Blue Star Brewing Company

A brew with a view

(in the Blue Star Arts Complex)
San Antonio, TX 78210
United States

Hop a trolley from the River Walk for something different at this brewpub. The huge copper brewing tanks here figure prominently and a sizable patio offers a view of the tranquil end of the River. Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends.

Fox & Hound English Pub & Grille

English pub with a twist
12651 Vance Jackson Rd
Ste 110
San Antonio, TX 78230
United States

Unfortunately stuck in a strip mall, the Fox and Hound offers a casual but upscale English pub atmosphere, with a few minor adjustments. Watch a sporting event while enjoying tasty food and choosing from a wide selection of beers and ales from around the world. Hunting scenes (foxes and hounds, not guns and deer, thank you) decorate the richly colored walls, while 33 large-screen TV's broadcast sporting events and music videos. Game rooms flank the main room and bar and feature "civilized" entertainment such as billiards, darts and shuffleboard. The kitchen is open all day and serves up generous portions of (non-English) food such as Grand Champion Wings, Philadelphia Chicken Sandwich and Hawaiian Pizza. The service leaves a little to be desired, but overall, you are likely to have a good time.

Mad Dogs

Large, fun bar with several pool tables
123 Losoya St
Riverwalk
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States

Look for the statue of the Scotsman in full regalia to locate this fun bar with a British/Scottish theme on the River Walk. Enjoy a wide selection of both imported and local beers on tap while watching the crowds pass by from your patio table. The menu is definitely pub-oriented, but its offerings are rather tasty. Expect the usual steaks, fish and chips and sandwiches. While the food is good, the fun atmosphere, billiard tables, dart board, video games and large beer selection are the main attractions. Mad Dogs is open late, and thus is a good place to end your evening.

Mi Tierra Cafe

Classic Mexican food and bakery, open 24/7
218 Produce Row
(In Market Square)
San Antonio, TX 78207

Located in Market Square, this San Antonio oldie-but-goodie has been a favorite of both locals and tourists since 1946. The Mexican specialties such as Chile Rellenos, Huevos Rancheros and the huge combination platters are excellent, and the atmosphere truly takes you south of the border. Nowhere else will you be serenaded by mariachis while enjoying chorizo and eggs or an eight-ounce rib eye. But be sure to have a tip ready for the entertainers; they want to enjoy a meal later as well. Finally, do not miss the panaderia (bakery) for fresh breakfast pastries, Mexican breads and sweet rolls.
