Salamanca is a city of many faces: cultural, monumental, dedicated to the service industry, university-oriented (with two universities and almost 40,000 students), and home to cattle breeders and matadors alike. With the beauty of its characteristic Villamayor sandstone buildings and plenty of nightlife, the city offers something for everyone at any time of the day or night.

Art Exhibits

As a centre of culture, the city is home to many forms of artistic expression exhibited at galleries and museums. The most important of these are San Eloy, which holds the best national and international collections, Garci Grande, La Salina, and the exhibition halls found in the Palacio de Abrantes, all well-known for their dedication to promoting art in the city. Other important venues include the Patio de Escuelas and the Varrón, Galería Reyes Católicos, and Ateneo galleries. But without doubt, Salamanca's greatest works of art can be found along the streets in the Old Quarter, lined with monumental buildings made from golden Villamayor sandstone. You could spend hours just contemplating Plaza Mayor or the domes of either the new cathedral or the old cathedral. Then there's Casa de las Conchas, housing the municipal library, the Clerecía (or Espíritu Santo Church), the famous university façade with its much-sought-after frog, the Torre del Gallo and the Universidad Pontificia.

Other must-visits include the collection of dolls and curious objects found in the Museo Art Nouveau y Art Decó, housed in the beautiful Casa Lis-, the Masonic Lodge, the collection of clocks found in Colegio Fonseca, personal items and archives belonging to renowned writer and philosopher Miguel de Unamuno in his House and Museum, and, last but not least, the old manuscripts found in the Museo de San Esteban.

The Salamanca Museum or Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes, the Santa Clara Museum and the one dedicated to the city's history house collections narrating Salamanca's most important events. The Museo Taurino also features an interesting collection on bullfighting, a very important and deeply-rooted tradition in Salamanca.

Cinema

Salamanca has an increasing number of cinemas for film buffs. Cines Van Dyck is the most well-known, with six screens, and there are an additional four in the Van Dyck Joven cinema, which organises marathon film fests. Multicines Salamanca features blockbuster films on its six screens, while cines Bretón offers independent and original language movies on four screens. Then there's the Filmoteca and the Teatro Auditorio de Caja Duero, which organise film series on specific directors, actors, documentaries and shorts.

Music

Salamanca does not have a plethora of music venues, but there are a couple of important ones: the Palacio de Congresos, for classic opera and zarzuela (Spanish opera) or pop and rock concerts, and the Auditorio de Caja Duero. But the number of stages found in numerous bars throughout town, including El Corrillo - for jazz and soul - The Irish Rover, for up and coming Irish and Spanish groups, and Camelot, dedicated to Spanish rhythms, compensates for the lack of major venues.

Theatre

Salamanca is rapidly growing in terms of theatre space available, especially for new companies. These venues include the La Vega, Pizarrales, and Miraltormes cultural centres. For large-scale productions with an international focus, options include the Juan del Enzina theatre and the stage found in the courtyard of Colegio Fonseca.

Nightlife

Bordadores District
This is one of the most central neighbourhoods in the city with a lot of options for going out, ranging from cafés, such as Bécquer or Pub Monumental, to bars, such as Pub Tino's, Camelot (with a fun Medieval ambience), Gatsby, Niebla, or Trastevere (famous for good music)

Gran Via
In just a few years, this avenue has become a popular nightspot. It has everything from quiet and relaxed places, such as España 45 or Siglo I, to more happening places, such as El Callejón (with great theme parties) and Versus, while the city's "beautiful people" tend to gather at Café Musical. You'll also find lots of bars renowned for their tapas, such as Queen Pub, Brujas, with its witch-inspired decor, or El Rocío, for a taste of Andalusia.

Old Quarter
This area is famous for its monuments, but there are other possibilities as well, especially suited to taking a break from sightseeing. You can have a coffee at El Principal or a piece of cake at Alcaraván. After nightfall, however, Salamanca becomes a little more Irish at The Irish Rover, with its university and multicultural atmosphere.

San Justo
For more "alternative" options, check out the area surrounding small Plaza de San Justo, where various "urban tribes" hang out; whether punk, grunge, hippie or indie, they’re all here. Popular spots include Luxor, with its "luxurious" Egyptian decor, to Sargento Pipper's, with a carefree atmosphere, to artsy Sol or Moderno.

Plaza Mayor
This is the best spot to begin your night out grazing on tapas, beer and wine. There are lots of options on any of the small streets around the square, especially on Carmelitas, such as Pino, Belle Epóque or El Faro. This street is in turn surrounded by what's known as Plaza de los Litros (Litre Square), where 7 bars compete to attract folks for that all-important first drink.

Alcaraván

Very popular with university students
Compañía, 12
Salamanca 37008
Spain
This is one of the most popular university coffee shops, located opposite the Universidad Pontificia and very near several faculties. Moreover, at this café they support young artists, giving them the chance to exhibit their works on the premises. This cafe could almost be two different places. On the ground floor, you can read the daily press and use the place for business meetings. On the first floor, you will find many students who go there to have a pincho (small portions of food) or some of their popular cakes. Also, you can see painted windows on the walls depicting the most interesting attractions in town.

If you like Modernism and art work from the Belle Epoque, this museum is a must-visit. It can be found near the two cathedrals in the house (Casa Lis) built in 1905 by Miguel de Lis, an important furrier from Salamanca. In the early 80s, the town council bought the property, converting it later into the Casa de Cultura (cultural centre). Since 1995, however, it has housed the most important Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection in Spain. All the pieces included in its collection were donated by Manuel Ramos Andrade, an antiques dealer. The most noteworthy items on display include china dolls, Fabergé jewels and glassware by Lalique and Emile Gallé. Interesting temporary exhibitions are also organized. The museum has a small gift shop as well.

Ateneo

Exhibitions, poetry and literary gatherings
Zamora, 64
Salamanca 37002
Spain
+34 923 21 5315
This building is located in a lovely pedestrian street in the center of the town. As its name suggests (ateneo means atheneum or cultural center), here you can meet other people who are also interested in literature and the arts. They organize all kinds of cultural activities throughout the year: exhibitions of paintings and photographs, conferences, poetry readings, literary gatherings, competitions, etc. Moreover, Ateneo is located very near several exhibition halls, the Salamanca Multiplex and several pubs and tapas bars where they serve pinchos (similar to canapés). This place is therefore ideally located if you feel like going somewhere else after seeing an exhibition or taking part in any of the activities they organize.

Bullfighting Museum

Bullfighting and local matadors
Doctor Piñuela, 5-7
Salamanca 37002
Spain
+34 923 22 6984
This museum is completely devoted to the art of bullfighting, and it is located next to Plaza Mayor. Bullfighting is a deeply-rooted tradition in Salamanca, and here you can see objects related to important local matadors: ornate costumes, portraits, photographs, etc., and large, stuffed bulls' heads. There are three different sections: one is strictly devoted to bullfighting, the second one deals with bulls themselves, and the third one with art related to bullfighting. The place turns out to be a real tribute to matadors such as El Viti, El Nino de la Capea and Julio Robles, all born in Salamanca.

This is one of the liveliest nightclubs in town. It is located right in the center of the town, in an area that is totally pedestrianized. It is surrounded by fast food restaurants and is very near an area with plenty of nightlife. All of this turns this place into a must for just about anyone. If you like surprises regarding the music that is played, this is your place. Moreover, they organize parties from time to time: the snow party, the bull party, the April fair, etc. Pianos, cornets and a large clock like the ones found at bus stations are some of the objects used to decorate the place. It has also mirrors on the ceiling and lighting that creates a very warm atmosphere.

This is a cute coffee shop that was called 'Dacha' until some years ago when it took on this new identity. At present, it is a cozy place where you can have a coffee, play cards or board games and take in exhibitions by young artists. It is located right in the old city, which makes it very popular with tourists and people out for a walk, and is surrounded by souvenir shops and all kinds of restaurants. The place is decorated with the works by the artists exhibiting as it is a good starting point in their artistic careers. It is mainly frequented by university students, and they play rather soft music like boleros and ballads.

Popular with football players, bullfighters and their hangers-on, with lots of money to spend, this club is famous for organizing theme parties based on famous groups or characters. Parties include ones dedicated to the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and to comic-book characters, such as Asterix and Obelix. During the summer they set up an indoor swimming pool to entertain the children with water fights and the like. Tuesday is ladies day when women are offered a free drink. The interior has been designed to resemble a typical village street with its lamp posts, trees, wooden house fronts and even clothes-lines with miniature clothes hanging out to dry. You can drop in during the late afternoon for coffee.

This is definitely the most famous nightclub in town. It was opened fifteen years ago and it is very popular with foreigners studying at the local university. It is ideally located right in the center of the town, in a pedestrian area with many coffee shops and fast food restaurants all around. The place itself is very special, because it was once a convent. When you enter, you'll feel you are entering a medieval castle with typical passageways, turrets, dungeons and knights in shining armor. They have a very interesting replica of the famous Excalibur sword, too. There are two rooms with different atmospheres to choose from. On the ground floor, there is the dance floor, while on the first floor, you will find a quieter spot, great for a chat with friends. They also organize great concerts.

Church of the Holy Spirit

Marvel of Spanish baroque
Compañía, 1-5
Salamanca 37002
Spain
This fine example of Spanish baroque architecture has belonged to the Pontificia University since 1941. King Felipe III was responsible for ordering its construction in 1617 and the work took almost 50 years to complete. The two commanding towers and the impressive baroque dome (designed by Andrés García de Quiñones in the mid-18th century) confuse some visitors into thinking that this great Jesuit church is the Cathedral. The interior galleries, side chapels and fluted Tuscan-style pilasters are all outstanding examples of their kind. The sculpture of the suffering Christ, created in 1760 by Luis Salvador Carmona, is magnificent. Admission is free. Mass: M-F 1:45p, Sa 7:30p, Su & holidays 12:30p.

The porcelain dolls, the Fabergé jewels and the Lalique and Emile Gallé glasswork are all outstanding. There are also displays of paintings, furniture, porcelain, enamels and bronzes.

Museum of San Esteban

Collection in an impressive building
Convento de San Esteban
Plaza del Concilio de Trento, s/n
Salamanca 37001
Spain
+34 923 21 5000
This sacred and stunning place is one of the gems of plateresque architecture in Salamanca. This was the style much in vogue in Spain and the colonies during the late 15th and the early 16th centuries. The convent also welcomed important figures such as Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Ignacio de Loyola, Francisco de Vitoria and Christopher Columbus. The museum's collection spreads throughout the convent, and features beautiful items such as ornaments, silver and gold-work articles, shrines, religious paintings and other valuable pieces. The two most note-worthy items, however, are the score with Gregorian chants, said to date from between the 10th and 11th centuries, and a bible given to San Vicente Ferrer by the Papa Luna (Benedict XIII, 1394-1423), the famous anti-pope.

Old Cathedral

Example of Spanish Romanesque architecture
Patio Chico, 4
Salamanca 37001
Spain
Work on this cathedral began in 1150 and was completed in the early 13th century. It takes the form of a Latin cross and has a dome called the Torre del Gallo on account of the weathercock on the top. Take a look at the beautiful murals in San Martín's chapel that were signed by the painter, Antón Sánchez de Segovia in 1262. The impressive 12th century altarpiece is dominated by the statue of Salamanca's patron saint, La Virgen de la Vega. The altarpiece has 53 panels describing the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, created by the Italian artist, Dello Delli in 1422. The Gothic tombs, the cloister, the chapels and the chapter house where the museum is located are all worth visiting. You have to go through the Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral) to reach the Catedral Vieja (Old Cathedral).

Popular with young politicians and Salamanca's beautiful people, this is a perfect place to have a drink and chat while enjoying the theme parties and promotional events in the summer on its huge outdoor terrace. Inside, it's so lush and green it's like a forest. Lots of people come for the big screen TV to watch music videos, movies and football matches. There's good music too, and the space is split into a lively area and a chill-out zone.

Behind the impressive arches, there are numerous bars and cafés with terraces in the summer to enjoy daily city life passing by. It's an irregular square surrounded by three floors of buildings with symmetrical balconies above 88 semi-circular arches supported by solid stone pillars. If you're looking for a calm and special place with impeccable service, then this is the place for you. The music is soft and relaxing, and the decor is very fine, adding to the distinguished ambiance: mirrors, flowers and comfortable stools all around. There is a good variety of cocktails to choose from, such as daiquiris, bloody marys, mojitos, manhattans or house specials. Each of their drinks is served with a pincho (canapé), such as a Spanish omelette, cold meat, nuts or chocolates. Tino's opened in 1988 and has become quite popular since then.

Santa Clara, 2
Salamanca 37001
Spain
+34 923 26 9623
This convent is a veritable treasure trove. If you want to see murals from the 12th to the 16th century, you should definitely visit it. You can also see a wonderful wooden crucifix from the 15th century in Gothic-Byzantine style, canvases from different periods, sculptures and medallions in relief from the 16th century and coffered ceilings from the 14th century. The building itself dates from 1250, though it has been remodeled on several occasions after being destroyed by fire. On the tour of the convent, you will also visit four sections worthy of note: the low choir, the high choir's northern gallery, the space above the church's vaulted ceilings and the balcony from which there is a pretty and generally unknown view of La Clerecía Church, San Esteban Convent and the Cathedrals.
