As Salzburg is world famous for its Festival of theatre, opera and classical music there is a general emphasis on such events during the whole year. Besides the Festival in summer there are a series of events around Easter and Whitsun and there are events at the Great Festival Hall throughout the year. During the Mozart week in January, the Altes Mozarteum is the venue with the busiest schedule and during Christmassy lyrical drama staged in the Great Festival Hall. Although Salzburg is a historic town, there are also rock, pop and jazz concerts, as well as numerous cinemas and bars. If you are looking for discos and large entertainment centres, then this is not a good place to search though.

Theatres, Museums and Galleries

The Salzburger Landestheater at the Makartplatz stages performances throughout the year. Further performances are held at the Kammerspiele and the Elisabethb¨¹hne and the Toi Haus both focus on modern/contemporary plays. During Festival time in the summer, the Felsenreitschule becomes a further theatre venue and the playJedermann attracts a large crowd to the square in front of the cathedral, where it is acted out. If it rains, you could use the weather as an excuse to visit museums such as the Haus der Natur, a natural history museum or the Carolino Augusteum, which concentrates on local history and culture. Modern art and photography lovers would be advised to the Rupertinum. Adults and children alike will enjoy the city's Toy Museum which is housed in the premises of the B¨¹rgerspital, a former hospital.

Cinemas

Salzburg's largest cinematic complex is on the outskirts near the airport. The Cineplexx has six state-of-the-art cinemas with modern sound systems. You can watch the latest Hollywood imports. The largest cinema in Salzburg is the Elmo Kino, near the big bridge that spans the Salzach in the Lehen district. If you are in the Old Town, you could visit the Mozartkino, a small, old-fashioned cinema. There is also Das Kino, near the Staatsbr¨¹cke, which screens small-budget, independent and foreign language films.

Music

Salzburg is a city with a close connection to the world of classical music and the Salzburg Festival, held every summer, is of course world-famous. As mentioned above, there are events throughout the year in the Great Festival Hall and in autumn, there is the Salzburger Jazzherbst, when smooth jazz accompanies the changing weather. The Great Hall of the Altes Mozarteum is a further venue. If you like chamber music then why not visit one of the 5pm concerts at the Michael Haydn Memorial?. If you would like to hear Mozart's music in the town in which he is born, but can't find a concert that suits your tastes, you could go to the Mozart sound and film archives. The Rockhouse, is the place to head for rock, pop and jazz concerts. Live concerts are held here on an almost daily basis. The Kulturgel?nde Nonntal hosts similar events and if you like pub gigs then go to the Shamrock, which is a popular Irish pub near the Staatsbr¨¹cke. If you like easy-listening music or jazz you should go to the Altstadtkeller at the Rudolfskai.

Nightlife

To talk about nightlife in Salzburg is to exaggerate, at least compared to cities like Munich and Vienna. Nonetheless, there are some noteworthy pubs like the Bierklinik and the Hell at the Rudolfskai. On the opposite side of the river Salzach there is the Watzmann and in the Steingasse the Fridrichs or the Shrimpsbar are worth visiting. They are very good watering holes!

From here it's only a short walk to the Pepe Gonzales, which as its name suggests, was inspired by South America. You could also go to the Steinsitz. In the Gst?ttengasse and the Tapa Sita and the American bar Flip are situated at the bottom of the M?nchsberg.

Altes Mozarteum

The famous music academy's building
Schwarzstraße 26
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 889400
This building was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum. Today, it is mainly used by the Mozarteum music academy. There are teaching and practice rooms and two concert halls. In the 'Großer Saal' (large concert hall) concerts with international performers are often held. In the second half of January there are the concerts that are part the 'Mozartwoche' (Mozart week). If you want to visit this building be discreet. The porter doesn't like tourists walking around inside. But if you are not in a group, just enter and walk straight up to the first and second floor where you can hear students practising and you can get a taste the Mozarteum's atmosphere.

One of Salzburg's best-known nightlife haunts, Bräu zur frommen Hell is a traditional establishment located near Rudolfskai. Customers can choose from a wide variety of drinks, the local brew (Stiegl Beer) being especially good. The crowd is generally on the young side (18-30) and the music is loud and up-to-date. The most appealing part of the bar is the cellar, which contains a number of cosy tables where people can sit and chat.

Ever since the Cineplexx Entertainment Centre opened its doors right next to the Salzburg Airport, it has attracted hundreds and thousands of visitors every day. More than 18 up to date movies flicker across the huge screens here every day. The halls are extremely large, but still very comfortable (the seats are the best!). Unfortunately the Cineplexx is rather hard to reach, as it is quite a way away from the city centre. But it's the worth the journey, as you can spend the whole evening there. But careful - you might get caught in a bar before you even see the movie!!!

Since the mega cinema Cineplexx has opened it's doors in Salzburg, the smaller city cinemas have struggles to fill their halls. The Elmo, next to the Lehener bridge on the Salzach, offers various cheap entrance fees on certain weekdays. Visitors can really get some profit out of this, just call before you go to the cinema and ask for the weekly "cheap days." Especially interesting for English speaking visitors is the so called "Sneak Preview" every Tuesday—that is a new movie in the English original version. Admission: EUR 7; reduced rates for students, cheap days EUR5.

Flip Cocktail Bar

A Salzburg Cult - Bar
Gstättengasse 17
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 843643
The "Flip" is rather famous in Salzburg. Especially in summer the beautiful garden in front of the bar, with a direct view onto the "Anton Neumayr Square" attracts a large number of visitors to the vicinity of the pub. The combination of urban air and alcohol also works in Salzburg, obviously! But the interior of the small place is also very notable. Compact round tables and leather seats just call out for guests to sit down and have a cocktail or two. Of course the bar also offers non-alcoholic drinks, as well as all the normal and traditional bar offerings. But the cocktails, mixed by the friendly and professional bar staff, are well worth a try. Musically speaking the "Flip" is rather "grungy", but request are always welcome. An ideal hang-out for young and young feeling people.

Gstättengasse

Narrow historic alley in the Old Town
Gstättengasse
Salzburg 5020
Austria
This narrow alley begins at the Anton-Neumayr-Platz and runs along the Mönchsberg to the Klausentor which used to be a town gate. Most of the buildings in this alley date back to the 16th and 17th century but many of them were actually destroyed during a rock fall in 1669 when more than 200 people were killed. Since then climbers remove loose stones from the rock face during the Spring to prevent them from falling down.

Anton Neumayr Platz is the hub of Salzburg's nightlife, a melting pot of bars, restaurants, clubs and cafés. The Humboldtstubn is a nice restaurant with a bar at the foyer. In the summer guests can sit out on the terrace and watch the world go by, inside there are rustic wooden tables. The menu offers Austrian and international dishes. A great little place.

The Salzburger Festspiele - Salzburg's legendary festival, took place for the first time in 1920. And in the same year, the premier of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 'Jedermann' (Everyman: The Life and Death of a Rich Man) was first performed in front of Salzburg Cathedral. The play has been a staple part of the Festival ever since. The gruesomely beautiful tale of the plight of the human condition is honoured with the same venue and slot each year. A must for all those in town during the festival.

The Mozart sound and film archive is situated in Mozart's house at the Makartplatz, which is also known as the 'Tanzmeisterhaus'. These archives are a part of the Iinternational Mozarteum Foundation and are of interest not only to academics but alsoto those with an interest in classical music. The rather plain entrance to the archives can be found on the right side of the inner court. The employees are friendly and willing to help. There are several places where you can make use of audiovisual equipment to learn about Mozart via sound and film. This should definitely be a stop-off for those that are eager to learn more about the city's most famous son.

An integral part of Salzburg's nightlife, the Shamrock is an elegant fusion of traditional Irish features and more modern European elements. The bar is a popular meeting place for young and old, and live bands also appear regularly, with an in-house DJ filling any gaps in the line-up. The back part of the pub contains several tables, where customers can sit and have a chat in more sedate surroundings. Besides the usual selection of (Irish & Austrian) drinks, the Shamrock serves up a fine selection of pizza and sandwiches.

Upon entering the Steingasse you'll find an unassuming little place to your left. The first thing to catch your eye is a big porcelain beast of prey sitting in the window, whilst music drifts out onto the street from the open door. This tiny location - a wonderful mixture of bar, restaurant, gallery, music-café and café - was the first in Salzburg which succeeded in offering a kind of easy-going lifestyle. Jazz music, delicious wines, and art on the walls all add to the atmosphere in this restaurant. Perhaps not for big dinners and lunches, it is great for enjoying small dishes such as seafood, salads, and soups and enjoying life by reading one of the art journals.

Stein Alley

Medieval ambience
Steingasse
Salzburg 5020
Austria
Long long ago under Roman rule, the Steingasse was one of the two main imperial roads in this area along with the Linzergasse. In the Middle Ages, this was the busy centre of brewers, potters, dyers and tanners. Nowadays nothing remains. The last small stores closed several years ago. The Steingasse, however, is slowly becoming the address for specialists. Tiny but excellent bars, a wonderful second hand bookshop, a shop with delicious wines and others, they are all establishing the atmosphere of an exclusive yet calm dreamland.

The Toy Museum in the Carolino Augusteum caters to these needs with a broad collection of dolls, teddies, puppets, wooden and pewter toys and a fine display of arts and crafts. This part of the museum is situated in St. Blaise Civic Hospital, built between 1556-62 in the Mönchsberg. A visit here is great for both children and adults.
