The young heroine |
Piazza Sant´Alessio Rome, Rome 00153 |
The statue of Joan of Arc, the young girl who believed it was her destiny to save France, stands near the basilica of Sant'Alessio on the Aventino. She was shown by Massimo Real del Sarte, a French sculptor, in the last moments of her life with the flames of the pyre on which she was burnt licking at her feet. The sculptor donated the work to the Comune of Rome in 1935 but it was only inaugurated and blessed many years later due to the difficult events leading to and during WW2. Review © 2009, Wcities |
