San Antonians love to eat, and it shows in both its fine restaurants and its casual cafes. Whether you enjoy perfectly grilled steaks, tender barbecue, tasteful vegetarian fare or perfectly prepared sushi, you will find whatever your tastebuds crave. Of course, San Antonio is most famous for its Tex-Mex cuisine; no visit to the city could be considered complete without at least one dinner involving enchiladas or tamales, and one breakfast of chorizo and egg tacos.

The River Walk

The huge numbers of visitors to the River Walk have to eat somewhere. Recent property developments in the area created space for more restaurants, ultimately adding diversity to what existed. Some of the restaurants are excellent, some are merely good, but all are crowded. One of the most popular—and rightfully so—is Boudro's – A Texas Bistro. With a prime location in the heart of the River Walk, an unparalleled menu featuring Blackened Prime Rib, Ancho Shrimp, fresh fish and Prickly Pear Margaritas, it is a dining must for locals, tourists and many visiting celebrities.

Another favorite among locals and visitors alike is Paesano's River Walk, serving up delicious Italian cuisine. Don't expect to find generic spaghetti or lasagna on the menu, though, as their specialties include Shrimp Paesano's (a garlicky, parmesan shrimp dish) and a huge salad with artichoke hearts and hearts of palm. Other fine choices include County Line and Hard Rock Café for barbecue and classic American fare; Rio Rio Cantina, Casa Rio, The Original Mexican Restaurant, La Paloma and Zuni Grill for Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine; Michelino's for Italian food; and Presidio for Mediterranean cuisine.

The many hotels located on the River Walk also boast some fine restaurants. Save for a few exceptions, the restaurants on the river are independently owned. Should you not be a very adventurous diner, there are a few chain restaurants (such as the Olive Garden) located in Rivercenter Mall.

Downtown

More culinary surprises await you just a few steps up from the River Walk. Wander just a few blocks from the river and you will discover Schilo's, serving German fare; Twin Sisters, offering delicious salads, soups and vegetarian dishes; and G/M Steakhouse, famous for cheap yet juicy steaks. Venture down a bit farther to the west and you will find one of the best sandwich shops in the city. Almost hidden in the street level of the office building at the corner of Commerce and Soledad, Season's offers a menu of sandwiches and soups that change with the seasons. Be sure to save room for dessert, too—they're homemade and delicious.

Alamo Heights

Originally a suburb of San Antonio, Alamo Heights now finds itself centrally located in the heart of the city. A decidedly upper-middle class area of town, it boasts some of the best dining and drinking options. Start your evening at Cappycino's on Broadway with drinks and appetizers, or end it there with coffee and dessert. One of the city's only smoke-free bars, Cappycino's menu is so extensive it comes in a multi-page booklet form. From here you can move on to dinner at the bar's sister restaurant, Cappy's, right next door and enjoy fresh seafood, perfectly prepared steaks and inventive chicken dishes. Be sure you don't miss their chocolate cake—it's a closely guarded recipe from Cappy's mother's kitchen and is the best in town.

There are many other prime choices for both lunch and dinner in Alamo Heights. Paloma Blanca on Broadway offers some of the city's best Tex-Mex and margaritas, as does La Fonda on New Braunfels. For hamburgers, pizza and salad, nothing beats E Z's Brick Oven And Grill at either their original location on New Braunfels or their newest addition in the Quarry Market. For creative sandwiches, the best tea and Sunday brunch, be sure to visit Madhatter's Tea on Avenue B near the Witte Museum.

Several spots in this neighborhood combine great dining with a great bar. To see and be seen, try Café Soleil on Broadway. Their contemporary menu is a big draw for sophisticated diners, while their bar draws a mixed crowd of young and old, all attracted equally to the live music, the Internet-linked computers and the pool tables.

The Loop/North Central

Circling the city, Interstate Loop 410 is lined with many fine restaurants. For excellent Chinese cuisine, try Formosa Garden, located on the access road between the Nacogdoches and Broadway exits. Its diverse menu includes everything from Szechwan Chicken and Lemon Chicken to Beef with Broccoli and Sweet & Sour Pork, all reasonably priced and perfectly prepared. For fun Cajun food, visit Acadiana Café on the Far West side of town between the Culebra and Marbach exits. Just about everything comes with hush puppies here, and there is always the option to "blacken" everything, be it fish, chicken or shrimp.

Should your tastes range more toward traditional fare, you might try Mama's Café on Nacogdoches, or Tex's Grill and Sports Bar in the Airport Hilton, where you should definitely try the red beans with venison sausage. Several restaurant chains are located around The Loop as well.

Journey up State Highway 281 to enjoy large dining facilities with plenty of parking. For Tex-Mex, try the homegrown Alamo Café, offering enchiladas, fajitas and other typical fare. Save room for dessert, too; their apple empanadas are heavenly.

One of the city's Italian cuisine treasures is hidden on Brookhollow just off of the highway. Fratelli's offers the usual Italian dishes such as lasagne and fettucine alfredo in huge portions at reasonable prices. While the quality is not necessarily remarkable, it is always consistently satisfying.

Out-of-the-Way

San Antonio offers many more wonderful dining options off the beaten path. Try Bolo's Grill, located in the Omni Hotel on IH-10 at Wurzbach. Offering exquisite game, beef and chicken entrees in an elegant atmosphere, Bolo's is an excellent choice for a celebration or a night on the town. Enjoy elegant Italian cuisine at La Scala or Razmiko's, romantic dining at The Grey Moss Inn or Crumpets, more Tex-Mex at Los Barrios or La Fogata, or great burgers at Tycoon Flats or Chris Madrid's.

Drinking

Whatever your mood, San Antonio has a place to party. The River Walk plays host to several fun, but somewhat touristy, bars such as Polly Esther's retro dance club, The Hard Rock Café, Swig Martini Bar, Dick's Last Resort and Durty Nelly's. Street-level downtown gets more interesting with the Houston St. Alehouse, Zinc Champagne and Wine Bar, and The Bonham Exchange, arguably the city's best dance club. Predominantly a gay and lesbian bar, The Bonham Exchange draws decidedly mixed crowds on the weekends, with Wednesday nights affectionately termed “Straight Nights.”

Every neighborhood has its most popular hangouts. In Alamo Heights, try The Laboratory Brewing Company, Stonewerks or Niles Wine Bar. If you are in North Central, be sure to visit Martini's Lounge or one of two multi-club entertainment complexes, The Atrium and Park Place. Around the Medical Center area, The Aquarium, Mama's Bar and Dave & Buster's are a few of the hot spots. South of downtown, near the Blue Star Arts Complex, locals' picks include the Blue Star Brewing Company, La Tuna and Beto's Empanada Bar.

For authentic Cajun cookin', this is the place to go in San Antonio. Located on the far west side of the city, the huge restaurant plays host to hordes of locals craving authentic Cajun cuisine, seafood and catfish. As this is definitely a family restaurant, you can expect child- and parent-friendly touches such as lids and straws for milk glasses, a plentiful supply of saltines to munch on, and crayons as a diversion. Housed in what resembles a massive two-story cedar house, the restaurant boasts a large porch and a cavernous interior. The quick and friendly service more than compensates for a table setting that leaves something to be desired (vinyl cloths, heavy wooden chairs and tables balanced on sugar packets for stability). Cajun specialties such as red beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya abound, and all are wonderfully prepared. Should you crave seafood, any of the shrimp entrees can't be beat. For fish lovers, be sure to try the famous catfish. Side dishes include expected choices such as coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies and basic vegetables.

Alamo Heights

San Antonio
United States
One of the original suburbs of San Antonio, the original developers nearly went bankrupt trying to develop this then remote area. Now, Alamo Heights is its own city with its own school district and zip code. "09" as the area is referred to (stemming from the zip code 78209), harbors some of the city's finest dining establishments and upscale shopping opportunities. And with good reason, as a huge portion of the city's wealth resides in this neighborhood. For dinner, locals flock to Paloma Blanca or Cappy's. Beer and pool preside at the Broadway 50/50, and one of the city's best wine lists calls Niles Wine Bar home. For a gift for that special someone, you can't go wrong at Sloan-Hall, Timbuktu, or Sunset Ridge Home and Hardware. At Twin Sisters, pull up a chair and get your daily dose of neighborhood gossip over breakfast or lunch.

This huge former warehouse changed its tune when it was renovated and now houses a small but distinctive group of contemporary and non-traditional art studios and galleries. Many of these display well-known artists, but they also give recognition and opportunity to lesser-known local artisans. Besides art galleries and studios, you will also find a brewpub, a theater and living spaces. Blue Star tenants provide activities throughout the year that are fun for families and adults. However, you don't have to do the planned activities - just show up and browse. Gallery hours vary but most are open noon-6p Wednesday-Sunday.

Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends.

The herb-rubbed pork loin with brandied apples and French onion risotto is always a favorite. If steaks are more to your liking, then try the bone-in strip steak with an ancho chili sauce and potato gratin or maybe the center-cut filet mignon with garlic butter and vegetable ratatouille. The Bonham Exchange, simply known as "The Bonham," is a large and popular nightclub a couple of blocks away from Rivercenter Mall. Although the Bonham still primarily sees itself as a lesbian/gay club, times have changed, and the club now boasts a more diverse clientele. Dance on one of the club's three dance floors and when you are hot and tired, enjoy a drink on the patio. If you are hungry, you can usually find someone selling tacos or hamburgers. This burger joint on the city's near-Northside has been cranking out burgers for 23 years. Some people may think that a burger is a burger, but they probably haven't been to Chris Madrid's. A consistent winner of various critics' polls over the years, the restaurant won the 2006 local newspaper's Best Burger award.Like a lot of local burger places, this spot is decidedly low-tech and high-taste. The Cheddar CZ is its signature meal, but you might want to try the devastatingly good bean burger, too. Add an order of fries and a cold beer, and you are in hamburger heaven.

This is by far one of the rowdiest restaurants on the River Walk, so diners can expect loud music, great food, cold beer and steely attitudes from the waitstaff. Do not take your in-laws or your children; unless, of course, they can swig a longneck and crack crab legs with the best of 'em. The food here is good and has a definite Cajun flavor. All entrees either arrive in a bucket (crawfish and crab legs) or on top of butcher paper (hamburgers, ribs, chicken). It's messy, but fun. The crowd tends to get a little crazier the later it gets, as the restaurant gradually morphs into a full-fledged bar with live music every night.

A lounge lizard's favorite hideaway
8507 McCullough
San Antonio, TX 78216
United States
+1 210 344 4747
Virtually hidden in an unassuming strip center behind one of the city's largest shopping malls, this bar is a favorite of young and old alike. Dripping in red velvet, naugahyde-covered chairs and subdued lighting, the small space is filled to capacity by locals who come to see the bar's owner perform on stage. The owner is probably one of the best cover singers around, possessing the uncanny ability to sound exactly like Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson or anyone else, for that matter. This is the epitome of a lounge act, and the Mylar "rain" curtain behind the stage is icing on the cake.

Michelino's

Quaint Italian eatery on the River Walk
521 River Walk St
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 223 2939
One of the prettier restaurants on the River Walk, Michelino's has an excellent seating area that seems to compliment the surroundings. The food here is solidly Italian, with a North Italian country appeal. The pastas come accompanied with fresh poultry, veal, beef and seafood with flavorful sauces. If they all look good and you can't decide, then try the Angel Hair Di Mare with a roasted garlic cream sauce. The restaurant has an excellent wine list, as well, which does include some affordable selections. This place is an excellent choice for business dinners or just a lovely evening out.

Northeast/North Central

San Antonio
United States
"Go north, young married, professional couple with 2.5 kids and a dog seeking a mammoth-sized mortgage!" The growth in this direction has been so overwhelming, you would think someone must have screamed that command. Shopping centers, housing developments and highways are popping up all over North East and North Central San Antonio as many new residents move in, both from out of town and from within the city's more central neighborhoods. This kind of rapid growth seems to require predictability, as is evidenced in the plethora of restaurant and shopping chains. If you want to shop at Old Navy, use the phone book. Otherwise, be a rebel and shop at Sticks and Stones, Too Good to Be Threw or James Avery Craftsman.

The River Walk boasts a disproportionate number of Mexican restaurants. So, what does one do to stand out from the crowd? Create different flavored margaritas made out of fresh fruit and have such a large selection that people just keep coming back again and again. While you enjoy your drink, dine on classic Mexican fare such as fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos. Lots of outdoor seating is available overlooking the River Walk.

If you are planning a trip to the Alamo city, there are two things you must eat: any type of authentic Mexican food and Paesano's "Shrimp Paesano." This incredible appetizer/entree is so rich and tasty that you won't know when to stop. Paesano's on the River Walk has a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere; you can sit inside or by the river and browse through an extensive wine list. Don't stop with the Shrimp Paesano, though, because everything on the menu is fresh and scrumptious. The pasta dishes are huge, the pizza is made with fresh, innovative ingredients, and the meats are varied and delicious. If you're dining away from downtown, but still in the mood for Italian food, visit Paesano's at its Quarry location.

Totally retro, totally kitsch and totally fun. This dance club occupies three floors of a former office building overlooking the River Walk. The first floor features '90s and current music and is decked up with plenty of mirrors, silver tones and neon colors. Polly Esther's Disco holds court on the second floor and features music from the disco era. The '70s experience is complete with a "Saturday Night Fever"-style lighted disco floor, a Partridge Family bar and a Lava Lamp Lounge. Topping it all off is Polly Esther's Culture Club on the third floor. Take a nostalgia trip back into the '80s, complete with black light bars and a laser-lit "Purple Rain" dance floor. Drink specials, contests and cover charges vary.

This is one of the more elegant places to eat on the River Walk. As you walk by this restaurant, you cannot help but notice the mission-like colonnade entrance that beckons you to enter. The outdoor patio seating surrounds a beautiful, large wrap-around bar, which anchors this restaurant.

The food here is described as eclectic New American and compliments the surroundings nicely. The menu is rounded out with unique selections of pasta, poultry, pork, and top-grade beef. Although most of the entrees are excellent, waiters tend to push the ever-popular pecan-crusted chicken in an apple/brandy/butter sauce.

Mexican food so good, they named it twice. Located in the heart of the city's River Walk, Rio Rio Cantina offers tried-and-true Tex-Mex dining, both indoors and overlooking the river. Do not miss favorites such as Green Enchiladas, beef and Chicken Fajitas and enormous Quesadillas. The bartenders also make a darn good margarita. http://thesanantonioriverwalk.com
When you think of San Antonio, two things automatically come to mind: the Alamo and the River Walk. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems, and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. The city's most popular attraction, it is often crowded and filled with children, party goers, tourists and locals. In the heart of the River Walk is an area filled with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, punctuated by fountains and towering Cypress trees. The River Walk is particularly crazy during Fiesta.

River Walk/Downtown

San Antonio
United States
The heart of the city's tourism business beats along the River Walk and in the downtown area. Densely packed with hotels of varying price ranges, attractions, restaurants and bars, a visitor could conceivably spend his entire trip in one area of town. The area bustles with activity nearly every night of the week and almost all year long, with locals and tourists alike enjoying mouth-watering cuisine at Boudro's or Paesano's River Walk, singing their hearts out at Howl at the Moon, dancing the night away at Polly Esther's or knocking back a few brews at the Houston Street Alehouse. Not your average tourist trap, the River Walk entices many locals to brave the crowds and enjoy their own city.

As far as shopping malls go, this one is beautiful. Set right on the River Walk and attached to the Marriott River Center hotel, this mall is a dining, shopping and entertainment mecca. Although anchored by Foley's, Dillard's and an AMC movie theater, the mall offers scores of specialty shops and gift stores, as well as one of the largest parking garages downtown.

Musical groups and dance troupes perform nightly during the summer months at the lagoon in the middle of the mall. Visitors can also board barges for tours of the River Walk from the lower level.

The décor here is something between a rustic ranch house and a polished hacienda. The interior is fairly standard, with booths and tables, but the wrought-iron tables that dot the patio add a comfortable charm. Strategically placed heaters keep the patio warm and wonderful year-round. A full bar serves several draft and bottled beers as well as a good selection of wine. If you are hungry, drop in for lunch or an early dinner. Start with the divine artichoke dip and then dig in to the pecan breaded chicken. Note that the kitchen stops serving food two hours before closing time.

The funky cafe found a second home downtown. Just like its uptown twin, this cafe serves breakfast but is most popular for lunch. For dinner though, you'll have to go back uptown. The healthy, vegetarian-friendly lunch menu offers a welcome alternative to the previously limited and unbearable lunch options downtown. While you won't find any Mexican food entrees, the "blue plate" specials and various soups and sandwiches give this spot all the business it can handle. As this location is even smaller than the original location, the crowds pack in early, so plan ahead.

If none of those suit you, partake of any one of the numerous brandies or liqueurs, or enjoy a premium mixed drink from the fully stocked bar.
