervades throughout. For something more substantial, try the Chicken Kebab. Jazz fans take note as the tiny cellar plays host to live local jazz every night of the week. Usually frequented by people who like to linger and talk, this is perhaps the only place in town open till the wee hours.
