Anyone who starts to explore Salzburg gastronomically will come across a host of cafes in the Old Town, good restaurants and a number of beautiful beer gardens.

Cafes and Coffee Houses

There are only two places that fall into the category of coffee houses, but they are real classics. You can find the Cafe Tomaselli at the Alter Markt (Old Market) in the Old Town. You can easily spend an afternoon here reading the latest newspapers (including the International Herald Tribune) and drinking your coffee. This cafe has the same atmosphere as one of Vienna's famous coffee houses. In summer you can sit outside (on the balcony) and enjoy marvellous views of the Old Town. The Bazar, another traditional coffee house near the river Salzach near the Staatsbr¨¹cke was writer Thomas Bernhard's favourite haunt. It is still a favourite with intellectuals and people like artists and professors (from the nearby Mozaerteum Academy of Music), as well as employees from banks and offices in the neighbourhood can be found here throughout the day. The Cafe F¨¹rst, which claims to have invented the 'Mozartkugel' (the world-famous chocolate ball), is also a good choice but there are lots of cosy cafes to choose from in the in the Old Town. Some of them have their own confectionery brands, one example being the Konditorei Schatz, which is located in a passage between the Universit?tsplatz and the Getreidegasse. Outside the town centre, in an area called '?u?erer Stein', the Ratzka is very popular, not least because of its delicious baking. Some cooking magazines claim it makes some of the best cakes in Austria. The Strasser is a good place to eat gateau's and Cafe Silvia is also a favourite teatime haunt. On the other side of the river Salzach you can choose between the Cafe Pamina, which is near the near the Mozartplatz, and the Cafe Stein, which is a must in the summer. Guests at this caf¨¦ have excellent views of the historic Old Town on a clear day.

Beer Pubs and Beer Gardens

The most famous brewery in Salzburg is the 'Stiegl Brauerei', which has its own exhibition. Visitors can learn about the art of beer brewing. The Stiegl beer cellar where you can sample the Stiegl beer, is situated near the Festung Hohensalzburg and is always a good choice. In the summer, you can make use of the leafy beer garden, from which you and watch what is going on in the Old Town. The M¨¹llner Br?u, which is also called Augustiner Br?u is frequented by the M¨¹lln area's locals and the dining halls here can accommodate up to 3000 people. In addition to this, the M¨¹llner Bra has a beer garden which also has facilities for up to 2000 people. If you are looking for something more intimate, then there is a Andr? neighbourhood called 'Die Wei?e'. As the beer garden here is not too big, it does tend to get rather overcrowded in the summer months so you may wish to go to Raschhofers Rossbr?u, which is situated in the Herrnau shopping-centre. Most of the beers here come from Upper Austria and this region's beers can also be sampled at theInnviertler which is also in the Andr? neighbourhood. Another option for those that want a cosy pub, is the Fidele Affe near the Linzer Gasse.

Austrian and Regional Dishes

If you would like to try local food then you could go to the Krimpelst?tter, which is in the district M¨¹lln, next to the M¨¹llner Br?u. Or, you could try the Stiftskeller St. Peter. Although this is quite touristy, it is worth a visit, if only because it is located in the grounds of St. Peter's monastery. The Kohlpeter restaurant Liefering is fairly central but it has a country-feel to it.

Other Culinary Discoveries

Salzburg also has a range of international restaurants, such as the Nagano. It is at this Japanese restaurant in the Getreidegasse that you can get the best sushi in town. Besides, the fact that you can always find Japanese tourists in here must say something about the quality and authenticity of the place. Salzburg also has a quite a few Chinese restaurant, but you can only find the Chinatown in the Old Town. As far as Italian Restaurants go, most of these offer the usual pizzas and pastas. Nonetheless, the Pan e Vin in the Gst?ttengasse stands out in that it also offers modern Italian cuisine. If you like Turkish food, go to Osmans Spezialit?ten in the Linzer Gasse. Late night hunger pangs should vanish after a visit to Steirische Weinstuben. The place is sometimes regarded as being a little bit sleazy but the grilled chicken, which you can order until 2am is legendary.

The hotel was built in the 1950s and something of this era can still be sensed in the atmosphere of both the hotel and cafe. Drinks, snacks and ice-creams are served at reasonable prices. To get to the cafe, you go through the hotel lobby, then take the lift to the rooftop.

Salzburg's most famous café

Austria

http://www.cafe-bazar.at
Cafe Bazar is the second most classic Viennese coffeehouse in Salzburg, following close behind Café Tomaselli. In the summer months, the combination of its location on the bank of Salzach River and its wonderful terrace mean brisk business for this cafe - it can be a bit of a challenge to get a seat. Yet in winter as well as summer, this elegant, spacious coffeehouse, with its high ceilings, is a haunt of students, actors, celebrities, shoppers, Salzburg's elderly and intellectuals. Naturally, a huge range of national and international newspapers are available daily. If the waiter is in some way unfriendly, relax, it's part of the experience.

Alter Markt is home to some of Salzburg's classiest cafés, one of which is this traditional establishment near the cathedral. Boasting a long and proud history, Café Fürst is spread over two floors, both of which are stylishly and comfortably furnished. The choice of food includes a number of savoury snacks, but Café Fürst is undoubtedly best known for its scrumptious home-made cakes and chocolates. All confectionery is made on the premises and Café Fürst is even credited with creating the legendary Mozart-Kugel.

Café Tomaselli

Café with tradition
Alter Markt 9
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 8444880
http://www.tomaselli.at
Cafe Tomaselli is a classic Viennese coffeehouse with an affiliated patisserie producing fine pastries and petit fours. It was in business as early as 1705, serving coffee, teas and homemade chocolate to its clientele who these days spend afternoons ambling through the many titles of the international press supplied by the coffeehouse. With wooden tables and a somewhat antiquated interior design, Cafe Tomaselli adopts an air of former times and maintains stylish surroundings in which to forget everyday stress. In the summer months, tables and chairs are set up outside lending a good view of the Old Market.

Die Weisse

The Weißbier Brewery's restaurant
Rupertgasse 10
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 8722460
Together with the Müllner Bräustübl and the Stiegl Keller, this is the most popular beer garden in town, especially for those with a penchant for Weißbier (white beer). In the summer months plenty of people drop by for an after-work drink and a bite to eat (goulash with noodles is especially popular). Rain is no object; the indoor bar offers a familiar, collegiate atmosphere. Groups should book in advance, and can even visit the historic "Small Brewery" by prior appointment.

Gasthof zum Fidelen Affen

The dancing monkey brings good food
Priesterhausgasse 8
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 877361
Austrian meals, prepared following old, traditional recipes, are extremely hard to find in Salzburg these days. Often restaurants advertising with these kinds of slogans turn out to be real tourist traps. But in the "Zum Fidelen Affen", which translated means "At the jolly monkey", this is not the case. Over the years the restaurant in a side street of the Linzer Gasse has become highly acclaimed among Salzburg inhabitants. And where the locals eat is where you get the local food, logically. Everything that is Austrian you can find on the menu, from good old roast pork to the well known Vienna Schnitzel, best enjoyed with a cool pint of beer. And all this is served quickly and is of very good quality. Austrians would say "mahlzeit" or "guten Appetit", we would say "Tuck in!"

Getreidegasse

Salzburg's most famous shopping street
Getreidegasse
Salzburg 5020
Austria
Salzburg´s Getreidegasse is the most famous street of the city, and therefore is the most crowded. If you are really interested in getting a view of the charming old houses it is recommended to visit it quite early, which means before 10a.m. Pretty portals and wonderful courtyards can only be seen and appreciated then. The Getreidegasse is famous for the wrought signs from the 16th to the 19th Centuries. The design of the signs dates back to the Middle Ages. It is worth taking a second look at the houses because they are adorned with dates, symbols or the names of their owners, so they often tell their own history.

A small passage from the Universitätsplatz 16 leads to the Getreidegasse. Here, you can find a cake shop on the left-hand side called Konditorei Schatz. Anyone that enters this lightly decorated cake shop will immediately catch a whiff of goodies being baked in the kitchen. The display counter is filled with cakes, tarts, gateaux and confectionery so that your choice will be difficult. If you are looking for the bathroom, go outside and up the stairs on the left hand of the entrance.

This ancient restaurant next to Müllner Bräustübl is a well-kept secret among visitors, but not with the locals. Known for its hospitality and tasty local specialties, this is one of the best places in town for traditional Salzburg cuisine. The schnitzel and weekly specials are particularly recommended. Many of these dishes are unique and it is well worth venturing here to sample them. The main restaurant is situated on the ground floor, while the function rooms occupy the first floor.

Mozart Square

Look into the eyes of Salzburg's composing genius
Mozartplatz
Salzburg 5020
Austria
Surrounded by the Residenzplatz, the Waagplatz and the Kaigasse the most famous son of Salzburg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, watches over his own square in the centre of the city. The Mozart statue that gave the square its name was erected in 1842. During the excavations for the monument, the workers found old Roman mosaics. Engraved on these was an ancient Roman text: "Hic habitas felicitas, nihil intret mali. - Here lives fortune, no evil shall ever pass this place." The building that Mozart turns his back on is the home that the cathedral architect Santino Solari built for himself.

Müllner Bräustübl

The monk's beer
Augustinergasse 4
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 4312460
Some say that monks always make the best beer. Whether or not this is true can be found out in the Bräustübl of the Augustinian Brewery that is still in the hands of the monastery. Many Salzburgers love this place and that makes it a hot tip for beer-crazy tourists. In summer the guests can sip at their ice cold beer, still served in old stone mugs (!) of ½ litre or 1 litre, in a huge, shady garden. And the beer is fairly cheap compared to others, which is very seldom in Salzburg! But it's not all about drinking, there are also a number of snack stalls that offer various Austrian specialities to stop the tummy from grumbling. If you should visit the brewery on a sunny day, take a look inside as the halls are impressive. Down to earth, huge and full of funny and interesting sentences on the walls!

Nagano

Japanese restaurant in the old town
Griesgasse 19
Salzburg 5020

The Nagano on the wonderfully renovated Artis Hof is right in the middle of Salzburg. The decor is understated but elegant and on a warm day diners can sit in the square. The menu is written in Japanese, English and German and there is a large variety of Japanese food including Temaki, Sushi, Sashimi, Norimaki, Tempora, Udon and Bento. The restaurant is often visited by Japanese tourists and this speaks for both the quality and authenticity of the food. You can also get a take-away.

One of the best and cheapest Turkish establishments in town, Osmans is located in the middle of Linzergasse, one of Salzburg's busiest shopping street. Situated next to the Mönchsberg lift, this place is a top tip for lovers of fine Italian cuisine. The owner buys most products in Italy itself (like San Daniele ham, fresh pesto, seafood and exquisite Italian wines) meaning that the food tastes just like it would in Rome, Florence or Naples. In the summer Pan e Vin runs an open-air bar opposite the Bürgerspitalskirche.

Raschhofers Rossbräu

Cosy beer garden in a shopping - centre
Alpenstraße 48
Salzburg 5020
Austria
+43 662 626444
This surprisingly good restaurant and beer garden is situated in the Herrnau shopping-centre. You can order regional dishes from Salzburg and Upper Austria. The prices are reasonable and you never have to wait too long. The beer garden is only open when the weather is nice and if you sit here, you will need to go and order inside. A personal favourite here is the Sunday Jazz breakfast. If you are thinking of going to this, then get to Raschhofer's early. Latecomers often can't find a table. As it doesn't take place every Sunday, you should call and ask for detailed information.

When the weather is good guests can sit outside in the garden and enjoy the good old country-style food. There is more than enough space for groups, both inside and out. The lunchtime menu always includes a good value set meal. Parking spaces are available.

This restaurant is located at the Kaiserjägerplatz near the great bridge that spans the Salzach. Neither the area nor the restaurant's exterior are very appealing, but don't let this stop you from coming to eat here! The inside is a bit run down but some of the best fried chicken in town, offered at a reasonable price, makes up for this. You can get takeaways too, and food can be ordered until 2a, which is very rare for Salzburg.

Situated half-way up Festungsberg, this place offers magnificent views over the old town of Salzburg. Stiegl is popular with locals young and old: the younger generation tend to meet in the upper beer garden for a drink, a snack and a chat, while hungry customers head to the lower garden, a lovely, leafy place for a romantic dinner for two. The lower part also contains a fine restaurant which offers exquisite Austrian cuisine and a 'Sound of Music Show'.

Central Europe's oldest restaurant
St Peter-Bezirk 1/4
Salzburg 5010
Austria
+43 662 841268
http://www.haslauer.at/
This restaurant professes to be the oldest restaurant in Central Europe. Established in 803, it may well be justified in its claims. The restaurant is situated in St Peter's Monastery and serves a mix of typical Austrian dishes and creative specialities like monastery stew and St. Peter's fish. A unique atmosphere and historic surroundings make for a memorable experience, yet the most remarkable of the five rooms has to be the "Richardstube," set in a vaulted cellar.
