This supermarket, which is opposite the Hanuschplatz bus station, is the biggest grocery store in the Old Town as well as one of the cheapest. You can find everything from fruit and vegetables at the entrance to counters for cheese and sausages, which also make sandwiches. There is also a fine range of wines and bread is baked throughout the day. It does get busy at certain times of the day though.

Biomarkt am Papagenoplatz

Market with healthy products
Papagenoplatz
Salzburg 5020
Austria
Every Friday, a small market is held on the beautiful Papagenoplatz (in the city centre). Organic farmers from the area surrounding Salzburg sell their products and there certainly is a lot on offer. Farmer Samshof from Neumarkt sells a variety of cheeses (the sheep's cheese is delicious), and Farmer Bishof from Büroos sells fresh meat and sausages. If you want to buy Fresh vegetables, then Farmer Klinger is always a good stop-off point. All of the products are organic so this is an ideal place to buy fresh, healthy food.

The Birg computer shop is located in the Forum shopping centre which can be found at the Bahnhofsplatz. Unfortunately it is a bit difficult to find the entrance to this shop, you have to go to the left side of the building where there is a cash machine and a pharmacy. You can buy a complete computer system, single components, memory chips, printers and accessories. There is also a very good workshop, albeit a little expensive. Phone calls are hardly ever answered since the shop is always busy.

In this shop at the Universitätsplatz (direction - Wiener Philharmonikergasse) you can find a good collection of international style jewellery from the Thirties to the Fifties. During this period, stylish jewellery was made using materials such as plastic, bakelite, rhinestone or more expensive stones. This is also why the prices vary substantially, it depends on what the piece you are thinking of buying is made of. You can also find cheaper modern pieces such as rings, bracelets, necklaces or ear-rings or more dear ons such as intriately decorated chokers.

Getreidegasse

Salzburg's most famous shopping street
Getreidegasse
Salzburg 5020
Austria
Salzburg´s Getreidegasse is the most famous street of the city, and therefore is the most crowded. If you are really interested in getting a view of the charming old houses it is recommended to visit it quite early, which means before 10a.m. Pretty portals and wonderful courtyards can only be seen and appreciated then. The Getreidegasse is famous for the wrought signs from the 16th to the 19th Centuries. The design of the signs dates back to the Middle Ages. It is worth taking a second look at the houses because they are adorned with dates, symbols or the names of their owners, so they often tell their own history.

The well known Austrian label for national costume Stassny offers an extensive collection of children´s fashion in the old town of Salzburg. Opposite the branch for adults you can find sweet and nice models, which are not kitschy but very fashionable and beautiful. The individual models are well finnished and therefore surely hardwearing. They are mainly made of natural materials such like cotton and wool. A rich selection of child-orientated accessories complete the offer.

Through the window you can take a look at an unusual shop: a number of big glass- and earthern-ware vessels and little wooden barrels stand in the small shop. Inside, you can find real delicacies: selected vinegars, olive oils in different aromatic flavors (especially recommended: the truffle-oil), salad oil (as an Austrian speciality the so-called black gold - Styrian pumpkin nut oil), but also alcoholic drinks such as brandy, whiskey, various types of schnapps and liqueurs. You can get individual amount in your own bottle, or you can buy from this shop. If you want these delicious specialities as a gift, the glass bottles are getting labeled and beautifully wrapped at the shop.

At the gentlemen's fashion place Wanger you will find stylish names like Boss, Hugo and Baldessarini. A very friendly and competent advice and a cup of coffee helps to make a fashionable decision in a nice and relaxed athmosphere. As a speciality of the house Wanger offers handmade made-to-measure shoes from Hungary. The shoemaker was discovered by the owner of the fashion shop himself. At Wanger a gentleman can clothe himself vom head to foot and perhaps by the way meets also a well known person from art or policy.

This shop is the best place to buy wines from all over the world in Salzburg. You can find wines that are typical for their respective countries as well as some that you may not know about. The whole range of wine that is for sale is accompanied by short descriptions. There are lots of Austrian wines but also some more exotic ones from places like Chile. The staff are very competent and readily at hand should you need some advice. Every month, certain wines are sold as special offers, so you can buy interesting wines at a lower price. You can also buy culinary specialities such as pesto here.

Winzermarkt

Annual wine market
Cornelius-Reitsamer-Platz
Salzburg
Austria
+43 662 80722179
Over the past decade Austria has emerged as an up-and-coming producer of dry white and dessert wines. Even its red wines are starting to make a name for themselves. A visit to the wine market, which is held in Salzburg every April and May, is therefore highly recommended for anybody remotely interested in wine. Dozens of wine-growers from Austria's different wine-growing regions have stalls at the market, making the choice and value-for-money quite exceptional. Many regional names are unfamiliar outside Austria but are still well worth trying. Drivers should not despair: they can fill up the car and enjoy the wine at home.
