Part of the city walls |
Viale di Porta Ardeatina Rome, Rome 00154 |
The name 'Bastione Ardeatino' indicates the section of the ancient Aurelian city walls, which were rebuilt by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane in 1536. He was given the task of restoring the city walls by Pope Paul III in 1530 because the Pope feared the possibility of a Turkish attack. The 'Bastione' is also known as the large bastion of Sangallo, taking its name from its illustrious maker. Review © 2009, Wcities |
