Thousands of travelers descend upon Salt Lake City every day. Most already have a good idea of whether they will be sleeping under the covers at a plush hotel, or making their bed under a blanket of stars. The supply of comfortable rooms in Salt Lake City's high-rise hotels is ample, and is complemented by the many camping spots on the outskirts of the city. If you are looking for a room with a view, level ground to pitch a tent or anything in-between, you will find it in Salt Lake City.

Downtown

Of the many hotels that compose the Salt Lake City skyline, perhaps there are none imbedded into the fabric of the city deeper than Little America Hotel and Towers. The 850 rooms at this local favorite are comfortably spacious, and rooms in the 17-story tower are 600 square feet and include a parlor with a couch, table and work desk. Little America is sensitive to every travelers need. For the businessperson each room is equipped with two line phones. For the couple seeking a romantic get-away, every room has a large bathroom with an oversized Italian marble tub. After emerging from the tub relax in the complimentary plush terry robes. Other hotel facilities include a business center, health club, fitness center, whirlpool, sauna, outdoor pool and the largest indoor-outdoor swimming pool in the state. Everything about the hotel reveals its classy style, from the people to the intimate setting rooms and restaurants. Little America is the largest hotel in Utah.

The Downtown area is filled with quality hotels. For the traveler who places a high price on convenience, the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown is hotel gold. It is connected to a 145-store shopping mall across the street from the Salt Palace Convention Center, just half a block from Temple Square and two blocks from the Delta Center. The Hilton Salt Lake City will try its best to keep you inside with its many restaurants, shops, business and fitness centers, private lounge and concerts. If you are looking to pack lighter you should be aware that the Wyndham Hotel stocks each room with an ironing board, iron, coffee maker and hairdryer. For those who enjoy ready-to-go breakfast in the morning and complimentary drinks at night, Embassy Suites Downtown Salt Lake City has your room waiting. Your best bet for a room with a balcony is at Cavanaugh's Olympus Hotel. The University Park Marriott, near the campus of the University of Utah, offers breathtaking views, especially from the rooms facing west.

Airport

If you have an extended lay-over from Salt Lake International Airport, or perhaps just like to stay as close to the airport as possible, there are several lodges a scant mile away at International Center. At International Center you will find the Salt Lake Airport Hilton, the Sheraton Salt Lake Airport Hotel and the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Airport. You can catch a taxi or shuttle at the airport and be checked in within minutes. If you do decide to go out on the town, Downtown Salt Lake City lies 10 minutes east.

Inns and B&Bs

Bed-and-breakfasts are more popular in Salt Lake City than coffee shops. That is not good news for the hardcore coffee connoisseur, but it is great for those who want breakfast in bed. For those who prefer a traditional, elegant bed-and-breakfast, The Armstrong Mansion is a Victorian house featuring 13 rooms, each decorated for a different month of the year. The Carlton Hotel and the Inn at Temple Square flaunt both European-style and downtown locations. The Inn on Capitol Hill has a theme traditional to Utah, with decor tracing a historical narrative from the first explorers, to the pioneers, to statehood and everything in-between. At the you can sleep in the King's Lodge or other Renaissance inspired theme rooms. If you are looking to disappear into your own tiny world for a night, or perhaps feeling a bit adventurous, you will absolutely fall in love with the Anniversary Inn. They are touted as theme rooms, but from the moment you step inside you are in a different world. The Treasure Island room is modeled after a pirate ship, guests in the Swiss Family Robinson room should be prepared to sleep in a "tree" and the Lake Powell room is surrounded in red rocks, with a waterfall for a bath.

Ski and Resort

Some of the nicest lodging in the area is found in the surrounding hills. Every state has its capitol, every king has his castle and every ski resort has its own impressive lodge. A wonderful vacation awaits, with skiing by day and partaking of the resort amenities by night. Lodges huddle around all of the area's major ski resorts.

Homestead Resort, although not a ski resort, is also located in the mountains less than an hour from Downtown and has much to offer, including an 18-hole golf course, hot springs and pool, cross-country skiing and sleigh rides, snowmobile riding and fine restaurants. Lodging is found here in the form of a bed-and-breakfast, executive suites or family cottages.

Although there are additional smaller hotels and motels throughout the Salt Lake Valley, there are three major spots where you can find several congregated within a small area, the closest is 10 minutes from Downtown in West Valley, adjacent to the E-Center; the second, 20 minutes from Downtown in Sandy, around 106000 South and State Street; the last is 30 minutes east of Downtown in Park City, particularly along Sidewinder Drive.

Downtown

Salt Lake City
United States
The downtown area is a mixture of contrasts that situates the most modern of sports arenas, the Delta Center, across the street from the Devereaux Mansion (a fine old Victorian mansion that is now a restaurant). The stately Temple Square is flanked by high-rise office buildings and the modern Crossroads Plaza shopping center. Brigham Young's Beehive House creates a 19th-century oasis across the street from 21st-century office towers. Arranged on a logical grid pattern with Temple Square at its center, all addresses in the city can be found with little effort. Salt Lake City has been described as "visionary, vibrant, and vigorous." Business and tourism are the lifeblood of the city, but between the office buildings lay the cultural and entertainment centers that present numerous diversions at the end of the business or ski day.

University of Utah

Salt Lake City
United States
The university district and the university itself offer a number of delights. On the campus of the University of Utah are the Utah Museum of Natural History and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Newly remodeled Kingsbury Hall is a concert and performance venue that is a special pleasure for jazz performances, dance productions and theatre. The University's Huntsman Center hosts the sporting exhibitions of the University of Utah Utes, while the nearby Red Butte Gardens is a four-season experience that, once again, integrates the city with Utah's diverse natural environment.
