Boardwalk Bistro

Multicultural cuisine with live music
4001 Broadway
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 824 0100
This little restaurant is tucked away so well, you almost don't notice it. The multicultural cuisine makes decisions a challenge. Pasta, tapas, seafood, Mediterranean specialties and vegetarian dishes populate the menu. If you indulge, the award-winning wine list is extensive and offers several choices for even the most discriminating palate.

Live entertainment, usually jazz music, is featured each Friday night.

A more limited, less expensive menu is available for lunch.

Candlelight Coffeehouse & Wine Bar

Coffee, wine and sinful desserts
3011 N St. Mary's St
San Antonio, TX 78212
United States
+1 210 738 0099
If you don't love sinful desserts, delicious coffee and fine wines, then perhaps you should choose another place. Otherwise, enjoy them all while curled up on a big comfy couch, poised at an antique table, or relaxing on a shaded patio. This coffeehouse and wine bar is one of the best kept secrets in the city. As is common in this part of town, Candlelight draws a mixed crowd. For a conservative city, this establishment is decidedly gay friendly.

Chris Madrid's Nachos and Burgers

A San Antonio favorite
1900 Blanco
San Antonio, TX 78212
United States
+1 210 735 3552
This burger joint on the city's near-Northside has been cranking out burgers for 23 years. Some people may think that a burger is a burger, but they probably haven't been to Chris Madrid's. A consistent winner of various critics' polls over the years, the restaurant won the 2006 local newspaper's Best Burger award.Like a lot of local burger places, this spot is decidedly low-tech and high-taste. The Cheddar CZ is its signature meal, but you might want to try the devastatingly good bean burger, too. Add an order of fries and a cold beer, and you are in hamburger heaven.

Earl Abel's

This restaurant offers casual family dining at reasonable prices and is a favorite among the locals. For that down-home cooking—the kind your mother used to make—you must try the fried chicken, pot roast or fried catfish dinners. For dessert, try a slice of the triple-layer German chocolate or coconut cake. If it's pie you want, the coconut cream pie is quite tempting.

El Milagrito Cafe

Inexpensive Mexican cafe
521 East Woodlawn
San Antonio, TX 78212
United States
+1 210 734 8964
This inexpensive, friendly, family-owned-and-operated Mexican food favorite is the perfect spot to recuperate after a hard night on the town. It is also a great spot to meet friends and hang out. The mariachis, which play every Saturday and Sunday, are sure to lift your spirits and can make even the grumpiest person show a grin. The wait staff is constantly busy, but they are friendly and speedy. The Menudo is reputed to cure the worst hangover, and the Huevos Rancheros are legendary. Try the Tacos Loco, which come filled with potato, eggs, beans and sausage, or the amazing enchiladas. No matter what you order, you will leave with a smile on your face and a full tummy.

Hung Fong Chinese Restaurant

Most interesting atmosphere
3624 Broadway St
(near Witte Museum)
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 822 9211
Hung Fong is one of San Antonio's oldest Chinese restaurants, and it continues to serve up satisfying Szechuan, Cantonese, Hunan and Mandarin style cuisine year after year. You don't just eat in this restaurant, you experience its aura. American and Taiwanese neon flags exude a dominant presence, while pictures made with huge(and real) butterfly wings rest comfortably behind plexiglas frames. You have to see 'em to believe 'em. The restaurant offers both lunch and dinner specials. At night, order a la carte or from several combination plates starting at $7.79. Family dinners are popular choices and serve from two ($15.49) to six people ($46.19). Beer and wine are served, and child's plates are available for the wee ones.

King's Palace

Excellent Chinese food in the Brackenridge area
3304 Broadway St
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 824 6878
King's Palace is located two blocks from the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, just north of downtown. It has great food and friendly service. The restaurant is simple and clean, with sections separated by large fish tanks containing beautiful exotic fish. The menu has all of the usual Chinese fare, as well as a few of the restaurant's own creations. The wonton soup is fresh and flavorful. Try the sesame chicken for something sweet, or the Mongolian beef for a tasty, traditional flavor. Lunch and dinner plates come with fried or steamed rice, an entree and an egg roll. Delivery to downtown hotels is available.

La Fonda

Traditonal Mexican cuisine
2415 N Main Ave
(1 block south of Woodlawn Dr)
San Antonio, TX 78212
United States
+1 210 733 0621
http://www.lafondaonmain.com
This near-Northside restaurant offers casual dining with an authentic Mexican taste. Close to San Antonio College, it is located at the junction of Main Street and Craig Place in a modest building with indoor and outdoor seating. The food is more complicated than that offered at a standard taco shop: one is more likely to find black beans than the ordinary refried pintos and the entrees often include grilled chicken or steaks with authentic sauces. A full bar is available.

Liberty Bar

Known for great food and an odd building
328 E Josephine St
San Antonio, TX 78215
United States
+1 210 227 1187
Liberty Bar's old, deceptively restored home seems to lean so precariously, one wonders how it still stands. Wrongfully playing second fiddle to the building, the menu and the wine list boast some unique and tasty selections. Do not pass up any of the chicken dishes, the chilled green bean salad, or the homemade breads and desserts. The bar portion of the restaurant draws an eclectic and lively crowd in the evenings. Be sure to pop in for brunch on Sundays.

Van's Chinese Seafood Restaurant

When you just can't decide
3214 Broadway
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 828 8449
In the mood for sushi? Go to Van's. Moo Goo Gai Pan? Try Van's. Spring rolls? Van's. This multi-faceted restaurant in old Alamo Heights deftly blends Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine in an unhurried atmosphere. Van's serves a steady business rush at lunch and draws a crowd as varied as its dinner menu. The mostly nondescript décor is made interesting by a wall of wine bottles offset by a fish tank-lined wall.
