Cajun cookin' at its best |
1289 Southwest Loop 410 San Antonio, TX 78227 United States +1 210 674 0019 http://www.acadianacafe.com/? |
For authentic Cajun cookin', this is the place to go in San Antonio. Located on the far west side of the city, the huge restaurant plays host to hordes of locals craving authentic Cajun cuisine, seafood and catfish. As this is definitely a family restaurant, you can expect child- and parent-friendly touches such as lids and straws for milk glasses, a plentiful supply of saltines to munch on, and crayons as a diversion. Housed in what resembles a massive two-story cedar house, the restaurant boasts a large porch and a cavernous interior. The quick and friendly service more than compensates for a table setting that leaves something to be desired (vinyl cloths, heavy wooden chairs and tables balanced on sugar packets for stability). Cajun specialties such as red beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya abound, and all are wonderfully prepared. Should you crave seafood, any of the shrimp entrees can't be beat. For fish lovers, be sure to try the famous catfish. Side dishes include expected choices such as coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies and basic vegetables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine while eating in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Alsatian offers an excellent earth-and-sea platter consisting of filet mignon, fried catfish and breaded shrimp. Not in the mood for steak? Try the Popeye The Sailor's Plate, a platter of fried catfish, fried shrimp and fries. If you are looking for something from the grill, then you may want to try the Texas-size T-Bone or the Tex-Mex combo, a rib eye served with two enchiladas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don't let the name fool you |
8400 North New Braunfels Ave San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 824 0116 http://www.sawhost.com/barndoor |
The hokey name and checkered plastic tablecloths belie the mouthwatering (and pricey) steaks, chicken and seafood at this San Antonio institution. The Barn Door runs its own butcher shop, and every aged cut is tender and juicy. This steakhouse is huge and its atmosphere is casual, with pictures of horses and cowboys telling the story of old Texas. It's equally suited to a business lunch, a first date or a family night out. If you find yourself waiting for a table on the weekend, wander into the bar and check out the horse racing memorabilia. At lunch, try a tenderloin sandwich or a chicken-fried rib eye steak. At dinner, the six-ounce Lady's Filet and the 14-ounce Gentlemen's Ribeye is most tempting. The restaurant also serves a great selection of seafood, chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and quail. If you're dining with a good friend, pour some extra-garlicky Green Goddess dressing on your salad. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hop a trolley from the River Walk for something different at this brewpub. The huge copper brewing tanks here figure prominently and a sizable patio offers a view of the tranquil end of the River. Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends. Looking for wild game, then look to Bolo's, located in the Omni Hotel. It offers a diverse menu. From the rotisserie, you will find free-range chicken with potato gratin and mushroom sauce, Long Island duck served with wild rice. The herb-rubbed pork loin with brandied apples and French onion risotto is always a favorite. If steaks are more to your liking, then try the bone-in strip steak with an ancho chili sauce and potato gratin or maybe the center-cut filet mignon with garlic butter and vegetable ratatouille. The restaurant also serves breakfast and lunch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Steaks, seafood and Southwestern specialties from deep in the "haute" of Texas. Located on San Antonio's famous River Walk, Boudro's is often the restaurant for spotting visiting celebrities. Don't miss the fresh Guacamole (made tableside), the Prickly Pear Margaritas or the blackened Prime Rib. And be sure to dine with friends so you can order one of every dessert to share. Boudro's is a favorite among locals and tourists alike and books quickly. Dining is available indoors, riverside, and on river barges with advance reservations. Coffee, cats and chai |
7920 Fredericksburg Rd (behind Grill on the Hill restaurant) San Antonio, TX 78229 United States +1 210 692 9600 |
What it lacks in friendly service, Calcutta makes up for in atmosphere. Hidden behind the Grill on the Hill restaurant in the Medical Center, this unassuming house-turned-coffeehouse welcomes everyone from poets and artists to students and business executives. If this place were any more laid back, it would fall over. Surreal paintings with a religious motif clutter the walls inside, and a couple of fat cats claim squatter's rights on the quaintly mismatched chairs and tables. Espresso, cappuccino, latte and the now-popular chai are served day and night along with breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you're not one for java, several bottled beers are also available. A San Antonio favorite |
1900 Blanco San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 735 3552 |
This burger joint on the city's near-Northside has been cranking out burgers for 23 years. Some people may think that a burger is a burger, but they probably haven't been to Chris Madrid's. A consistent winner of various critics' polls over the years, the restaurant won the 2006 local newspaper's Best Burger award.Like a lot of local burger places, this spot is decidedly low-tech and high-taste. The Cheddar CZ is its signature meal, but you might want to try the devastatingly good bean burger, too. Add an order of fries and a cold beer, and you are in hamburger heaven. True Texas barbecue on the River Walk |
111 West Crockett San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 229 1941 http://countyline.com/ |
This is the kind of barbecue you dream about. The County Line serves up a variety of tender meat, slow-cooked for 18 hours, that literally falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth. Located on the River Walk, this restaurant not only offers a spectacular view, but also affords downtown visitors an opportunity to enjoy the "state meal" without venturing far from their hotels. Not a beef eater? Don't despair; the barbecue chicken, turkey, pork and sausage are equally tasty. All entrees come served with generous portions of sides, including classic potato salad, beans and coleslaw. For dessert, be sure to try one of the fruit cobblers. A full bar is available, but real Texans drink ice cold beer with their barbecue. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crabby Jacks is a popular place with the happy-hour crowd, the dinner crowd and the late-night crowd, and it succeeds in catering to all three. With its weather-beaten wood and tank of live lobsters, this bar/restaurant looks like it belongs on a beach more than it does fronting a strip center. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, accented with red lights and lots of beer gear. Pull up a stool at one of the three large bars or grab a booth for drinks and dinner. The menu is laden with seafood items including steamed, fried and broiled selections of fish, crab, shrimp, lobster and oysters. If you don't like shellfish, you can choose from several beef, chicken and pasta entrées. Live singers are featured every night; a DJ takes care of the tunes on Sunday nights before the live performances get started. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Raucous Time on the River Walk |
406 Navarro San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 224 0026 http://www.dickslastresort.com |
This is by far one of the rowdiest restaurants on the River Walk, so diners can expect loud music, great food, cold beer and steely attitudes from the waitstaff. Do not take your in-laws or your children; unless, of course, they can swig a longneck and crack crab legs with the best of 'em. The food here is good and has a definite Cajun flavor. All entrees either arrive in a bucket (crawfish and crab legs) or on top of butcher paper (hamburgers, ribs, chicken). It's messy, but fun. The crowd tends to get a little crazier the later it gets, as the restaurant gradually morphs into a full-fledged bar with live music every night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Energetic and fun, EZ's serves thick burgers, truly delicious shakes, fresh salads, and pizza that is made to order and baked in a wood-fueled oven. The curly fries and chicken strips are favorites among the kids. The decor is colorful and modern, with the oven and grill dominating the center of the restaurant. Table seating comes in the form of comfortable booths, while bar seating lets you watch the staff make pizzas and blend shakes from Blue Bell ice cream. Unfortunately stuck in a strip mall, the Fox and Hound offers a casual but upscale English pub atmosphere, with a few minor adjustments. Watch a sporting event while enjoying tasty food and choosing from a wide selection of beers and ales from around the world. Hunting scenes (foxes and hounds, not guns and deer, thank you) decorate the richly colored walls, while 33 large-screen TV's broadcast sporting events and music videos. Game rooms flank the main room and bar and feature "civilized" entertainment such as billiards, darts and shuffleboard. The kitchen is open all day and serves up generous portions of (non-English) food such as Grand Champion Wings, Philadelphia Chicken Sandwich and Hawaiian Pizza. The service leaves a little to be desired, but overall, you are likely to have a good time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A resort as elegant as the Westin La Cantera would be expected to offer a restaurant as lovely. Mark Miller, Santa Fe's chef extraordinaire, designed the menu, which has received continual raves since the restaurant's opening. Try the Shrimp Corncakes or the Gazpacho before diving into to perfectly prepared steak and seafood entrees. The wine list is as impressive as the service. The only thing better is the panoramic view of the Hill Country, a true crowning touch. Francesca's is popular with locals as well as resort guests, so reservations are highly recommended. A good place to get some great food, Grady's skips the frills and concentrates on serving tender, juicy barbecue instead. Popular for business meals or family dining, Grady's has personal-size meals and family (or larger) size orders. Dining just does not get more Texan than a cold beer and a good steak, and that is what you get at the Little Rhein. This famous River Walk restaurant is housed in the oldest two-story structure in San Antonio, which was built in 1847. Antique memorabilia decorates the walls and takes you back to an age when Texans sat down to dinner with their six guns. The menu contains a variety of steaks, ranging from filet mignons to T-bones to rib eyes. All steaks are served with salad, baked potato and "Texas Caviar" (deliciously seasoned, baked black-eyed peas). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Texas Land and Cattle is a lesson in Texan. Jeans-clad food servers waltz across the dining room floor. Branding irons, horseshoes (oriented upwards, of course, so the luck does not run out), cowboy boots and chaps decorate the walls. And everything is big, including the booths, the longhorns and the food portions. After an 18-ounce Texas T-Bone, a 16-ounce Cattleman's Ribeye or a 9-ounce Trail Boss Filet, you will be talkin' Texan in no time. If red meat does not strike your fancy, try the spicy Mesquite-Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad or the TXLC Salmon Steak. Review © 2007, Wcities |
