Cajun cookin' at its best |
1289 Southwest Loop 410 San Antonio, TX 78227 United States +1 210 674 0019 http://www.acadianacafe.com/? |
For authentic Cajun cookin', this is the place to go in San Antonio. Located on the far west side of the city, the huge restaurant plays host to hordes of locals craving authentic Cajun cuisine, seafood and catfish. As this is definitely a family restaurant, you can expect child- and parent-friendly touches such as lids and straws for milk glasses, a plentiful supply of saltines to munch on, and crayons as a diversion. Housed in what resembles a massive two-story cedar house, the restaurant boasts a large porch and a cavernous interior. The quick and friendly service more than compensates for a table setting that leaves something to be desired (vinyl cloths, heavy wooden chairs and tables balanced on sugar packets for stability). Cajun specialties such as red beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya abound, and all are wonderfully prepared. Should you crave seafood, any of the shrimp entrees can't be beat. For fish lovers, be sure to try the famous catfish. Side dishes include expected choices such as coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies and basic vegetables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A touch of Italy "at the vineyard." |
1203 N Loop 1604 West, #101 (Vinyard Center) San Antonio, TX 78201-4002 United States +1 210 340 0000 http://www.aldinos.com/ |
Affiliated with Aldo's Ristorante Italiano, Aldino has a warm and elegant setting recalling ancient Rome. The Roman architecture, with its columns and murals creates an old world atmosphere, the better to enjoy the fine Italian cuisine. Depending on the weather, you will likely want to dine on the outdoor patio. There's even a complete party room for receptions and other group activities. The full bar and fine wine selection makes for a well-rounded meal, for lunch or dinner. Try the Ravioli de Vitello, which consists of ravioli stuffed with ground veal, spinach and ricotta cheese and then topped with a pesto cream sauce; or the Chicken Gorgonzola, a sautéed chicken breast topped with mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and a tarragon cream sauce. Dine while eating in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Alsatian offers an excellent earth-and-sea platter consisting of filet mignon, fried catfish and breaded shrimp. Not in the mood for steak? Try the Popeye The Sailor's Plate, a platter of fried catfish, fried shrimp and fries. If you are looking for something from the grill, then you may want to try the Texas-size T-Bone or the Tex-Mex combo, a rib eye served with two enchiladas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mouth-watering barbeque and smoked turkey |
3619 North Panam Expressway San Antonio, TX 78219 United States +1 210 212 6400 |
Casey's has barbecue so good that even the President of the United States has eaten there. This restaurant serves up spicy, flavorful brisket and truly exceptional smoked turkey along with other local favorites such as smoked sausage and barbeque sandwiches. The side dishes are a cut above what is served at most places: the pinto beans are seasoned delicately, and the potato salad is by far one of the tastiest around, with crunchy bits of pickle, yet no mustard-heavy aftertaste. Breakfast tacos are served daily and lunch is served after 11am. Catering is available too. The décor is rustic and Western-themed, featuring genuine saddles, ropes and cowboy memorabilia. Wooden floors and plank tables lend to the Texas ambiance. Casey's delicious barbecue sauce is on every table, so you can kick up the flavor another notch if you please. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican cuisine made fun |
18008 US Hwy 281 N San Antonio, TX 78232 United States +1 210 545 0300 |
The Austin, Texas landmark finally made its way a little closer to the border. Chuy's boasts decor that could most politely be called kitschy: painted wooden fish hanging from the ceiling, an enormous jalapeno pinata and framed black-and-white photos of other Mexican restaurants in the city, to name a few of the oddities. The food is delicious and, thankfully, not mainstream. Enjoy chicken enchiladas made with blue corn tortillas, "big as yo' face" burritos and the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo (a platter of oversized servings of enchiladas, tacos and queso). A great steakhouse at a moderate price, this is the idea behind Cowcatchers Steaks. In a turn of the century setting, the kitchen offers only Certified Angus rib eye steaks, taken from an open mesquite fire directly to your table. Cowcatchers features three massive dining rooms, available for private parties. And for those of you tired of waiting outside in the cold (or heat) with a pager? Garrett's Watering Hole, attached to the main restaurant, is available for your party to wait in style, complete with a full bar and entertainment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant Restaurant with a View of the Hill Country |
16641 La Cantera Parkway Westin La Cantera Resort San Antonio, TX 78250 United States +1 210 558 6500 |
A resort as elegant as the Westin La Cantera would be expected to offer a restaurant as lovely. Mark Miller, Santa Fe's chef extraordinaire, designed the menu, which has received continual raves since the restaurant's opening. Try the Shrimp Corncakes or the Gazpacho before diving into to perfectly prepared steak and seafood entrees. The wine list is as impressive as the service. The only thing better is the panoramic view of the Hill Country, a true crowning touch. Francesca's is popular with locals as well as resort guests, so reservations are highly recommended. Among the other delights on the Henry's menu are the enchilada dinners, which come in cheese, picadillo or shredded chicken flavors. Flavorful Greek fare |
7159 West US Highway 90 (at the Military Drive exit) San Antonio, TX 78227 United States +1 210 674 3464 |
Greek food aficionados claim that this establishment has some of the most authentic cuisine in San Antonio. Those of us who are not from Greece can't attest to the authenticity, but the taste and quality of the offerings are exceptional. Spicy gyros, delicious dolmas and grilled lemon-herb chicken are sure to satisfy any hunger for Greek food. The pastitsio is creamy and comforting, and all the offerings are spiced just right. The staff is friendly and willing to help novices choose just the right dish. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Romance is always in the air at Oasis, the spectacular restaurant and bar at Medina Lake. Even with a huge seating capacity of 350, including the indoor and the outdoor deck, you hardly find an empty table at peak hours over here. The menu has a spread of sophisticated sandwiches, burgers and desserts, like the Fried Shrimp Poor Boy, which is actually rich sumptuous breaded shrimp atop a hoagie roll. But if you want to go for a full-fledged meal you will not be disappointed. Eating though is by-the-side, the most important thing you do at Oasis is relax, admire the sunset and watch the night lights dance on the lake. Review © 2007, Wcities |
