In a city like this, you can't help but go to a couple of places with a true bullfighting atmosphere. You could begin this little walk at Museo Taurino (the bullfighting museum) in Calle Doctor Piñuela, very near the Plaza Mayor (main square). Leaving here and going down to the left along Calle Toro, take the first road on your left to reach Calle Concejo, but not before taking a look at the Palacio de Montellano. In Calle Concejo, towards the left, is a little square called La Libertad where you can see the façade of the Casa de los Rodríguez Manzano. Continuing down along the Cuesta del Carmen you will come across the Sala de Exposiciones Unamuno (Unamuno Exhibitions Hall) where young artists display their works.

At the end of Cuesta del Carmen, turn right into the Plaza de San Juan Bautista, where San Juan Bautista de Barbalos Church is situated. Carry on straight ahead, and in the first street on the left, Condes de Crespo Rascón, is Casa de Santa Teresa de Jesús. Opposite is Palacio de Garci Grande, one of whose sides leads into Plaza de los Bandos where you can see Casa de Doña María la Brava and Colegio de San Elías.

Now nearing the end of our tour, go up Calle Zamora, full of art galleries, taking in the Carmelite church and the circular church of San Marcos, a treasure of 1178. From here you need to cross Plaza del Ejército, go to Paseo de Torres Villarroel, and walk a little way in order to see Las Salesas before reaching Plaza de Toros de la Glorieta, the bullring that for over 100 years has played host to some of the greatest and most renowned figures of the bullfighting world.

Bullfighting Museum

Bullfighting and local matadors
Doctor Piñuela, 5-7
Salamanca 37002
Spain
+34 923 22 6984
This museum is completely devoted to the art of bullfighting, and it is located next to Plaza Mayor. Bullfighting is a deeply-rooted tradition in Salamanca, and here you can see objects related to important local matadors: ornate costumes, portraits, photographs, etc., and large, stuffed bulls' heads. There are three different sections: one is strictly devoted to bullfighting, the second one deals with bulls themselves, and the third one with art related to bullfighting. The place turns out to be a real tribute to matadors such as El Viti, El Nino de la Capea and Julio Robles, all born in Salamanca.

Church of St. John the Baptist of Barbalos

The simplicity of Romanesque architecture
Plaza de San Juan Bautista, 1
Salamanca 37002
Spain
In a little square of the same name, in a district which is full of people going round the bars drinking, you will find this simple little church founded in 1150 by the Castilian repobladores (Christians who returned to the city after the moors were expelled). Outside you'll see the apse enhanced by three windows, and an original door with trumpet-shaped glass panels lighting up the inside. You mustn't miss the two 15th and 16th statues of Our Lady, and the enormous Romanesque crucifix, which is almost 2 meters high and very basic.

House of Doña María la Brava

Castilian Gothic mansion
Plaza de los Bandos, 7
Salamanca 37002
Spain
In the Plaza de los Bandos, very close to the Plaza Mayor, stands a 15th century Gothic mansion which belonged to Doña María de Monroy, dubbed la Brava because she was the heroine of one of the most tragic events in local history. After her two sons were killed by a rival gang she went after the murderers, not stopping until she had placed their heads on her sons' graves. On the façade, as is customary for Castilian noblemen's houses, there is a gate with a semi-circular arch with large keystones and a balcony with metal railings, which dates from the 18th century, flanked by the shields of noblemen. The house is not open to the public, as it belongs to the Official College of Pharmacists.

La Glorieta Bull Ring

Great bullfights
Plaza de la Glorieta
Salamanca 37003
Spain
+34 923 22 1299
The Glorieta bull ring in Salamanca was built in 1892 and officially opened on September 11th, 1893. It's classical in style, and has three levels, made of stone, wrought-iron and brick. The ring is 54 metres in diameter, and there's seating for almost 11000 spectators. There are two main times of year for seeing a good bullfight in Salamanca: June 12th for the feast of San Juan de Sahagun, with the traditional Las Hermanitas de los Pobres bullfight (held since 1947 with a view to raising funds for that institution), and September 12th to 21st (except on Sept 20th) during Salamanca's big fiesta.

Plaza Mayor

The most beautiful public space in Spain
Salamanca, Salamanca 37001
Spain
+34 923 21 8342 (Tourist Information)
Built between 1729 and 1755, the square is the city's central attraction, a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture. Behind the impressive arches, there are numerous bars and cafés with terraces in the summer to enjoy daily city life passing by. It's an irregular square surrounded by three floors of buildings with symmetrical balconies above 88 semi-circular arches supported by solid stone pillars. The Royal Pavilion and the town hall are located here. There are decorative moldings that depict famous people who are somehow related to the city.

San Marcos Church

Cicular Romanesque building
Plaza de San Marcos, s/n
Salamanca 37002
Spain
At the Zamora Gate, one of the many gates in the medieval wall, stands this lovely Romanesque church whose origin dates back to the replobladores of Salamanca, Don Ramón of Burgundy and Doña Urraca of Castile. Its main feature is its round structure. It has semicircular apses, and during restoration two primitive altars with Gothic friezes, decorating the main part of the church, were discovered. There's also a lovely 16th-century statue of Our Lady.
