Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables.

Barn Door Restaurant

Don't let the name fool you
8400 North New Braunfels Ave
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 824 0116
http://www.sawhost.com/barndoor
The hokey name and checkered plastic tablecloths belie the mouthwatering (and pricey) steaks, chicken and seafood at this San Antonio institution. The Barn Door runs its own butcher shop, and every aged cut is tender and juicy. This steakhouse is huge and its atmosphere is casual, with pictures of horses and cowboys telling the story of old Texas. It's equally suited to a business lunch, a first date or a family night out. If you find yourself waiting for a table on the weekend, wander into the bar and check out the horse racing memorabilia. At lunch, try a tenderloin sandwich or a chicken-fried rib eye steak. At dinner, the six-ounce Lady's Filet and the 14-ounce Gentlemen's Ribeye is most tempting. The restaurant also serves a great selection of seafood, chicken, chicken livers, pork chops and quail. If you're dining with a good friend, pour some extra-garlicky Green Goddess dressing on your salad.

The dramatic flaming torches positioned under an open-beam canopy outside the restaurant promises something different...and the food delivers on that promise.A Southwestern theme is emphasized with pine timbers, pleasing shades of turquoise and terracotta, and lots of Native American accessories. The restaurant is always busy during lunch and dinner, so be prepared to wait. Everything that comes out of the kitchen is garnished with spicy goodness. Try the sublime Tudie's Chicken-Fried Tuna ($12.95), the tender Tahoe Tenderloin ($18.95) or the provocative Desert Fire Pasta ($10.95).

Seafood, spirits and song
16084 San Pedro Ave
(between Brookhollow and Thousand Oaks)
San Antonio, TX 78232
United States
+1 210 496 3386
Crabby Jacks is a popular place with the happy-hour crowd, the dinner crowd and the late-night crowd, and it succeeds in catering to all three. With its weather-beaten wood and tank of live lobsters, this bar/restaurant looks like it belongs on a beach more than it does fronting a strip center. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, accented with red lights and lots of beer gear. Pull up a stool at one of the three large bars or grab a booth for drinks and dinner. The menu is laden with seafood items including steamed, fried and broiled selections of fish, crab, shrimp, lobster and oysters. If you don't like shellfish, you can choose from several beef, chicken and pasta entrées. Live singers are featured every night; a DJ takes care of the tunes on Sunday nights before the live performances get started.

Crumpets' casual elegance is rivaled only by its contemporary cuisine. Daily specials and beautiful surroundings make this little restaurant and bakery popular among ladies who lunch, couples who kiss and friends who fraternize. Dining al fresco is simply a treat. Let the shade of the live oak trees ease the burden of the sun as you listen to the soft rush of small waterfalls in the background, or sit by one of the huge picture windows and enjoy the scenery from the inside. The varied menu includes a delightful selection of soups, salads, seafood, pasta, beef and chicken. Choose a traditional entrée such as the rosemary chicken, or try something not as traditional, like the ostrich filet. The five-course Sunday brunch is a must-do.

San Antonio, TX 78218

The Mongolian-style barbecue here is probably quite a bit fancier than what the original Genghis Khan ate during his travels. However, it is still a simple, tasty way to prepare spicy and delicious meats. Choose a combination of lamb, beef, pork or chicken along with assorted julienned vegetables and watch as the chefs stir-fry them quickly on the fiery grill. All-you-can-eat meals include soup, spring roll, tea, dessert and a glass of house wine for one fixed price. The strip-mall location won't delight you with grand decorations, but the food should please both your palate and your pocket.

Exotic spices infuse the plentiful and wonderfully aromatic dishes at one of San Antonio's few Indian restaurants.

If you're not sure you like Indian cuisine, venture in for lunch. For the uninitiated, the lunch buffet is a bargain at $6.95. You can sample such traditional dishes as beef curry, chicken with spinach, and tandoori chicken. Tandoori dishes are prepared in the restaurant's authentic tandoor, a high-temperature, wood-burning clay oven that cooks everything from chicken to shrimp.

When you're ready to expand your horizons and try some more sophisticated Indian cuisine, ask your server for a primer. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help you decide among the many authentic lamb, chicken, seafood and vegetable dishes.

But Los Barrios doesn't rely on formality—the menu promotes eating tacos, tostados, tortillas, and flautas with your fingers. The restaurant's large seating capacity is made homier with traditional colors and wall art, large windows and lots of lush green plants. One of the most acclaimed Italian restaurants in San Antonio, Paesano's has been a local favorite for decades. Tourists are most familiar with its location on the River Walk, but the one just north of downtown in Lincoln Heights, near the Quarry Marketplace, offers the same great menu in a different atmosphere. The west room has a spectacular sunset view overlooking the Quarry Golf Course; it's a view that you would not want to miss, especially with that special someone. You can choose from a variety of dinners including red snapper sautéed with artichokes, mushrooms and white wine; orange roughly with lemon butter and garlic; and shrimp with fra diavolo sauce. This is a funky little spot in the middle of the stereotypically conservative Alamo Heights neighborhood. It serves breakfast and dinner, but is most popular for lunch. The soup-and-sandwich-type lunch menu and daily specials have a decidedly healthy, and sometimes vegetarian, bent. Don't miss the iced herbal tea, the spinach salad or the turkey burger. The dinner specials are also worth a try, especially the grilled empanadas with ground beef and onions and the potato stir-fry, blended with seasoned spinach and fresh tomatoes. If you have a sweet tooth, a warm snickerdoodle cookie is the way to go. Twin Sisters draws a crowd early, so plan to wait for a table.

This casually upscale seafood restaurant got its start in Corpus Christi, but is right at home in trendy Alamo Heights.
