From alchemist to chemist |
89 Piazza Trevi Rome, Rome 00187 +39 (0)6 679 2210 |
This is in all probability Rome's oldest pharmacy, having been in existence for 450 years. Tourists in the Trevi square and even Romans do not know how old this shop is, still decked out in the style of old-fashioned chemist shops. At the entrance, an old bronze mortar bears a date which is probably when the shop opened. The 18th century furniture is in dark wood and the shelves bear lovely blue ceramic vases that once held medicinal herbs. It was here that the workshop that prepared the balsam for Pope Innocent once stood. It no longer exists but there are many alembics and mortars that remain. Review © 2009, Wcities |
