"Where heaven and health meet" |
21 Brees Blvd San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 822 7681 |
Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don't let the name fool you |
8400 North New Braunfels Ave San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 824 0116 http://www.sawhost.com/barndoor |
The hokey name and checkered plastic tablecloths belie the mouthwatering (and pricey) steaks, chicken and seafood at this San Antonio institution. The Barn Door runs its own butcher shop, and every aged cut is tender and juicy. This steakhouse is huge and its atmosphere is casual, with pictures of horses and cowboys telling the story of old Texas. It's equally suited to a business lunch, a first date or a family night out. If you find yourself waiting for a table on the weekend, wander into the bar and check out the horse racing memorabilia. At lunch, try a tenderloin sandwich or a chicken-fried rib eye steak. At dinner, the six-ounce Lady's Filet and the 14-ounce Gentlemen's Ribeye is most tempting. The restaurant also serves a great selection of seafood, chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and quail. If you're dining with a good friend, pour some extra-garlicky Green Goddess dressing on your salad. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The dramatic flaming torches positioned under an open-beam canopy outside the restaurant promises something different...and the food delivers on that promise.A Southwestern theme is emphasized with pine timbers, pleasing shades of turquoise and terracotta, and lots of Native American accessories. The restaurant is always busy during lunch and dinner, so be prepared to wait. Everything that comes out of the kitchen is garnished with spicy goodness. Try the sublime Tudie's Chicken-Fried Tuna ($12.95), the tender Tahoe Tenderloin ($18.95) or the provocative Desert Fire Pasta ($10.95). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kid-friendly Cajun Crab House |
255 E Basse Rd #1400 San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 930 1736 http://www.joescrabshack.com |
If you have children, this restaurant is a must. Joe's Crab Shack, located in the Quarry Shopping Center, has everything, from excellent crab, fish, shrimp, hush puppies and oysters to a fun and lively environment. What make Joe's stand out from the sea of restaurants are the friendly wait staff and the singing and dancing. At random points, music will start to boom from all corners of the restaurant, at which time the employees begin performing a choreographed dance. Not only do the patrons have a ball, the performers truly have a blast, too. This restaurant provides entertainment for children and parents or for large groups of friends. If you want candlelight and wine, stay away. If you're looking for laughs, loud music and great food, Joe's Crab Shack is the ticket. It also has a sandy play area for kids in the back. Wonderful Italian restaurant still somewhat undiscovered |
6825 San Pedro San Antonio, TX 78216 United States +1 210 349 5251 |
This great find hides behind an unassuming facade in a less-than-glitzy neighborhood. Once inside the door, you'll discover a menu ripe with delicious and authentic Italian dishes, an impressive wine list, beautiful decor and thoughtful service. Luigi's puts its own delicious mark on standard fare such as Fettuccine Alfredo, lasagna and manicotti. For an unusual side dish, try the steamed spinach with lemon and butter. The soft lighting and the pianist help create an intimate atmosphere for lovers or friends; you should opt to leave the kids at home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unbelievable chocolate shakes at the lunch counter...and aspirin, too. |
3902 McCullough San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 822 3361 |
Sure, you can find Pepto-Bismol, aspirin and a myriad of other pharmaceutical needs in this small neighborhood drug store. But it's the lunch counter in back that draws the locals. Plop down on a stool and order a juicy burger or a perfectly prepared BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich with fries. But by all means, order a large chocolate shake. Thick and creamy, they're rumored to be the best in the city and many a patron have agreed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant Italian dining |
555 E Basse Rd Ste 100 San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 828 5191 http://www.paesanos.com |
One of the most acclaimed Italian restaurants in San Antonio, Paesano's has been a local favorite for decades. Tourists are most familiar with its location on the River Walk, but the one just north of downtown in Lincoln Heights, near the Quarry Marketplace, offers the same great menu in a different atmosphere. Paesano's in Lincoln Heights is relaxed yet sophisticated, a place to see and be seen. Be sure to visit on a nice day during sunset. The west room has a spectacular sunset view overlooking the Quarry Golf Course; it's a view that you would not want to miss, especially with that special someone. You can choose from a variety of dinners including red snapper sautéed with artichokes, mushrooms and white wine; orange roughly with lemon butter and garlic; and shrimp with fra diavolo sauce. Of course, the restaurant would not be the same without its namesake, Gamberi Paesano (Shrimp Paesano), which is served as either an appetizer or a dinner. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A venerable Italian fixture in San Antonio, Paletta's offers an extensive line of imported delicacies, casual lunches and food to go. Although Paletta's is technically a food store, its lunches are legendary and draw quite a crowd. Huge sandwiches, homemade Italian specialties such as lasagna and sausage with peppers, and rich desserts top the menu. After your lunch, be sure to allow time to browse the food section and marvel at the variety. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A meal at this restaurant will have you feeling like you're at a local eatery in Italy. The patio, which is a mélange of olive and oak trees in true alfrescan fashion and adorned by the seasonal live creek, helps recreate the Italian feel. The menu adds to it with different delicious dishes of anitpasti, insalate, pastas and wood-fired pizzas. Pesto, Tomato, Crisp Romaine, and Mozarella Cheese are four mouth-watering types of panini that the restaurant serves. All ingredients are seasonal, so you can expect a different taste each time. Fine Persian cuisine |
4230 McCullough San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 829 5050 |
In a city filled with Tex-Mex offerings, it's delightful to find a restaurant with a different ethnic flair. A small and intimate spot, Shiraz is a wonderful choice for a break in your culinary routine. A plentiful and diverse menu offers exquisite Persian delicacies and gourmet dishes. Shish kabobs are a mainstay, with the lamb kabob being the most popular. If chicken is your choosing, try the Fesenjan, a chicken breast baked in a sweet walnut pomegranate sauce. Beef lovers will thoroughly enjoy the Ghormeh Sabzi, which consists of sautéed beef with parsley, cilantro and green onions. The restaurant also offers several seafood and vegetarian selections along with a wonderful selection of wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant by day, bar by night |
7300 Jones Maltsberger Road (near the Alamo Quarry Market) San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 828 3508 http://www.stonewerks.com |
The décor here is something between a rustic ranch house and a polished hacienda. The interior is fairly standard, with booths and tables, but the wrought-iron tables that dot the patio add a comfortable charm. Strategically placed heaters keep the patio warm and wonderful year-round. A full bar serves several draft and bottled beers as well as a good selection of wine. If you are hungry, drop in for lunch or an early dinner. Start with the divine artichoke dip and then dig in to the pecan breaded chicken. Note that the kitchen stops serving food two hours before closing time. Review © 2007, Wcities |
