By far and away Salzburg's best-known theatre, the Landestheater stages elaborate productions of classic works as well as more contemporary pieces. Annual productions range from Opera to Ballet, musical theatre and productions for young people. With high stucco ceilings, plush red carpets, winding staircases, stunning boxes and enormous chandeliers, the interior is exactly what one would expect from such a highly-renowned establishment. The theatre also serves as one of the venues for the Salzburg Festspiele. Tickets cost from EUR 8 to EUR 50 depending on the production.

The modern architecture and interior has been designed to host various kinds of events, from international trade fairs, to music festivals to sports and concerts. From Grease, the musical, to Lord of The Dance, from André Rieu to the National Chinese Circus, there is plenty to please the whole family.

The Salzburg Festival is known throughout the world for its high caliber operas, plays and concerts. Each festival is accompanied by heated discussions on a variety of cultural issues, though there is no doubting the sheer brilliance of most of the productions. First held in 1920, it features performances by some of the biggest names in classical music, opera and theatre, and draws tens of thousands of culture-vultures to Salzburg every summer. Regular venues include the Großes Festspielhaus, Kleines Festspielhaus, Landestheater and Mozarteum. The hours of operation vary with the events. The Salzburg Festival takes place every summer in July and August.

The Kulturvereinigung, Salzburg's leading cultural association, organizes an array of cultural events throughout the year. Its program includes theatre, opera, ballet and classical music productions by ensembles and orchestras of the highest international renown. Events take place in the Landestheater, Großes Festspielhaus and Mozarteum. The highlight of the year is the Salzburger Kulturtage festival every October. Admission rates are: EUR 23-41.

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre has been in existence nearly 90 years. Established in 1913, the Marionette Theatre acts as a small opera house for great operas. "The Bat" by Johann Strauss is in the repertoire as are operas by Rossini and ballet by Offenbach. About 160 performances a year take place in the baroque style theatre. But, the puppets on strings are not just stars in Salzburg, they perform all over the world from Paris to Tokyo.
