While best known for its great steaks, this upscale restaurant also serves fine seafood entrees. The baked scampi is highly recommended, the shrimp are big and sweet. However, the best of the house is the thick cuts of choice, Washington state-grown beef. Steaks and prime rib are expertly prepared and you taste the beef, not the pepper or other typically overused seasonings. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the hustle and bustle of Sacramento's busy downtown corridor is Dad's, a friendly neighborhood lunch joint famous for its slightly offbeat take on classic sandwich combinations. The menu features 27 sandwiches, both cold and grilled (many with ingredients such as Hungarian paprika, walnuts, pepper plant sauce and wax peppers - and all with names like "Bad Breath Special," "Hot Blonde," "Fat Elvis" and "Bikini Kill"), so decision making can be tough (especially since you can substitute tri-tip on any selection for just 75 cents). Shady sidewalk seating under S Street's canopy of trees makes for an eminently pleasant lunch. See website for full sandwich list, soup and salad options, breakfast menu and event calendar.

This dining spot keeps diners cool with its high ceilings, and its earth-tone decor is relaxing. Through the front door, a host waits to seat you at one of the dining tables. The menu ranges from pizza (which the chefs deftly toss in the open kitchen in the rear) to steaks, chicken and other entrees. Along one wall is a full bar, which is a pleasant place to try one of the house special microbrews while waiting for a table.

Take its name literally; if you drive too fast, you will miss this tiny eatery. The decor is not anything special, a few boxing posters and pictures of big fish. The lack of elbowroom is more than made up for by the size of its burgers. The "Squeeze Burger," is a third of a pound of ground chuck with a cornucopia of fixings all squeezed in to a huge whole grain bun.

This eatery has been voted the Best Ribs and Barbecue in Sacramento by readers of Sacramento Magazine and the Sacramento News and Review. Its oak wood fires, slow-smoked cooking techniques and special blends of sauces convey a tangy flavor to the ribs, brisket and burgers. The sandwiches are tasty and almost too large to put in your mouth. A good selection of deli sandwiches, as well as vegetarian specials is available. You can purchase loaves of bread, muffins, cakes and other baked goods. Try the broccoli, cheese and potato soup served with half a sourdough bread bun. Tables are small and the main seating area gets very crowded at lunch, but you can escape to the covered patio seating.

An eclectic crowd, night shift and early shift workers come for the breakfasts. Try the Huevos Rancheros or a plain eggs-and-toast breakfast; the portions are generous. A variety of entrees is featured for lunch and dinner, ranging from seafood such as grilled swordfish (plump and flavorful) to spicy Mexican carnitas. For dessert, the bakery provides exceptional cookies, mouth-watering cakes, and various pastries. During lunch, the patio is usually crowded. This restaurant is flooded with sunlight during most of the day. The windows, wide and draped with swooping curtains, illuminate the splashy fresh flower arrangements and murals. The cuisine, American-based, is influenced by sunny French and Italian culinary ideas. Traditional meat eaters will enjoy one of the melt-in-your-mouth steaks. Plenty of seafood dishes are featured on the menu, as well. The menu changes each month. For dessert, try the delicious Boston cream pie. You can purchase wine by the glass, bottle or just half of a glass. See their website for further information.
