"Where heaven and health meet" |
21 Brees Blvd San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 822 7681 |
Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You'll never realize when you've reached inside as the decor incorporates the outdoors look with paintings of skies and nature. The interiors also extend to the courtyard, complete with a little pond and greenery. Seat yourself on one of the wrought iron chairs and take your pick from the Tex-Mex menu on offer. Sample the various tortillas, chips and fajitas. Don't forget to taste the apple-cinnamon empanadas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine while eating in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Alsatian offers an excellent earth-and-sea platter consisting of filet mignon, fried catfish and breaded shrimp. Not in the mood for steak? Try the Popeye The Sailor's Plate, a platter of fried catfish, fried shrimp and fries. If you are looking for something from the grill, then you may want to try the Texas-size T-Bone or the Tex-Mex combo, a rib eye served with two enchiladas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quaint Mexican Restaurant on the River Walk |
527 River Walk San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 2939 |
While the city, along with the River Walk for that matter, is overrun with Mexican restaurants, this one distinguishes itself by offering both a beautiful view of the River Walk and a quiet atmosphere. Along with a friendly wait staff, Cafe Ole offers patrons sweet serenades of Mexican mariachis on a nightly basis. The mariachis are one of the defining local Hispanic traditions and really give guests an authentic taste of the culture that makes San Antonio unique. The menu is more Tex-Mex than pure Mexican, but includes tasty fajitas, enchiladas, flautas and quesadillas to name a few selections. This restaurant is also known for its good selection of margaritas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Tex-Mex food on the River Walk |
430 East Commerce St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 226 6718 http://casa-rio.com/ |
Casa Rio was the first restaurant on the River Walk and is still a must if you have never eaten riverside. With colorful décor, inside and outside seating, and a prime location for people-watching, this restaurant is a favorite among both tourists and locals. Add potent, thirst-quenching margaritas, waitresses bustling about in Mexican sundresses, and Mexican favorites such as enchiladas and tamales, and you have the makings of the classic Tex-Mex dining experience. Because no reservations are taken and this is a hot spot, you may want to arrive a little early to avoid long lines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

52 different margaritas |
2026 Babcock Rd San Antonio, TX 78229 United States +1 210 615 7000 http://www.cha-chas.com |
The festively named Cha Cha's, located in the heart of the Medical Center area, is big on atmosphere. The decor ranges from traditional and somewhat boring to elegant and quaint. For a romantic dinner, ask for a table in the gazebo section. Each secluded table is surrounded by a white wrought-iron dome laced with (ahem, plastic) ivy. However, after a few of this place's 52 varieties of margaritas, you won't care. Expect to find the usual Tex-Mex favorites: enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. The second Cha Cha's location is at 5616 Bandera Road in San Antonio (+1 210 681 2066). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican cuisine made fun |
18008 US Hwy 281 N San Antonio, TX 78232 United States +1 210 545 0300 |
The Austin, Texas landmark finally made its way a little closer to the border. Chuy's boasts decor that could most politely be called kitschy: painted wooden fish hanging from the ceiling, an enormous jalapeno pinata and framed black-and-white photos of other Mexican restaurants in the city, to name a few of the oddities. The food is delicious and, thankfully, not mainstream. Enjoy chicken enchiladas made with blue corn tortillas, "big as yo' face" burritos and the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo (a platter of oversized servings of enchiladas, tacos and queso). Inexpensive Mexican cafe |
521 East Woodlawn San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 734 8964 |
This inexpensive, friendly, family-owned-and-operated Mexican food favorite is the perfect spot to recuperate after a hard night on the town. It is also a great spot to meet friends and hang out. The mariachis, which play every Saturday and Sunday, are sure to lift your spirits and can make even the grumpiest person show a grin. The wait staff is constantly busy, but they are friendly and speedy. The Menudo is reputed to cure the worst hangover, and the Huevos Rancheros are legendary. Try the Tacos Loco, which come filled with potato, eggs, beans and sausage, or the amazing enchiladas. No matter what you order, you will leave with a smile on your face and a full tummy. Situated near the border of the beautiful historic village of La Villita, this restaurant serves pure Mexican food with an ambience to match. Tall doors, high walls and Mexican movie posters, all contribute to create a southern look. Feast on homemade food - Spanish Rice, Bean Pot Soup and Fajita Platters. Famous for their puffy tacos, Henry's also offers a large selection of entrees. Some of the most requested items on the menu are the sizzling fajitas, which come in both chicken and beef varieties and are served on a hot skillet; and the Lopez Monterrey, a special tomato sauce-flavored whole chicken breast topped with cheddar and Monterrey jack cheese. Among the other delights on the Henry's menu are the enchilada dinners, which come in cheese, picadillo or shredded chicken flavors. Authentic Mexican food |
606 West Ave San Antonio, TX 78201 United States +1 210 732 5222 http://www.jacala.com/ |
Escape the stresses of everyday work life by having a puffy taco and a margarita with your friends. The exotic ambiance of Jacala Mexican Restaurant invites you to relax. Wooden floors and ceilings provide a rustic, antique look. Plants surround the room as if you were in an outdoor paradise. A large patio outside inspires fond memories of warm summer nights. If you love spicy food, try the Chile Relleno Dinner. You will have a large, stuffed Poblano Pepper with picadillo, salsa ranchera, guacamole salad, and beans and rice. If traditional Mexican cuisine is more up your alley, try the carne guisada or the famous Jacala Dinner (cheese enchiladas, beef puffy taco, chile con queso and rice and beans). Salads, sandwiches, tacos, enchilada plates and short orders supplement the dinner plates. Don't forget to try their Original ORO margarita (Cuervo 1800 and Cointreau on the rocks) and the Sangria Swirl (frozen margarita with a little Yago Sangria). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mayan ruins in San Antonio? |
121 North Zarzamora St San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 433 0111 |
Don't let the name fool you, as Karam's offers some of the best Mexican food in town. Cheery yellow tables and red chairs are complemented by piñatas hanging from the ceiling, and an authentic Mexican trio plays music on Friday and Saturday nights. If you discovered Karam's long enough ago, you may have heard Selena (yes, that Selena) and the Dinos perform here live. After dinner, walk off the enchiladas, puffy tacos and margaritas among the Mayan "ruins" in the back. Be sure to throw a penny in the fountain and make a wish that they never change the cheese nachos recipe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is one of San Antonio's best-known Mexican restaurants, and for good reason. Both the food and the beverages are excellent. The margaritas will knock your socks off; be sure to enjoy one on the large, shaded patio. For Mexican cuisine, La Fogata sets an excellent standard with green enchiladas and queso flameado that cannot be beat. Other specialties include the garlic-heavy pollo loco, quesadillas and chile rellenos. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditonal Mexican cuisine |
2415 N Main Ave (1 block south of Woodlawn Dr) San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 733 0621 http://www.lafondaonmain.com |
This near-Northside restaurant offers casual dining with an authentic Mexican taste. Close to San Antonio College, it is located at the junction of Main Street and Craig Place in a modest building with indoor and outdoor seating. The food is more complicated than that offered at a standard taco shop: one is more likely to find black beans than the ordinary refried pintos and the entrees often include grilled chicken or steaks with authentic sauces. A full bar is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Award-winning Mexican food |
4223 Blanco Rd San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 732 6017 |
In a city where Mexican food reigns supreme, this restaurant is one of the kings. But Los Barrios doesn't rely on formality—the menu promotes eating tacos, tostados, tortillas, and flautas with your fingers. The restaurant's large seating capacity is made homier with traditional colors and wall art, large windows and lots of lush green plants. A well-stocked bar and live music Friday-Sunday evenings help make the wait for a table a little more bearable. With a comprehensive menu offering everything from tacos and tamales to cabrito and cod, it's hard to decide what to order. However, you can't go wrong with the Classic Enchilada Assortment, which offers enchiladas prepared five different ways. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Authentic Mexican atmosphere |
115 South Zarzamora St San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 227 1187 |
The Malt House has been serving San Antonio for the last 50 years. It has such a diverse menu—you can get a great burger, fries and a soft drink or enjoy one of the thick, rich chocolate malts. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, the enchiladas with fresh tortillas are hard to top. If you want something more southern, try the fried chicken. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is what you would expect from a small neighborhood restaurant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Mexican food and bakery, open 24/7 |
218 Produce Row (In Market Square) San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 225 1262 http://www.mitierracafe.com |
Located in Market Square, this San Antonio oldie-but-goodie has been a favorite of both locals and tourists since 1946. The Mexican specialties such as Chile Rellenos, Huevos Rancheros and the huge combination platters are excellent, and the atmosphere truly takes you south of the border. Nowhere else will you be serenaded by mariachis while enjoying chorizo and eggs or an eight-ounce rib eye. But be sure to have a tip ready for the entertainers; they want to enjoy a meal later as well. Finally, do not miss the panaderia (bakery) for fresh breakfast pastries, Mexican breads and sweet rolls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Mexican food and real fruit margaritas on the River Walk |
415 E Commerce St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 224 9951 |
The River Walk boasts a disproportionate number of Mexican restaurants. So, what does one do to stand out from the crowd? Create different flavored margaritas made out of fresh fruit and have such a large selection that people just keep coming back again and again. While you enjoy your drink, dine on classic Mexican fare such as fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos. Lots of outdoor seating is available overlooking the River Walk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Taking its menu a step beyond the expected fare, Paloma Blanca features enticing chicken and beef dishes, delicious soups and more in addition to the usual enchiladas, tostadas and quesadillas. A full bar offers a killer margarita, so beware! Paloma Blanca draws lots of locals and plenty of kids, too. This is an all-around excellent choice for Mexican cuisine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular downtown spot |
111 S Leona St San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 225 6060 |
This seasoned restaurant is popular with both tourists and natives. The festive interior and good food make it a hot spot just about anytime you go, but the lunch crowd is especially fierce; go before 11:30a or expect to wait an hour to get a table. Also, this is one of the few Tex-Mex restaurants in town that is open on Sundays. The food at Pico de Gallo is well made and served with generous portions. Try the crunchy chalupas with spicy beans and loads of toppings, or the carne guisada, which isn't served on a taco, but on a plate with rice and beans. The fajitas are good, and every meal is served with chips and tasty, but not too hot, salsa. From time to time, the restaurant hosts live music. Review © 2007, Wcities |
