Among the seemingly endless Christmas-themed musical events taking place every December in Salzburg is this performance, from which all proceeds go to local charities. Organized by and for the benefit of the Salzburg National Aid, the event features traditional Austrian music and dance, along with a charming variety of plays commemorating Jesus' birth. This less lavish, more community-oriented Christmas event offers perhaps a truer picture of Salzburg society; eight performances over three days are held at the Großer Saal at the Mozarteum in the Old Town. Although the Salzburger Kunstverein was one of the first institutions of its kind founded by artists and friends in 1844, it is definitely one of the most interesting places dealing with contemporary international and national art. Beyond the exhibition room the building constructed 1885 houses a small café where visitors can meet artists working in the ateliers situated in the mansion. A few years ago, the Casino of Salzburg moved from the top of the Mönchsberg to its present home in the Kleßheim Castle. You can get here using the shuttle bus that leaves regularly from Mirabellplatz. The cash desk is in the foyer, and there is also a cash machine (for those requiring some more cash to play with) and a restaurant on the ground floor. The main central area on the first floor houses a handful of roulette tables and on the left-side of these are the Black Jack tables. The new premises make for an excellent and exciting experience. Ever since the Cineplexx Entertainment Centre opened its doors right next to the Salzburg Airport, it has attracted hundreds and thousands of visitors every day. More than 18 up to date movies flicker across the huge screens here every day. The halls are extremely large, but still very comfortable (the seats are the best!). Unfortunately the Cineplexx is rather hard to reach, as it is quite a way away from the city centre. But it's the worth the journey, as you can spend the whole evening there. Amongst Salzburg's four main screens, Das Kino is arguably the most atypical when it comes to its programme. Whilst the other three cinemas churn out for the most part the same old Hollywood blockbusters, Das Kino busies itself with selecting films of interest from the world over, often shown in the original language. The only compromises made to modernity have been technical consolidation and the renovation and enlargement of its rather diminutive rooms a few years ago. The old Petersbrunnerhof is once again buzzing with life. A few years ago, a successful and self-supportive theatre group opened its doors here. The Elisabethbühne stages modern pieces, as well as classic plays from way back yonder, "Mephisto" for instance. The central location in Nonntal is a big bonus for this semi-fledgling stage. Over the last few years the theatre has become well known for its highly acclaimed plays for children. But, the more serious plays have also been praised by the critics. Since the mega cinema Cineplexx has opened it's doors in Salzburg, the smaller city cinemas have struggles to fill their halls. The Elmo, next to the Lehener bridge on the Salzach, offers various cheap entrance fees on certain weekdays. Visitors can really get some profit out of this, just call before you go to the cinema and ask for the weekly "cheap days." Especially interesting for English speaking visitors is the so called "Sneak Preview" every Tuesday—that is a new movie in the English original version. The "Gallery Weihergut" is most certainly the most acclaimed gallery Salzburg has to offer. The gallery is a piece of art in itself - a modern gallery-passage, a futuristic pavilion in an old courtyard and a stable that was transformed into an exhibition room with a lot of skill and class. Examining art in an artful surrounding, what more can you ask for? Every year in October the sleepy little village of Hallein, located some 10km south of Salzburg, is invaded by thousands of revelers. Founded in 1988, the Hallein International Folk Festival is now the biggest event of its kind in the country. Not all festival-goers are folk music aficionados though, and plenty of people are just here for a good time. A series of concerts originally called 'Jazz in the Theatre' took place at the Elizabeth Theatre, hence the name. In 2002 a venue called Jazzit opened its doors near the main station. The Salzburger Festspiele - Salzburg's legendary festival, took place for the first time in 1920. And in the same year, the premier of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 'Jedermann' (Everyman: The Life and Death of a Rich Man) was first performed in front of Salzburg Cathedral. The play has been a staple part of the Festival ever since. The gruesomely beautiful tale of the plight of the human condition is honoured with the same venue and slot each year. Situated across from Mirabell Castle, this church has had its fair share of tumult over the years. The first building was ravaged by fire in 1818 and was torn down shortly thereafter. Though another church was constructed on the site, it was badly damaged during World War II, and the original Gothic design of the church was lost in the reconstruction that took place after that. Nowadays, the twin spires and distinctive red roof make it stand out as a recognizable landmark in Salzburg's cityscape. By far and away Salzburg's best-known theatre, the Landestheater stages elaborate productions of classic works as well as more contemporary pieces. The Mozart Dinner Concert is held in the atmospheric, baroque vaults of St Peter's Abbey. The Mozart Cinema is barely holding its head above the water at the moment. The huge cinema complex "Cineplexx" is stealing a lot of visitors from the smaller houses. But the Mozart Cinema is special in its own way. Two small film halls create a very cosy watching atmosphere. Especially the smaller hall of the two, which is, actually, merely a room, is well worth a visit. It gives a convenient break from sitting in a hall with more than 200 people. There are normally only 4 films showing, but these are pretty much up to date. Drinks and snacks are provided by a small bar and the traditional pop-corn kiosk. Republic is an institution in Salzburg's nightlife with its great multicultural parties and concerts. Up to the 19th Century the Archbishops of Salzburg held court in the Residenz. Nowadays the vast complex serves the municipal government for receptions and meetings. Within these buildings, the Residence Gallery, maintained by Salzburg province has opened its collection of European Art for visitors. Masterpieces by Rembrandt, Rubens, Brueghel, and Italian and French painters give a survey of the whole of European painting. The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded in 1967 by the late and great conductor Herbert von Karajan. Home to Mozart, Karajan and "The Sound of Music," Salzburg can truly claim to be one of the most musical cities in the world. Filmed in Salzburg in 1964, "The Sound of Music" has become synonymous with the city, with some 70 per cent of all tourists admitting that Julie Andrews and the von Trapp family were one of the main reasons for their visit. A host of enterprises opened up on the back of the film's success, the most endearing of which is the Sound of Music Show. The show begins with a film interview with the real Frau von Trapp recounting her family's true story. Guests then dig into a hearty, four-course meal accompanied by a local band playing a somewhat bizarre mix of Alpine folk songs and classical pieces by Mozart and others. By the time the coffee comes though, the band is thrashing out classic singalong pieces like "The Hills are Alive," "Do-Re-Mi" and "Edelweiss." A bizarre mixture of cinema, concerts and sporting events like boxing took place in the modest building in the heart of the city until 1985. Then the Szene-Festival, a sort of alternative to the Salzburg Festival, started with events claiming to change to avantgarde and experiment in art, music, theatre, concerts, cabaret and above all dance. Events have taken place throughout the year here since 1993. The mixture of events offers a lot of opportunities to be entertained in the true sense of the word and to get an overview of different contemporary areas of art. Review © 2007, Wcities |
