"Where heaven and health meet" |
21 Brees Blvd San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 822 7681 |
Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant offers a mix of both Texan and Mediterranean flavors. Among its specialties and other highly requested items are the Pecan Crusted Prime Rib and the Jumbo Sea Scallops. If your taste runs more toward traditional Texas home cooking, try the Wild Mixed Grill, which consists of four different meats accompanied by potatoes. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is inviting, making this a great place when you're planning for that special dinner. Also open for breakfast and lunch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Anne Marie's a simple place with humble beginnings and a healthy menu. The restaurant might not be a wow place for a brunch or lunch, but it certainly has your nutritional requirements in mind. Daily specials are hot, literally, and the price is cool. The place is more popular for its banquet rooms at Devonshire, and Anne Marie's catering capabilities are renowned anyway. In the meanwhile, for those interested in a light lunch, which is lighter on your pocket, step into Anne Marie's. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don't let the name fool you |
8400 North New Braunfels Ave San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 824 0116 http://www.sawhost.com/barndoor |
The hokey name and checkered plastic tablecloths belie the mouthwatering (and pricey) steaks, chicken and seafood at this San Antonio institution. The Barn Door runs its own butcher shop, and every aged cut is tender and juicy. This steakhouse is huge and its atmosphere is casual, with pictures of horses and cowboys telling the story of old Texas. It's equally suited to a business lunch, a first date or a family night out. If you find yourself waiting for a table on the weekend, wander into the bar and check out the horse racing memorabilia. At lunch, try a tenderloin sandwich or a chicken-fried rib eye steak. At dinner, the six-ounce Lady's Filet and the 14-ounce Gentlemen's Ribeye is most tempting. The restaurant also serves a great selection of seafood, chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and quail. If you're dining with a good friend, pour some extra-garlicky Green Goddess dressing on your salad. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hop a trolley from the River Walk for something different at this brewpub. The huge copper brewing tanks here figure prominently and a sizable patio offers a view of the tranquil end of the River. Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends. This little restaurant is tucked away so well, you almost don't notice it. The multicultural cuisine makes decisions a challenge. Pasta, tapas, seafood, Mediterranean specialties and vegetarian dishes populate the menu. If you indulge, the award-winning wine list is extensive and offers several choices for even the most discriminating palate. Live entertainment, usually jazz music, is featured each Friday night. For that uniquely Texan barbecue flavor, Bob's Smokehouse is the place to go. Whether you choose the juicy brisket, smoked sausage, barbecue chicken or beef ribs, a better barbecue plate is hard to come by. For something a little outside the norm, you might want to try the lamb ribs. Be sure to get a helping of the homemade beans and potato salad, too. Looking for wild game, then look to Bolo's, located in the Omni Hotel. It offers a diverse menu. From the rotisserie, you will find free-range chicken with potato gratin and mushroom sauce, Long Island duck served with wild rice. The herb-rubbed pork loin with brandied apples and French onion risotto is always a favorite. If steaks are more to your liking, then try the bone-in strip steak with an ancho chili sauce and potato gratin or maybe the center-cut filet mignon with garlic butter and vegetable ratatouille. Quaint Mexican Restaurant on the River Walk |
527 River Walk San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 2939 |
While the city, along with the River Walk for that matter, is overrun with Mexican restaurants, this one distinguishes itself by offering both a beautiful view of the River Walk and a quiet atmosphere. Along with a friendly wait staff, Cafe Ole offers patrons sweet serenades of Mexican mariachis on a nightly basis. The mariachis are one of the defining local Hispanic traditions and really give guests an authentic taste of the culture that makes San Antonio unique. The menu is more Tex-Mex than pure Mexican, but includes tasty fajitas, enchiladas, flautas and quesadillas to name a few selections. This restaurant is also known for its good selection of margaritas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Coffee, cats and chai |

What it lacks in friendly service, Calcutta makes up for in atmosphere. Hidden behind the Grill on the Hill restaurant in the Medical Center, this unassuming house-turned-coffeehouse welcomes everyone from poets and artists to students and business executives. If this place were any more laid back, it would fall over. Surreal paintings with a religious motif clutter the walls inside, and a couple of fat cats claim squatter's rights on the quaintly mismatched chairs and tables. Espresso, cappuccino, latte and the now-popular chai are served day and night along with breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you're not one for java, several bottled beers are also available. If you don't love sinful desserts, delicious coffee and fine wines, then perhaps you should choose another place. Otherwise, enjoy them all while curled up on a big comfy couch, poised at an antique table, or relaxing on a shaded patio. This coffeehouse and wine bar is one of the best kept secrets in the city. As is common in this part of town, Candlelight draws a mixed crowd. For a conservative city, this establishment is decidedly gay friendly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mouth-watering barbeque and smoked turkey |
3619 North Panam Expressway San Antonio, TX 78219 United States +1 210 212 6400 |
Casey's has barbecue so good that even the President of the United States has eaten there. This restaurant serves up spicy, flavorful brisket and truly exceptional smoked turkey along with other local favorites such as smoked sausage and barbeque sandwiches. The side dishes are a cut above what is served at most places: the pinto beans are seasoned delicately, and the potato salad is by far one of the tastiest around, with crunchy bits of pickle, yet no mustard-heavy aftertaste. Breakfast tacos are served daily and lunch is served after 11am. Catering is available too. The décor is rustic and Western-themed, featuring genuine saddles, ropes and cowboy memorabilia. Wooden floors and plank tables lend to the Texas ambiance. Casey's delicious barbecue sauce is on every table, so you can kick up the flavor another notch if you please. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a romantic dinner, ask for a table in the gazebo section. Each secluded table is surrounded by a white wrought-iron dome laced with (ahem, plastic) ivy. However, after a few of this place's 52 varieties of margaritas, you won't care. Expect to find the usual Tex-Mex favorites: enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. Located on the River Walk, this restaurant not only offers a spectacular view, but also affords downtown visitors an opportunity to enjoy the "state meal" without venturing far from their hotels. Not a beef eater? Don't despair; the barbecue chicken, turkey, pork and sausage are equally tasty. Crabby Jacks is a popular place with the happy-hour crowd, the dinner crowd and the late-night crowd, and it succeeds in catering to all three. With its weather-beaten wood and tank of live lobsters, this bar/restaurant looks like it belongs on a beach more than it does fronting a strip center. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, accented with red lights and lots of beer gear. Pull up a stool at one of the three large bars or grab a booth for drinks and dinner. The menu is laden with seafood items including steamed, fried and broiled selections of fish, crab, shrimp, lobster and oysters. If you don't like shellfish, you can choose from several beef, chicken and pasta entrées. This is by far one of the rowdiest restaurants on the River Walk, so diners can expect loud music, great food, cold beer and steely attitudes from the waitstaff. Do not take your in-laws or your children; unless, of course, they can swig a longneck and crack crab legs with the best of 'em. The food here is good and has a definite Cajun flavor. All entrees either arrive in a bucket (crawfish and crab legs) or on top of butcher paper (hamburgers, ribs, chicken). It's messy, but fun. The crowd tends to get a little crazier the later it gets, as the restaurant gradually morphs into a full-fledged bar with live music every night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hunting scenes (foxes and hounds, not guns and deer, thank you) decorate the richly colored walls, while 33 large-screen TV's broadcast sporting events and music videos. Game rooms flank the main room and bar and feature "civilized" entertainment such as billiards, darts and shuffleboard. The kitchen is open all day and serves up generous portions of (non-English) food such as Grand Champion Wings, Philadelphia Chicken Sandwich and Hawaiian Pizza. The service leaves a little to be desired, but overall, you are likely to have a good time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

"Ogenki desu ka?" This is one of the first things you will hear from the friendly people at Fujiya Japanese Garden Restaurant. Tasty Mongolian-style grilling |
5460 Walzem Rd (at Midcrown) San Antonio, TX 78218 United States +1 210 656 3228 |
The Mongolian-style barbecue here is probably quite a bit fancier than what the original Genghis Khan ate during his travels. However, it is still a simple, tasty way to prepare spicy and delicious meats. Choose a combination of lamb, beef, pork or chicken along with assorted julienned vegetables and watch as the chefs stir-fry them quickly on the fiery grill. All-you-can-eat meals include soup, spring roll, tea, dessert and a glass of house wine for one fixed price. The strip-mall location won't delight you with grand decorations, but the food should please both your palate and your pocket. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A good place to get some great food, Grady's skips the frills and concentrates on serving tender, juicy barbecue instead. Popular for business meals or family dining, Grady's has personal-size meals and family (or larger) size orders. The brisket will melt in your mouth as the barbeque sauce runs down your chin and the fresh potato salad will remind you of picnics in the park. The beans have a robust, cowboy-style flavor. They are a great pick to go with the hot, spicy sausage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hung Fong is one of San Antonio's oldest Chinese restaurants, and it continues to serve up satisfying Szechuan, Cantonese, Hunan and Mandarin style cuisine year after year. You don't just eat in this restaurant, you experience its aura. American and Taiwanese neon flags exude a dominant presence, while pictures made with huge(and real) butterfly wings rest comfortably behind plexiglas frames. You have to see 'em to believe 'em. The restaurant offers both lunch and dinner specials. At night, order a la carte or from several combination plates starting at $7.79. Family dinners are popular choices and serve from two ($15.49) to six people ($46.19). Beer and wine are served, and child's plates are available for the wee ones. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Aromatic Indian cuisine |

Exotic spices infuse the plentiful and wonderfully aromatic dishes at one of San Antonio's few Indian restaurants. If you're not sure you like Indian cuisine, venture in for lunch. For the uninitiated, the lunch buffet is a bargain at $6.95. You can sample such traditional dishes as beef curry, chicken with spinach, and tandoori chicken. Tandoori dishes are prepared in the restaurant's authentic tandoor, a high-temperature, wood-burning clay oven that cooks everything from chicken to shrimp. When you're ready to expand your horizons and try some more sophisticated Indian cuisine, ask your server for a primer. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help you decide among the many authentic lamb, chicken, seafood and vegetable dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining just does not get more Texan than a cold beer and a good steak, and that is what you get at the Little Rhein. This famous River Walk restaurant is housed in the oldest two-story structure in San Antonio, which was built in 1847. Antique memorabilia decorates the walls and takes you back to an age when Texans sat down to dinner with their six guns. The menu contains a variety of steaks, ranging from filet mignons to T-bones to rib eyes. This upscale eatery in Indianapolis serves up some of the best steak dishes in the city. Porterhouse, Double Porterhouse, Double Cut Filet Mignon, New York Strip - it all features on the menu, and you can whet your appetite beforehand with the seafood appetizers such as Lobster Bisque, Bluepoint Oysters on the Half Shell, and Smoked Pacific Salmon. Among the desserts, your best choice would be the sinfully indulgent Chocolate Velvet Cake - it will prepare you for the toll that dining here is sure to take on your wallet! Review © 2007, Wcities |

For over 30 years, the Old San Francisco Steak House has been a San Antonio tradition, serving some of the finest steak dinners in town. Although the restaurant is well known for its steaks, it has enhanced its menu to include fresh seafood and chicken dishes. One of the unique features of this restaurant is the girl in the red velvet swing. She entertains guests as she swings above them as they enjoy their meals. The peppered steak and 12-ounce rib eye are two of the favorites of local patrons, or try the spicy Jamaican chicken. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A refreshing taste of Old World cooking |
1546 Babcock Rd San Antonio, TX 78229 United States +1 210 366 9523 |
Looking for some Old World German cooking? Then go straight to this Northwest-side delicatessen, which offers family dining and Old World charm, and is always open for a late breakfast, lunch or dinner. The dining is casual, the food delicious and the atmosphere charming. You will find everything from schnitzel and wurst to potato pancakes at the Old World Delicatessen. Step up to the counter and step back in time; the cooking is just like Oma used to make. Dieters beware, though: the rich, creamy desserts are almost decadent, but they are definitely worth trying. Unbelievable chocolate shakes at the lunch counter...and aspirin, too. |

Sure, you can find Pepto-Bismol, aspirin and a myriad of other pharmaceutical needs in this small neighborhood drug store. But it's the lunch counter in back that draws the locals. Plop down on a stool and order a juicy burger or a perfectly prepared BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich with fries. But by all means, order a large chocolate shake. Thick and creamy, they're rumored to be the best in the city and many a patron have agreed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Create different flavored margaritas made out of fresh fruit and have such a large selection that people just keep coming back again and again. While you enjoy your drink, dine on classic Mexican fare such as fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos. Lots of outdoor seating is available overlooking the River Walk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant Italian dining |

One of the most acclaimed Italian restaurants in San Antonio, Paesano's has been a local favorite for decades. Tourists are most familiar with its location on the River Walk, but the one just north of downtown in Lincoln Heights, near the Quarry Marketplace, offers the same great menu in a different atmosphere. Paesano's in Lincoln Heights is relaxed yet sophisticated, a place to see and be seen. Be sure to visit on a nice day during sunset. The west room has a spectacular sunset view overlooking the Quarry Golf Course; it's a view that you would not want to miss, especially with that special someone. You can choose from a variety of dinners including red snapper sautéed with artichokes, mushrooms and white wine; orange roughly with lemon butter and garlic; and shrimp with fra diavolo sauce. Of course, the restaurant would not be the same without its namesake, Gamberi Paesano (Shrimp Paesano), which is served as either an appetizer or a dinner. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you are planning a trip to the Alamo city, there are two things you must eat: any type of authentic Mexican food and Paesano's "Shrimp Paesano." This incredible appetizer/entree is so rich and tasty that you won't know when to stop. Paesano's on the River Walk has a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere; you can sit inside or by the river and browse through an extensive wine list. Don't stop with the Shrimp Paesano, though, because everything on the menu is fresh and scrumptious. The pasta dishes are huge, the pizza is made with fresh, innovative ingredients, and the meats are varied and delicious. If you're dining away from downtown, but still in the mood for Italian food, visit Paesano's at its Quarry location. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A venerable Italian fixture in San Antonio, Paletta's offers an extensive line of imported delicacies, casual lunches and food to go. Although Paletta's is technically a food store, its lunches are legendary and draw quite a crowd. Huge sandwiches, homemade Italian specialties such as lasagna and sausage with peppers, and rich desserts top the menu. After your lunch, be sure to allow time to browse the food section and marvel at the variety. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is the first San Antonio location for Pappadeaux, a Houston-based chain of Cajun and Creole seafood restaurants. The rustically decorated building is huge and always crowded during serving hours, so expect a wait. The ambiance is bustling and lively, however, and the food is served in generous portions. The kitchen serves a wide variety of fresh shrimp, crawfish, oysters, crab and other seafood, which they will prepare fried, blackened or grilled. Cajun dirty rice and red beans and rice are only two of the many side dishes; there are also four varieties of gumbo as well as etouffee and bisques. Desserts include simple Southern favorites such as key lime pie, chocolate praline cheesecake and a banana crepe ice cream sundae. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A meal at this restaurant will have you feeling like you're at a local eatery in Italy. The patio, which is a mélange of olive and oak trees in true alfrescan fashion and adorned by the seasonal live creek, helps recreate the Italian feel. The menu adds to it with different delicious dishes of anitpasti, insalate, pastas and wood-fired pizzas. Popular downtown spot |
111 S Leona St San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 225 6060 |
This seasoned restaurant is popular with both tourists and natives. The festive interior and good food make it a hot spot just about anytime you go, but the lunch crowd is especially fierce; go before 11:30a or expect to wait an hour to get a table. Also, this is one of the few Tex-Mex restaurants in town that is open on Sundays. The food at Pico de Gallo is well made and served with generous portions. Try the crunchy chalupas with spicy beans and loads of toppings, or the carne guisada, which isn't served on a taco, but on a plate with rice and beans. The fajitas are good, and every meal is served with chips and tasty, but not too hot, salsa. From time to time, the restaurant hosts live music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This small Italian restaurant is known for large, well-topped and tasty pizzas. Located right on the River Walk, this eatery has every type of pizza that any connoisseur could ever want. These pizzas come loaded down with toppings; no scrimping on ingredients at this establishment. Several Italian dishes are available as well, including a stuffed flounder that is excellent. The nice selection of desserts to round out your meal, including tiramisu, cannoli and sorbetto, comes from a local bakery and creamery. There's a large amount of outdoor seating right on the River. At times, though, this area can get a little busy with foot traffic. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is one of the more elegant places to eat on the River Walk. As you walk by this restaurant, you cannot help but notice the mission-like colonnade entrance that beckons you to enter. The outdoor patio seating surrounds a beautiful, large wrap-around bar, which anchors this restaurant. The food here is described as eclectic New American and compliments the surroundings nicely. The menu is rounded out with unique selections of pasta, poultry, pork, and top-grade beef. If you are in the mood for something different but a little familiar, Simi's is the place to go. The restaurant overcomes its strip-mall location with a truly elegant setting. A rich red carpet leads to cinnamon-colored booths and chairs around white-clad tables. Traditional Indian music plays softly in the background as waiters move quietly in and out of the kitchen. As with most restaurants that serve Indian cuisine, Simi's offers several selections prepared in an authentic tandoor oven. Try the Tandoori Shrimp ($11.95) or Tandoori Snapper ($9.95). The décor here is something between a rustic ranch house and a polished hacienda. The interior is fairly standard, with booths and tables, but the wrought-iron tables that dot the patio add a comfortable charm. Strategically placed heaters keep the patio warm and wonderful year-round. A full bar serves several draft and bottled beers as well as a good selection of wine. This new Chinese food restaurant, located on the River Walk, boasts a recently refurbished interior but retains an older exterior that belies its young age. Puzzles of Chinese landmarks adorn the walls, and Chinese music is piped in via a boom box. Sze-Chuen touts over 20 daily lunch specials, starting from $3.99. General chicken, kung pao chicken and sweet and sour pork are just a few of the many items on the menu. What Sze-Chuen lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in the quality and amount of food that you get for your money. Texas Land and Cattle is a lesson in Texan. Jeans-clad food servers waltz across the dining room floor. Branding irons, horseshoes (oriented upwards, of course, so the luck does not run out), cowboy boots and chaps decorate the walls. And everything is big, including the booths, the longhorns and the food portions. After an 18-ounce Texas T-Bone, a 16-ounce Cattleman's Ribeye or a 9-ounce Trail Boss Filet, you will be talkin' Texan in no time. This is a funky little spot in the middle of the stereotypically conservative Alamo Heights neighborhood. It serves breakfast and dinner, but is most popular for lunch. The soup-and-sandwich-type lunch menu and daily specials have a decidedly healthy, and sometimes vegetarian, bent. Don't miss the iced herbal tea, the spinach salad or the turkey burger. The dinner specials are also worth a try, especially the grilled empanadas with ground beef and onions and the potato stir-fry, blended with seasoned spinach and fresh tomatoes. The funky cafe found a second home downtown. Just like its uptown twin, this cafe serves breakfast but is most popular for lunch. For dinner though, you'll have to go back uptown. The healthy, vegetarian-friendly lunch menu offers a welcome alternative to the previously limited and unbearable lunch options downtown. While you won't find any Mexican food entrees, the "blue plate" specials and various soups and sandwiches give this spot all the business it can handle. As this location is even smaller than the original location, the crowds pack in early, so plan ahead. Review © 2007, Wcities |
