"Where heaven and health meet"
21 Brees Blvd
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 822 7681
Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables.

Anne Marie's a simple place with humble beginnings and a healthy menu. The restaurant might not be a wow place for a brunch or lunch, but it certainly has your nutritional requirements in mind. Daily specials are hot, literally, and the price is cool. The place is more popular for its banquet rooms at Devonshire, and Anne Marie's catering capabilities are renowned anyway. In the meanwhile, for those interested in a light lunch, which is lighter on your pocket, step into Anne Marie's.

Barn Door Restaurant

Don't let the name fool you
8400 North New Braunfels Ave
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 824 0116
http://www.sawhost.com/barndoor
The hokey name and checkered plastic tablecloths belie the mouthwatering (and pricey) steaks, chicken and seafood at this San Antonio institution. The Barn Door runs its own butcher shop, and every aged cut is tender and juicy. This steakhouse is huge and its atmosphere is casual, with pictures of horses and cowboys telling the story of old Texas. It's equally suited to a business lunch, a first date or a family night out. If you find yourself waiting for a table on the weekend, wander into the bar and check out the horse racing memorabilia. At lunch, try a tenderloin sandwich or a chicken-fried rib eye steak. At dinner, the six-ounce Lady's Filet and the 14-ounce Gentlemen's Ribeye is most tempting. The restaurant also serves a great selection of seafood, chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and quail. If you're dining with a good friend, pour some extra-garlicky Green Goddess dressing on your salad.

527 River Walk
San Antonio, TX 78205

While the city, along with the River Walk for that matter, is overrun with Mexican restaurants, this one distinguishes itself by offering both a beautiful view of the River Walk and a quiet atmosphere. Along with a friendly wait staff, Cafe Ole offers patrons sweet serenades of Mexican mariachis on a nightly basis. The mariachis are one of the defining local Hispanic traditions and really give guests an authentic taste of the culture that makes San Antonio unique. The menu is more Tex-Mex than pure Mexican, but includes tasty fajitas, enchiladas, flautas and quesadillas to name a few selections. This restaurant is also known for its good selection of margaritas.

San Antonio, TX 78229

What it lacks in friendly service, Calcutta makes up for in atmosphere. Hidden behind the Grill on the Hill restaurant in the Medical Center, this unassuming house-turned-coffeehouse welcomes everyone from poets and artists to students and business executives. If this place were any more laid back, it would fall over. Surreal paintings with a religious motif clutter the walls inside, and a couple of fat cats claim squatter's rights on the quaintly mismatched chairs and tables. Espresso, cappuccino, latte and the now-popular chai are served day and night along with breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you're not one for java, several bottled beers are also available.

Casey's Bar-B-Q

Mouth-watering barbeque and smoked turkey
3619 North Panam Expressway
San Antonio, TX 78219
United States
+1 210 212 6400
Casey's has barbecue so good that even the President of the United States has eaten there. This restaurant serves up spicy, flavorful brisket and truly exceptional smoked turkey along with other local favorites such as smoked sausage and barbeque sandwiches. The side dishes are a cut above what is served at most places: the pinto beans are seasoned delicately, and the potato salad is by far one of the tastiest around, with crunchy bits of pickle, yet no mustard-heavy aftertaste. Breakfast tacos are served daily and lunch is served after 11am. Catering is available too. The décor is rustic and Western-themed, featuring genuine saddles, ropes and cowboy memorabilia. Wooden floors and plank tables lend to the Texas ambiance. Casey's delicious barbecue sauce is on every table, so you can kick up the flavor another notch if you please.

Crabby Jacks is a popular place with the happy-hour crowd, the dinner crowd and the late-night crowd, and it succeeds in catering to all three. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, accented with red lights and lots of beer gear. Pull up a stool at one of the three large bars or grab a booth for drinks and dinner. The menu is laden with seafood items including steamed, fried and broiled selections of fish, crab, shrimp, lobster and oysters. +1 210 224 0026
http://www.dickslastresort.com
This is by far one of the rowdiest restaurants on the River Walk, so diners can expect loud music, great food, cold beer and steely attitudes from the waitstaff. Do not take your in-laws or your children; unless, of course, they can swig a longneck and crack crab legs with the best of 'em. The food here is good and has a definite Cajun flavor. All entrees either arrive in a bucket (crawfish and crab legs) or on top of butcher paper (hamburgers, ribs, chicken). It's messy, but fun. The crowd tends to get a little crazier the later it gets, as the restaurant gradually morphs into a full-fledged bar with live music every night.

This inexpensive, friendly, family-owned-and-operated Mexican food favorite is the perfect spot to recuperate after a hard night on the town. It is also a great spot to meet friends and hang out. The mariachis, which play every Saturday and Sunday, are sure to lift your spirits and can make even the grumpiest person show a grin. The wait staff is constantly busy, but they are friendly and speedy. The Menudo is reputed to cure the worst hangover, and the Huevos Rancheros are legendary. Try the Tacos Loco, which come filled with potato, eggs, beans and sausage, or the amazing enchiladas. No matter what you order, you will leave with a smile on your face and a full tummy.

Located just south of downtown in the area aptly named Southtown, this artsy little coffeehouse is small, but it is a favorite with the locals. It features more coffee drinks than you can imagine, plus a fairly decent breakfast and lunch menu.

Exhibits of local artists' works grace the walls and rotate on a regular basis, and you can usually expect live music on the weekends. The large porch proves popular during the fall and spring months.

Unfortunately stuck in a strip mall, the Fox and Hound offers a casual but upscale English pub atmosphere, with a few minor adjustments. Watch a sporting event while enjoying tasty food and choosing from a wide selection of beers and ales from around the world. Hunting scenes (foxes and hounds, not guns and deer, thank you) decorate the richly colored walls, while 33 large-screen TV's broadcast sporting events and music videos. Game rooms flank the main room and bar and feature "civilized" entertainment such as billiards, darts and shuffleboard. The kitchen is open all day and serves up generous portions of (non-English) food such as Grand Champion Wings, Philadelphia Chicken Sandwich and Hawaiian Pizza. The service leaves a little to be desired, but overall, you are likely to have a good time.

The Mongolian-style barbecue here is probably quite a bit fancier than what the original Genghis Khan ate during his travels. However, it is still a simple, tasty way to prepare spicy and delicious meats. Choose a combination of lamb, beef, pork or chicken along with assorted julienned vegetables and watch as the chefs stir-fry them quickly on the fiery grill. All-you-can-eat meals include soup, spring roll, tea, dessert and a glass of house wine for one fixed price. The strip-mall location won't delight you with grand decorations, but the food should please both your palate and your pocket.

Enjoy a wide selection of both imported and local beers on tap while watching the crowds pass by from your patio table. The menu is definitely pub-oriented, but its offerings are rather tasty. Expect the usual steaks, fish and chips and sandwiches. While the food is good, the fun atmosphere, billiard tables, dart board, video games and large beer selection are the main attractions. Mad Dogs is open late, and thus is a good place to end your evening.

Since 1973, this restaurant has been a favorite place for celebrations and good times. The costumed servers are determined to make your visit an enjoyable one: the restaurant's motto is "Dine laughing," and the servers take it seriously. The menu features standard American fare, including steaks, rib eyes, grilled seafood and chicken, all served with fresh baked bread as well as soup and salad from the converted 1952 MG roadster salad bar. The Roman Orgy feast is a vast quantity of brisket, smoked chicken, baby back ribs and mounds of fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat it in the Orgy Pit, the Mineshaft or one of the other themed seating areas. Whatever you do, go determined to have a good time. Magic Time Machine draws a young crowd of diners and is a favored site for birthday parties. Eat, drink and be merry while being served by characters from popular films. The Malt House has been serving San Antonio for the last 50 years. It has such a diverse menu—you can get a great burger, fries and a soft drink or enjoy one of the thick, rich chocolate malts. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, the enchiladas with fresh tortillas are hard to top. If you want something more southern, try the fried chicken. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is what you would expect from a small neighborhood restaurant.

Located in Market Square, this San Antonio oldie-but-goodie has been a favorite of both locals and tourists since 1946. The Mexican specialties such as Chile Rellenos, Huevos Rancheros and the huge combination platters are excellent, and the atmosphere truly takes you south of the border. Nowhere else will you be serenaded by mariachis while enjoying chorizo and eggs or an eight-ounce rib eye. But be sure to have a tip ready for the entertainers; they want to enjoy a meal later as well. Finally, do not miss the panaderia (bakery) for fresh breakfast pastries, Mexican breads and sweet rolls.

One of the prettier restaurants on the River Walk, Michelino's has an excellent seating area that seems to compliment the surroundings. The food here is solidly Italian, with a North Italian country appeal. The pastas come accompanied with fresh poultry, veal, beef and seafood with flavorful sauces. If they all look good and you can't decide, then try the Angel Hair Di Mare with a roasted garlic cream sauce. The restaurant has an excellent wine list, as well, which does include some affordable selections. This place is an excellent choice for business dinners or just a lovely evening out.

One of the most acclaimed Italian restaurants in San Antonio, Paesano's has been a local favorite for decades. Tourists are most familiar with its location on the River Walk, but the one just north of downtown in Lincoln Heights, near the Quarry Marketplace, offers the same great menu in a different atmosphere. Paesano's in Lincoln Heights is relaxed yet sophisticated, a place to see and be seen. Be sure to visit on a nice day during sunset. The west room has a spectacular sunset view overlooking the Quarry Golf Course; it's a view that you would not want to miss, especially with that special someone. You can choose from a variety of dinners including red snapper sautéed with artichokes, mushrooms and white wine; orange roughly with lemon butter and garlic; and shrimp with fra diavolo sauce. Of course, the restaurant would not be the same without its namesake, Gamberi Paesano (Shrimp Paesano), which is served as either an appetizer or a dinner.

This seasoned restaurant is popular with both tourists and natives. The festive interior and good food make it a hot spot just about anytime you go, but the lunch crowd is especially fierce; go before 11:30a or expect to wait an hour to get a table. Also, this is one of the few Tex-Mex restaurants in town that is open on Sundays.

The food at Pico de Gallo is well made and served with generous portions. Try the crunchy chalupas with spicy beans and loads of toppings, or the carne guisada, which isn't served on a taco, but on a plate with rice and beans. The fajitas are good, and every meal is served with chips and tasty, but not too hot, salsa.

This Texas steakhouse, with its mesquite-grilled steaks, chicken and shrimp, has quickly become a favorite among San Antonio's business and leisure diners. John Wayne would have felt right at home here in this large but cozy steakhouse, reminiscent of a modern-day ranch house. While you're waiting to be seated, grab a handful of peanuts and start munching. Don't worry about the empty shells, though; that's what the floor is there for. A full bar and hearty wine list complement the beef-oriented menu. Start off with a cup of steak soup and then cut into a 16-ounce TXLC Smoked Sirloin, an 18-ounce Texas T-bone or Steak Mexicano and Shrimp Diablo.

Thai Kitchen

Authentic Thai food

For more than a decade, owner Sam and his family have been offering quality, reasonably priced Thai cuisine. Located in a small strip center, Thai Kitchen has been a winner of several local critics' awards. The menu choices may make your head spin, but you can't go wrong with an order of Tum Yun Goon (hot shrimp soup) followed with Yum Nah (a steak salad). For dessert, a cup of coconut ice cream should put out the fire and salve the taste buds. There restaurant also houses a full bar, which includes Thai beer among its offerings.

The Golden Star Cafe

Late-night Chinese and American just west of downtown
821 W Commerce St
San Antonio, TX 78207
United States
+1 210 223 1681
It used to be San Antonio's only all-night Chinese food place, but now the Golden Star closes after the late-night club people go home. Located just west of downtown, it serves Asian food and some American dishes, too. The restaurant is a revamped diner with large red dragons along the walls, a combination that gives it an Asian-American feel. Try the almond chicken, served with an excellent sauce made of a thin, soy gravy, or go for the beef and broccoli, which comes with the steamed broccoli served on the side and is not covered in sauce like it is at many places.

Twin Sisters Bakery & Cafe

Funky little cafe in the heart of the city
6322 N New Braunfels Ave
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 822 2265
http://hotx.com/twinsister/
This is a funky little spot in the middle of the stereotypically conservative Alamo Heights neighborhood. It serves breakfast and dinner, but is most popular for lunch. The soup-and-sandwich-type lunch menu and daily specials have a decidedly healthy, and sometimes vegetarian, bent. Don't miss the iced herbal tea, the spinach salad or the turkey burger. The dinner specials are also worth a try, especially the grilled empanadas with ground beef and onions and the potato stir-fry, blended with seasoned spinach and fresh tomatoes. If you have a sweet tooth, a warm snickerdoodle cookie is the way to go. Twin Sisters draws a crowd early, so plan to wait for a table.

Twin Sisters Bakery & Cafe-Downtown

The funky eatery goes downtown
124 Broadway

The funky cafe found a second home downtown. Just like its uptown twin, this cafe serves breakfast but is most popular for lunch. For dinner though, you'll have to go back uptown. The healthy, vegetarian-friendly lunch menu offers a welcome alternative to the previously limited and unbearable lunch options downtown. While you won't find any Mexican food entrees, the "blue plate" specials and various soups and sandwiches give this spot all the business it can handle. As this location is even smaller than the original location, the crowds pack in early, so plan ahead.

Van's Chinese Seafood Restaurant

When you just can't decide
3214 Broadway
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 828 8449
In the mood for sushi? Go to Van's. Moo Goo Gai Pan? Try Van's. Spring rolls? Van's. This multi-faceted restaurant in old Alamo Heights deftly blends Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine in an unhurried atmosphere. Van's serves a steady business rush at lunch and draws a crowd as varied as its dinner menu. The mostly nondescript décor is made interesting by a wall of wine bottles offset by a fish tank-lined wall.

This popular little deli has distinguished itself by offering a classic menu with a twist. Beyond the usual hoagie, offerings include WD's signature spinach chicken sandwich, tomato and basil soup, homemade cakes and pies, and a number of daily specials. The health conscious can opt for the reduced fat or non-fat sandwiches and salads. The ambiance is relaxed and encourages lingering. A rotating exhibit of local artwork adorns the walls, and a stack of local newspapers provides delightful diversions if you should be dining alone.

Southwestern cuisine on the River Walk

San Antonio, TX 78205

Although this is one of the only restaurants on the River Walk that opens for breakfast, it is for lunch or dinner that you should visit. Enjoy tasty enchiladas and chicken dishes, or a huge spinach salad with grilled salmon. Be sure to save room for dessert, too. The lively interior, which contains only a moderate amount of seating, opens to an expansive riverside patio populated with colorful, mosaic-tiled tables and scurrying sparrows. A popular spot among locals and tourists alike, the place fills early; large groups should call ahead to make reservations. The restaurant also has a fairly large banquet area for private functions.
