The famous music academy's building |
Schwarzstraße 26 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 889400 |
This building was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum. Today, it is mainly used by the Mozarteum music academy. There are teaching and practice rooms and two concert halls. In the 'Großer Saal' (large concert hall) concerts with international performers are often held. In the second half of January there are the concerts that are part the 'Mozartwoche' (Mozart week). If you want to visit this building be discreet. The porter doesn't like tourists walking around inside. But if you are not in a group, just enter and walk straight up to the first and second floor where you can hear students practising and you can get a taste the Mozarteum's atmosphere. Legendary local brew |
Rudolfskai 26 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 840075 |
One of Salzburg's best-known nightlife haunts, Bräu zur frommen Hell is a traditional establishment located near Rudolfskai. Customers can choose from a wide variety of drinks, the local brew (Stiegl Beer) being especially good. The crowd is generally on the young side (18-30) and the music is loud and up-to-date. The most appealing part of the bar is the cellar, which contains a number of cosy tables where people can sit and chat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stylish cinema near the airport |
Kasernenstraße 5a Salzburg 5073 Austria +43 662 8501010 http://www.cineplexx.at |
Ever since the Cineplexx Entertainment Centre opened its doors right next to the Salzburg Airport, it has attracted hundreds and thousands of visitors every day. More than 18 up to date movies flicker across the huge screens here every day. The halls are extremely large, but still very comfortable (the seats are the best!). Unfortunately the Cineplexx is rather hard to reach, as it is quite a way away from the city centre. But it's the worth the journey, as you can spend the whole evening there. But careful - you might get caught in a bar before you even see the movie!!! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive cinema |
St. Julien Straße 5 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 8723730 http://www.elmokino.at/ |
Since the mega cinema Cineplexx has opened it's doors in Salzburg, the smaller city cinemas have struggles to fill their halls. The Elmo, next to the Lehener bridge on the Salzach, offers various cheap entrance fees on certain weekdays. Visitors can really get some profit out of this, just call before you go to the cinema and ask for the weekly "cheap days." Especially interesting for English speaking visitors is the so called "Sneak Preview" every Tuesday—that is a new movie in the English original version. Admission: EUR 7; reduced rates for students, cheap days EUR5. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Salzburg Cult - Bar |
Gstättengasse 17 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 843643 |
The "Flip" is rather famous in Salzburg. Especially in summer the beautiful garden in front of the bar, with a direct view onto the "Anton Neumayr Square" attracts a large number of visitors to the vicinity of the pub. The combination of urban air and alcohol also works in Salzburg, obviously! But the interior of the small place is also very notable. Compact round tables and leather seats just call out for guests to sit down and have a cocktail or two. Of course the bar also offers non-alcoholic drinks, as well as all the normal and traditional bar offerings. But the cocktails, mixed by the friendly and professional bar staff, are well worth a try. Musically speaking the "Flip" is rather "grungy", but request are always welcome. An ideal hang-out for young and young feeling people. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Narrow historic alley in the Old Town |
Gstättengasse Salzburg 5020 Austria |
This narrow alley begins at the Anton-Neumayr-Platz and runs along the Mönchsberg to the Klausentor which used to be a town gate. Most of the buildings in this alley date back to the 16th and 17th century but many of them were actually destroyed during a rock fall in 1669 when more than 200 people were killed. Since then climbers remove loose stones from the rock face during the Spring to prevent them from falling down. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tapas and people-watching |
Gstättengasse 4-6 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 843171 |
Anton Neumayr Platz is the hub of Salzburg's nightlife, a melting pot of bars, restaurants, clubs and cafés. The Humboldtstubn is a nice restaurant with a bar at the foyer. In the summer guests can sit out on the terrace and watch the world go by, inside there are rustic wooden tables. The menu offers Austrian and international dishes. A great little place. An integral part of the Salzburg Festival |
Domplatz Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 804 5500 (Kartenbüro / ticket office) |
The Salzburger Festspiele - Salzburg's legendary festival, took place for the first time in 1920. And in the same year, the premier of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 'Jedermann' (Everyman: The Life and Death of a Rich Man) was first performed in front of Salzburg Cathedral. The play has been a staple part of the Festival ever since. The gruesomely beautiful tale of the plight of the human condition is honoured with the same venue and slot each year. A must for all those in town during the festival. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Schwarzstraße 24 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 871512222 http://www.salzburger-landesth... |
By far and away Salzburg's best-known theatre, the Landestheater stages elaborate productions of classic works as well as more contemporary pieces. Annual productions range from Opera to Ballet, musical theatre and productions for young people. With high stucco ceilings, plush red carpets, winding staircases, stunning boxes and enormous chandeliers, the interior is exactly what one would expect from such a highly-renowned establishment. The theatre also serves as one of the venues for the Salzburg Festspiele. Tickets cost from EUR 8 to EUR 50 depending on the production. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The festival hall |
Hofstallgasse Salzburg 5010 Austria +43 662 849097 |
The larger of Salzburg's two festival halls (with a capacity of over 2,000), the Großes Festspielhaus was designed by Clemens Holzmeister and opened by master conductor Herbert von Karajan in 1960. The festival hall was built to host the world-famous Salzburg Festival, but it is also used as a venue for many of Salzburg's other festivals like the Easter Festival, Whitsun Festival and Advent Concerts. The festival hall also hosts numerous operas and concerts outside of the festival season. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Archives on Mozart |
Makartplatz 8 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 883454 http://www.mozarteum.at/03_Wis... |
The Mozart sound and film archive is situated in Mozart's house at the Makartplatz, which is also known as the 'Tanzmeisterhaus'. These archives are a part of the Iinternational Mozarteum Foundation and are of interest not only to academics but alsoto those with an interest in classical music. The rather plain entrance to the archives can be found on the right side of the inner court. The employees are friendly and willing to help. There are several places where you can make use of audiovisual equipment to learn about Mozart via sound and film. This should definitely be a stop-off for those that are eager to learn more about the city's most famous son. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dance the night away |
Steingasse 3 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 873662 |
This friendly little Mexican bar offers fun and frolics until the early hours. Loud, colourful and lively, Pepe is one of the best places in town for an up-beat evening. Guests can choose from a variety of Mexican snacks and drinks (including a deadly fire water), and most people will end up dancing the night away on the tiny little dance floor. Great fun! Advent concerts |
Residenzplatz 9 Salzburg A-5020 Austria +43 662 844110 http://www.salzburgeradventsin... |
Salzburg is at its most atmospheric during the festive holiday season. The Advent Concerts take place every year in the Großes Festspielhaus and are widely regarded as the cultural highlight of the Christmas season. The concerts feature a mix of folk music and traditional theatre and recount the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Because the event is often sold out months beforehand, advance bookings should be made in the Salzburger Heimatwerk. Call for performance details. admission: EUR 10-49 Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste of Ireland |
Rudolfskai 12 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 841610 http://www.shamrocksalzburg.com/ |
An integral part of Salzburg's nightlife, the Shamrock is an elegant fusion of traditional Irish features and more modern European elements. The bar is a popular meeting place for young and old, and live bands also appear regularly, with an in-house DJ filling any gaps in the line-up. The back part of the pub contains several tables, where customers can sit and have a chat in more sedate surroundings. Besides the usual selection of (Irish & Austrian) drinks, the Shamrock serves up a fine selection of pizza and sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Music, art, coffee and food |
Steingasse 5 Salzburg A-5020 Austria +43 662 874484 http://www.shrimps.at/ |
Upon entering the Steingasse you'll find an unassuming little place to your left. The first thing to catch your eye is a big porcelain beast of prey sitting in the window, whilst music drifts out onto the street from the open door. This tiny location - a wonderful mixture of bar, restaurant, gallery, music-café and café - was the first in Salzburg which succeeded in offering a kind of easy-going lifestyle. Jazz music, delicious wines, and art on the walls all add to the atmosphere in this restaurant. Perhaps not for big dinners and lunches, it is great for enjoying small dishes such as seafood, salads, and soups and enjoying life by reading one of the art journals. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Medieval ambience |
Steingasse Salzburg 5020 Austria |
Long long ago under Roman rule, the Steingasse was one of the two main imperial roads in this area along with the Linzergasse. In the Middle Ages, this was the busy centre of brewers, potters, dyers and tanners. Nowadays nothing remains. The last small stores closed several years ago. The Steingasse, however, is slowly becoming the address for specialists. Tiny but excellent bars, a wonderful second hand bookshop, a shop with delicious wines and others, they are all establishing the atmosphere of an exclusive yet calm dreamland. Museum of toys |
Bürgerspitalgasse 2 Salzburg 5020 Austria +43 662 620808-300 http://www.smca.at/spielzeugmu... |
Toys are not just children's playthings—they can also cater to human beings' basic needs. The Toy Museum in the Carolino Augusteum caters to these needs with a broad collection of dolls, teddies, puppets, wooden and pewter toys and a fine display of arts and crafts. This part of the museum is situated in St. Blaise Civic Hospital, built between 1556-62 in the Mönchsberg. A visit here is great for both children and adults. Review © 2007, Wcities |
