Cajun cookin' at its best |
1289 Southwest Loop 410 San Antonio, TX 78227 United States +1 210 674 0019 http://www.acadianacafe.com/? |
For authentic Cajun cookin', this is the place to go in San Antonio. Located on the far west side of the city, the huge restaurant plays host to hordes of locals craving authentic Cajun cuisine, seafood and catfish. As this is definitely a family restaurant, you can expect child- and parent-friendly touches such as lids and straws for milk glasses, a plentiful supply of saltines to munch on, and crayons as a diversion. Housed in what resembles a massive two-story cedar house, the restaurant boasts a large porch and a cavernous interior. The quick and friendly service more than compensates for a table setting that leaves something to be desired (vinyl cloths, heavy wooden chairs and tables balanced on sugar packets for stability). Cajun specialties such as red beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya abound, and all are wonderfully prepared. Should you crave seafood, any of the shrimp entrees can't be beat. For fish lovers, be sure to try the famous catfish. Side dishes include expected choices such as coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies and basic vegetables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

San Antonio United States |
One of the original suburbs of San Antonio, the original developers nearly went bankrupt trying to develop this then remote area. Now, Alamo Heights is its own city with its own school district and zip code. "09" as the area is referred to (stemming from the zip code 78209), harbors some of the city's finest dining establishments and upscale shopping opportunities. And with good reason, as a huge portion of the city's wealth resides in this neighborhood. For dinner, locals flock to Review © 2007, Wcities |

Warehouse turned arts complex |
1400 South Alamo (at Probrandt) San Antonio, TX 78204 United States +1 210 227 6960 http://www.bluestarcomplex.com |
This huge former warehouse changed its tune when it was renovated and now houses a small but distinctive group of contemporary and non-traditional art studios and galleries. Many of these display well-known artists, but they also give recognition and opportunity to lesser-known local artisans. Besides art galleries and studios, you will also find a brewpub, a theater and living spaces. Blue Star tenants provide activities throughout the year that are fun for families and adults. However, you don't have to do the planned activities - just show up and browse. Gallery hours vary but most are open noon-6p Wednesday-Sunday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hop a trolley from the River Walk for something different at this brewpub. The huge copper brewing tanks here figure prominently and a sizable patio offers a view of the tranquil end of the River. Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends. Looking for wild game, then look to Bolo's, located in the Omni Hotel. It offers a diverse menu. From the rotisserie, you will find free-range chicken with potato gratin and mushroom sauce, Long Island duck served with wild rice. The herb-rubbed pork loin with brandied apples and French onion risotto is always a favorite. If steaks are more to your liking, then try the bone-in strip steak with an ancho chili sauce and potato gratin or maybe the center-cut filet mignon with garlic butter and vegetable ratatouille. Dance on one of the club's three dance floors and when you are hot and tired, enjoy a drink on the patio. If you are hungry, you can usually find someone selling tacos or hamburgers. This upscale neighborhood bar packs 'em in on the weekends, and it's no wonder, considering its incredibly long list of beers, scotches, tequilas, vodkas, liqueurs and more. A San Antonio favorite |
1900 Blanco San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 735 3552 |
This burger joint on the city's near-Northside has been cranking out burgers for 23 years. Some people may think that a burger is a burger, but they probably haven't been to Chris Madrid's. A consistent winner of various critics' polls over the years, the restaurant won the 2006 local newspaper's Best Burger award.Like a lot of local burger places, this spot is decidedly low-tech and high-taste. The Cheddar CZ is its signature meal, but you might want to try the devastatingly good bean burger, too. Add an order of fries and a cold beer, and you are in hamburger heaven. True Texas barbecue on the River Walk |
111 West Crockett San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 229 1941 http://countyline.com/ |
This is the kind of barbecue you dream about. The County Line serves up a variety of tender meat, slow-cooked for 18 hours, that literally falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth. Located on the River Walk, this restaurant not only offers a spectacular view, but also affords downtown visitors an opportunity to enjoy the "state meal" without venturing far from their hotels. Not a beef eater? Don't despair; the barbecue chicken, turkey, pork and sausage are equally tasty. All entrees come served with generous portions of sides, including classic potato salad, beans and coleslaw. For dessert, be sure to try one of the fruit cobblers. A full bar is available, but real Texans drink ice cold beer with their barbecue. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crumpets' casual elegance is rivaled only by its contemporary cuisine. Daily specials and beautiful surroundings make this little restaurant and bakery popular among ladies who lunch, couples who kiss and friends who fraternize. Dining al fresco is simply a treat. Let the shade of the live oak trees ease the burden of the sun as you listen to the soft rush of small waterfalls in the background, or sit by one of the huge picture windows and enjoy the scenery from the inside. 406 Navarro San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 224 0026 http://www.dickslastresort.com |
This is by far one of the rowdiest restaurants on the River Walk, so diners can expect loud music, great food, cold beer and steely attitudes from the waitstaff. Do not take your in-laws or your children; unless, of course, they can swig a longneck and crack crab legs with the best of 'em. The food here is good and has a definite Cajun flavor. All entrees either arrive in a bucket (crawfish and crab legs) or on top of butcher paper (hamburgers, ribs, chicken). It's messy, but fun. The crowd tends to get a little crazier the later it gets, as the restaurant gradually morphs into a full-fledged bar with live music every night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This property's close proximity to shopping, dining, entertainment and the airport makes it a popular hotel. Renovations made in the mid-1990s improved its appearance and some say its comfort level. The center courtyard and pool are beautiful, and the conference space is ample for borderline-large groups. A special draw is Tex's Sports Bar, a popular gathering place for fans of all sports. More than 13,000 combined square feet of meeting space (divided between two floors) can accommodate several thousands of guests depending upon the room configuration. The Essence of San Antonio |

When you think of San Antonio, two things automatically come to mind: the Alamo and the River Walk. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems, and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. The city's most popular attraction, it is often crowded and filled with children, party goers, tourists and locals. In the heart of the River Walk is an area filled with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, punctuated by fountains and towering Cypress trees. The River Walk is particularly crazy during Fiesta. Beautiful shopping mall on the River Walk |
849 East Commerce St (between Bowie and Alamo streets) San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 225 0000 http://www.shoprivercenter.com/ |
As far as shopping malls go, this one is beautiful. Set right on the River Walk and attached to the Marriott River Center hotel, this mall is a dining, shopping and entertainment mecca. Although anchored by Foley's, Dillard's and an AMC movie theater, the mall offers scores of specialty shops and gift stores, as well as one of the largest parking garages downtown. Musical groups and dance troupes perform nightly during the summer months at the lagoon in the middle of the mall. Visitors can also board barges for tours of the River Walk from the lower level. German deli in the heart of downtown |
424 E Commerce St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 6692 |
A San Antonio institution, this authentic German deli in the heart of downtown has been serving business people and tourists alike since 1917. Known for its delicious deli fare of corned beef, chicken salad, reubens and braunschweiger sandwiches, this is an excellent place to stop in for lunch or dinner. Don't forget to wash your meal down with some of the special Schilo's root beer or top it off with the signature cherry cheesecake. A popular spot, the dining room fills quickly. Restaurant by day, bar by night |
7300 Jones Maltsberger Road (near the Alamo Quarry Market) San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 828 3508 http://www.stonewerks.com |
The décor here is something between a rustic ranch house and a polished hacienda. The interior is fairly standard, with booths and tables, but the wrought-iron tables that dot the patio add a comfortable charm. Strategically placed heaters keep the patio warm and wonderful year-round. A full bar serves several draft and bottled beers as well as a good selection of wine. If you are hungry, drop in for lunch or an early dinner. Start with the divine artichoke dip and then dig in to the pecan breaded chicken. Note that the kitchen stops serving food two hours before closing time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Martini and Cigar Bar |
111 W Crockett St #205 (between Presa and Navarro streets) San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 476 0005 |
Ultra-chic without trying too hard, Swig is San Antonio's ultimate martini and cigar bar. The full-service bar features more varieties of potent martinis than you can count. Along with delicious hors d'oeuvres, Swig offers the cigar afficionado perhaps the most complete humidor on the River Walk. Live jazz adds sizzle to the ambiance each night as this is easily one of the best spots to either start your evening or wind it down. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The funky eatery goes downtown |
124 Broadway (at Travis) San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 354 1559 http://hotx.com/twinsister/ |
The funky cafe found a second home downtown. Just like its uptown twin, this cafe serves breakfast but is most popular for lunch. For dinner though, you'll have to go back uptown. The healthy, vegetarian-friendly lunch menu offers a welcome alternative to the previously limited and unbearable lunch options downtown. While you won't find any Mexican food entrees, the "blue plate" specials and various soups and sandwiches give this spot all the business it can handle. As this location is even smaller than the original location, the crowds pack in early, so plan ahead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beautiful bar with an emphasis on the bubbly |
207 N Presa St (between Commerce & Market Sts) San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 224 2900 / +1 210 224 1313 http://www.zincwine.com |
This bar pours more than 40 varieties of wine available by the glass, including more than five varieties of champagne. If none of those suit you, partake of any one of the numerous brandies or liqueurs, or enjoy a premium mixed drink from the fully stocked bar. Beautiful but small, Zinc has almost an elitist, yet friendly, feel; it is as if you have discovered the clique and have been welcomed. The crowds is small, even though it is just one block off the beaten path from River Walk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Southwestern cuisine on the River Walk |
223 Losoya San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 227 0864 http://www.zunigrill.com |
Although this is one of the only restaurants on the River Walk that opens for breakfast, it is for lunch or dinner that you should visit. Enjoy tasty enchiladas and chicken dishes, or a huge spinach salad with grilled salmon. Be sure to save room for dessert, too. The lively interior, which contains only a moderate amount of seating, opens to an expansive riverside patio populated with colorful, mosaic-tiled tables and scurrying sparrows. A popular spot among locals and tourists alike, the place fills early; large groups should call ahead to make reservations. The restaurant also has a fairly large banquet area for private functions.
