Monte del Grano

Sepulchre under the hill
Piazza dei Tribuni
Rome, Rome 00171
+39 6 48 8991 (Tourist Information)
The name is taken from the shape, which resembles a sheaf of wheat, but it is in fact a tomb. At the end of the 19th century, a beautiful sarcophagus was discovered inside, at present in the Musei Capitolini; it contained a dark blue glass vase, now in the British Museum in London, called the Portland vase. The long access tunnel and round central room are all that remain of the original sepulchre. When first discovered, it was wrongly believed to be the mausoleum of the last member of the Severus family. Admission: phone or fax to arrange a visit
